Amel Euros 41 1976 - Steering Wheel Removal Confusion
Andrew Eaves <andyeaves@...>
Hello all,
This is my first post on what will be a long term project boat. It's working and sailing but it needs some love and attention after the previous owner just found it too much for him at his stage in life. Thus my first question I hope you can help me with please. The steering is moving in/out and I am trying to disassemble to see what's going on. The sprocket looks to have a possible aftermarket bolt drilled (removed from the pic) to hold it onto the shaft, but it's not budging anyway. However I can't see how to release on the other side (steering wheel). There is a bolt/screw underneath the steering but that too is rock solid. Should it turn/pull if so what for? Many thanks in advance for any help received. Andrew

Paul,
Thanks . The old base that you show is the one that I have and for which I can't find a replacement. I like your solution to get access underneath.

I have the same issue, one of the heads bases I manage to salvage by adding very large washers of aluminium, but the other one is probably to much work to fox, so I thinking of Buying a new Jabsco. I put in an inspection hatch to get access under. see photo Paul on SY Kerpa AM#259

Kent and Iris,
Thank you. I will look at that bolt.
Interestingly ( annoyingly--as a replacement for your base seems available) I appear to have a slightly different base from that which you show, although our boats are not far apart ( 243 and 302)

I did a “temporary” fix with a piece of 1/2” Starboard shaped to span the holes where the break is. To complicate matters further, one of the bolts was seized to the mild steel backing plate and I broke the head
off trying to get it out. The backing plate is quite a bit below the surface, and drilling it out left a hole that was impossible to rethread. I used a Mr Toggle bolt which leaves a reusable female thread below the old backing plate. It has held up beautifully
for ~4 years...we’ll, maybe not aesthetically, but pretty is as pretty does.

Well I have not yet bought the new head just decided, that is probably the best option. The reason for the inspection hatch was to get access to the bolt heads below the surface as one of the holes was "enlarged" and had no thread. But to no good for this time as the hole to fasten the head was down into a hollow beam so no access, but next time it will be easy to attache the new head with the hatch in place. Paul

Re: Outhaul on Supermaramu
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Gary,
Thanks. I did replace the rubber washers but should have done so earlier as the distortion of the holes had already started and , needless to say, once it started it only got worse.

As to the elongating of the holes in the boom mounting plate. This occurs due to the torque that is applied to those mounting holes each time the out-haul is used. Originally Amel fitted rubber grommets around the mounting bolts to prevent contact between the mounting bolts and the aluminum (for corrosion protection, shock mounting, and to prevent mounting plate wear). Those soon deteriorate but are readily available for replacement. If you notice your out-haul assembly moving back and forth with activation of the outhaul (in either direction) it is probably time to replace the rubber grommets. I don't recall the size off hand, but the specifications take into account the thickness of the "groove" to match the mounting plate, the ID for the bolt and the "groove" diameter for the mounting plate. Re: Onan MDKD 6.5kW genset exhaust elbow
Miles
I have an MDKAL on my SM 216, that I would like to get a replacement elbow for. It seems the different models might have been used interchangeably for a while. Is this correct? In any case, I would be happy to go in with anyone having a replacement made for a MDKAL. Regards, Miles SM216 Ladybug, now in Newport, soon in Martinique

Re: Freshwater pump
James Cromie
Eric - I have the Sureflo Aqua King II on my boat - It was actually installed by the previous owner. So, for around 5 - 6 yrs, I have not had any problems with respect to leaks at fittings, etc. (I leave the water pump on all the time while I’m on the boat. It is a good pump, I’m happy with its performance, and I keep a spare. You can adjust the demand sensitivity on it, though I’ve never changed it from the factory setting.

Places to winter in Scotland

I'm planning to cruise the West Coast of Scotland next season and am wondering whether there are good places to leave the boat for the following winter. Any help would be much appreciated.

The MDKAL pretty much happened on the Millenium edition as an evolution of the previous ONAN MDKD version. I think the last 35 SM 53 had the MDKAV but Olivier would probably know for sure. It might have been the last 50. Forgot to write it down… Joel

Karen,
That sure is much different than the elbow on my Onan MDKAV 7kW. Mine looks much more like the one from Nikimat's MDKAL. If you do end up replacing yours with a new one, let me know. I will happily take the old one off your hands to make a jig and will give you a brand new one in return as a spare/replacement. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Re: Freshwater pump
Parmax 4 24v 40psi has performed perfectly for us for 5+ years now. I think the previous owner had a 25psi model in there when we took over the boat and it was OK, but the 40psi has plenty of reserve for two showers concurrently.

Re: Headsail furler issues
That's interesting, Adam.
On the SN the wires make "home runs" to the motors (furler or windlass) with no splice in a junction box, a far better arrangement (and typically "code"). When you redo this can you run a single wire from the solenoid to the motor, just using the junction box as an intermediate place to pull the single wires through, without putting in splices? I think that would give a far better installation. Craig

Dear Ross, I’m in Seychelles at the moment and don’t have the dimensions on my system here. Bill Rouse uploaded the a file with dimensions and pictures. If you contact him directly he will be able to assist. We found that his solution with the thicker copper bar was robust and worked well. Metelec delivered the bar bent and drilled as specified. We drilled the holes for connection wires once the copper bar was installed. Regards Mike & Peta Solitude SM2K 461 Get Outlook for iOS
