Thanks again for the silicone seals. Would you please confirm that the seals are intended to replace the 'hard' lip seal below the upper foam seal in the orientation as per attached photo's? Many thanks David Ker Marie SM#101

Hello again Gerhard!
That does look factory and compliments the design. I have no doubt I won't be able to restore the original, however it is a wide low design which will mean some modifications. Something that at some point I'll give thought to. Unfortunately my layout looks somewhat more cramped than yours. Regards

Engine Water leackage
Santorin LO
Hi Group,
Recently after few hours of motorring especialy on higher rpm i found red water under the gearbox. However, i could not licate the source of the leakage. After about 100hrs of the same (was not too bad and no aignificant shortage of oil or water both gearbox and engine), when it got worst, i finally found the source - not from the gearbox, but actually from the 'stern' side of the engine just around the timing belt area. Would anyone be able to know what xould be the problem and why the collor is red?

Re: Desalinator high pressure hose and fittings
Mohammad Shirloo
Hi James;
We purchased our replacement directly from Dessalator. We purchased 10 meters of hose (For two replacements) and 4 extra fittings. A fairly straight forward job, but Dessalator is not the most cost effective way to go, as stated by others. What I like about their setup is, if caught out in a location without access to a hydraulic shop (or on passage), you can easily change out yourself. Typically, you can just cut a bit of the hose and reinstall the fitting without the need to pull and route the new hose.
Happy Sailing;

Hi Mark, We had guests who had trouble w slipperiness of bumper. I put a 2" non-slip/reflector tape on it. It was helpful, but the non-skid granules abraded the paint off our new bumper. I will try PlastiDip when back on the boat in May. Drew Revelation SM390 Carloforte, Sardinia

James, Just bring a hose and connector with you to a hydraulic shop. Most shops stock the hose and if you are lucky, they will put the fittings on for you. Fair Winds Eric

Eric, or anyone else - Do you know what the ID is for the hydraulic hose in order to use the field serviceable / re-usable fittings? There are quite a few different specs for hydraulic hose, but I assume it is the single steel wire reinforcement (SAE 100R1) spec.

James, I am glad to see you are enjoying life. We will be around St Maarten at the start of the season. If you happen to want to bang your way back that way. A few years we sailed from Santa Marta to Guadeloupe. What a miserable passage 25-35 on the nose for 8 days. Fair Winds Eric

A POSSIBLE DISASTER Desalinator high pressure hose and fittings

As an afterthought, check the rubber hose that attaches the stove to the propane supply line. The hose was rubbing on the stove and I was lucky to catch it before I had a problem. I have replace it with steel braided hydraulic hose and rerouted the hose to prevent disaster. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

James, I had my hoses duplicated at a hydraulic shop in St. Maarten. They used aeroquip hose and swage on fittings. They are much less money than the do it yourself ones that come with the watermaker. Just make sure that the steel braid in the hose is stainless.. The hoses are usually rated at 5000 psi. Hydraulic shops make hoses for bulldozers, etc. You can find them everywhere. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Doesn't that make it stiff and nullify the impact absorbing properties? Seems to me if you backed into a dock you might split the fibre glass

The fittings are meant to be reused. I just find them to be a pain, you also need a cap or an elbow, jic to do it. Attached are instructions. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Perhaps there is no need to have new fittings, since it is the hose that needs to be replaced at 5 year intervals, more or less. Is it quite simple to re-use the old fittings on new hydraulic hose?
Thanks, James

Desalinator high pressure hose and fittings
James Cromie
Good evening everyone.
I have a Dessalator 160L/hr, and I'd like to order a spare set of high pressure hoses with fittings. Online, I am finding these to be quite expensive with stainless steel JIC fittings. Can anyone direct me to a good vendor for these (with fittings? ) You can contact me directly at jamescromie 'at' yahoo 'dot' com in order to avoid posting any commercial information (not sure if that is against the forum rules)... Many Thanks James Cromie SV Soteria SM2K 347 Aruba

Re: Fuel tank
Painting stainless isn’t a good idea. Stainless requires contact wit air to be “stain.less”. It’s also difficult to get paint to stick to stainless.

Thanks to all that responded to my fuel tank problem. It came out with no problems other then cutting the fuel inlet pipe off to clear the hatch way. It has rust spots, leaks, where the baffles were spot welded. I am about to order a new tank but they only have 304? Not 316SS here in Columbia.I plan to epoxy paint the outside. When we were at Chantiers Amel - Caraïbes in Martinique we removed the outhaul motor which came out easily with a puller tool they supplied They did not have the replacement rubber inserts but instead supplied us with short lengths of rubber tubing and nylon washers. The tubing spread to fill the hole (ours looked like they were still round. The right size tubing compressed vertically and expanding horizontally might do a good job in this situation. Photos-- (included a pic of the puller, the cleaned up shaft with the bronze collar as well as the inserts-- https://photos.app.goo.gl/RLit2YvNU5BxQDjt6
