I will also throw in my 2 cents. One of the major reasons we elected to buy an Amel, was that the boat concept, its design and systems had been tested for decades, in conditions that we expected to encounter.

It is my belief that any design can be improved on. However without sufficient of real world testing, the success of the improvement is only theoretical. Design changes sometimes have unintended consequences that only show up after time. In my opinion,
if there is a proven design, on a critical system that has performed for decades if done correctly, should not be changed without sufficient real world testing.

Hello Bill,
I am new to my AMEL 54. I have seen a couple of videos on changing the seals out, but do you have the how to you like, and is it available. I'm splashing in one month.
I remember all the Nikimat how to info posted publicly. and the many other people who have posted on their own sites and on YouTube.
A library of sorts would be nice.
It was sad to see Nikimat after Irma.

Many of you know my thoughts on this and I will not bore you with why I believe the Amel way is the best way.
I don't want to start an argument and I respect each owner's opinion....but, I cannot let this continue without saying something. There are plenty of newbies in this group who may not understand the correct procedure and the risks.
Ask yourself this question:
Which is more important? Keeping oil in the C-Drive, or keeping water out? And if you had a chance to cut the chance of one of these risks occurring in half, which would you choose?
Oil in? Or, water out?
The biggest reason, in fact the only reason, that I have witnessed for either oil leaking out or water leaking in, is the person doing the job actually did not do it correctly. There were important steps, either omitted or done wrong. There are correct seals
and incorrect seals. There are Amel OEM wear bushings and knock-offs.
My recommendation is to: Do the job as though Henri Amel is looking over your shoulder. I believe he is.

Re: tb/BRISBANE area marina & yard/AYOG
Hi Scott Good to hear from you. I hope all is well and that you guys will have another safe sail down to the Caribbean soon. The Pacific and the Indian Oceans were certainly the highlights of our circumnavigation, with the Pacific being the most beautiful with nice variety, and the certainly totally safe which was a pleasant change for us after some of our experiences. You and Mia will absolutely love it! Unfortunately, although I have sailed there a few years ago in 2016, I am no expert in terms of New Zealand so I should not try to advise you, however both Danny and Alan on this forum would have excellent advice I am sure are their boats have been there for many years. Please look us up when you come to Australia. It was a pleasure to meet you both at the Amel Rally this year and I would gladly help if there is anything you need advice on here in Australia. I'd be interested to hear how many hours you all have on your seals, too.
We did the two aft seals with the spring facing sea water and the forward two seals with spring facing the oil. So far 600 hours and zero drop in oil and zero water ingress. But I see the logic behind Jose's method with any oil leaking past the single forward seal lubricating the aft two seals. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Congrats Colin! You guys did make it a good ways since we met at the Amel rally in Martinique! We're just in DC. :)
That said, we'll be heading your way and likely arrive in your part of the world by November 2020. Most likely spend typhoon season in NZ and then back to the South Pacific for a second season in 2021 as we have heard nothing but positive things about it. Any idea about reasonably priced dry dock in NZ? We will likely get off the boat for a bit and buy a car to travel around. Mie and I have both spent time in Australia, so we're hoping to explore NZ this time, but you never know, we may make it over to your island, too! -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: tb/BRISBANE area marina & yard/AYOG
Hi Teun Regarding your question about the new sails for Island Pearl II from Emrah at Q Sails, I should also first thank you now for your positive recommendations in terms of your Pacific shipping experience with QSails, and the quality. Based on your advice, that of Bill, and so many other Amel Q Sail clients we went ahead and ordered a completely new set of sails to be sent to us in Fiji. I did not want to comment too early before we had actually got to try the sails out on a passage. Firstly, similar to your experience Emrah delivered the sails all the way to Nadi in Fiji on the precise day promised, and at the exact agreed on cost too. That was impressive! Next, the sails fitted our boat #332 absolutely perfectly, right out of the box! I have purchased new sets of sails for previous boats from both Hood and North Sails, and so in comparison could immediately see the quality of these Q Sails was really good. We eventually only got the last of the three new sails all up 10 days ago, the day before sailing 800nm from New Caledonia to Bundaberg in Australia since our previous sails were still usable, and I wanted these sails to be "as new" for the future new owner of Island Pearl II when we sell soon. On the test sail from New Caledonia to Bundaberg in Australia, we had very light winds and I certainly was very pleased with the shape of the new sails in all winds, and the added speed which we got in low winds. Initially, I did not have the mainsail halyard tight enough, but as soon as I corrected that issue, the sails furled even better than the old ones ever did, both upwind and downwind. Over the last 36hrs of the passage we had constant winds of 23 - 27kts and I was really delighted with the performance and shape when reefed back at all different reefing points. So in a nutshell, yes thank you for your recommendation. I too now am also another very happy Amel owner after purchasing from Q Sails. Best regards Colin SV Island Pearl II Bundaberg Port Marina (Now for sale in Australia, with all Australian Import Duty and taxes paid, so the new owner would be allowed to keep it here during the Pacific Cyclone seasons. 24v alternator
Thanks Alan, James and Bill for your comments.
I can not see that there is any difference between Alan’s set up and mine. So it must be fine tuned. I have seen other 54’s with the 24v alternator driven by the same belt as the water pump and 12v alternator. That set up works well on all account but it is only 110A v 175A. I am not going to go that way. I think I will persist with the twin belt set up for a bit longer and do; 1. New bearings on idlers and new face 2. Polish and check faces of pulleys 3. Gates fleet runner matched belts 4. Fine tune the alignment. Then if I am still not 100% happy I will change the pulleys to micro v serpentine. Nick Anchored off Nisos Elefonisos AML54-019

Re: Remote two way valve for flushing the water maker
Yes Paul, that's how it works.
And when we start the watermaker we run it for a few minutes to allow the incoming saltwater to fully flush out the fresh before increasing the pressure slowly to start making water. Fresh water applied under pressure to the membranes will damage them. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Re: Remote two way valve for flushing the water maker
David Wallace
Paul, yes that’s how it works. With no power on the solenoids the open one let’s salt water in and the closed one keeps freshwater out. Throwing the switch provides power to both solenoids simultaneously which closes the saltwater solenoid and opens the fresh
water one. When done flushing I then turn off the RO master switch and power is simultaneously removed from both solenoids (since power to them is routed from the “downstream” side of the master power switch) so they return to their normal state: if I just
turned off the solenoid switch saltwater would be introduced again until the RO system was shut off. Then be sure to turn off the solenoid switch or else you'll be making water with your own freshwater when you next start up your system! I've just built a
relay switch to solve that problem but haven’t installed it yet.

Dave and Alan thanks, great idea with the timer, as I often forget to flush my membranes. Nick, Apparently Amel wasn't happy with the install of the 175 amp alternator on the first 54s either. They later changed the alternator to a 110 amp Mastervolt. Re: 24v alternator pulley
Hello Nick,
We have the Leece Neville alternator with a smart reg on Elyse ...twin belt pulley...and no dust...and the belts are fine after years. Previous experience with this leads me to believe that the pulley is the problem. You don't need much of an imperfection in the pulley groove to lead to belt destruction. The belt should be sitting in the pulley groove, not bottoming out and the faces of the pulley groove must be absolutely devoid of any corrosion or dirt, anything. Ours has worked perfectly for the last 6 years ....and the big advantage of this setup is that the 2 belts on the LN 175A alternator are the same size as the belt on the small alt that charges the start battery. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437
