Re: New Genoa sail for Amel 54 and SM
Thank you all for advice on foam luff, but I have still not heard any comments from the one who have incidence genoa and it must be many out there who have them, does it have foam luff or not? if not how does it perform? I would be very grateful for your feed back, I added SM in the head line to maybe attract a few more members to respond

Re: Companion way for removal
Hi Kent,
We put in Plexiglas years ago. It's absolutely fantastic for brightening the cabin (you may recall seeing it). For privacy in a marina at night we have a simple finished piece of upholstery material that hangs by loops on the hatch knobs. Removed the seal and the small gap (~1/16") left is never an issue - what little water enters when washing the cockpit or driving rain simply drains out as designed. (Haven't played submarine in a hurricane like Eric, though, but I'm confident it would not be an issue.) Removed the dodger to install it. Cheers, Craig

you mention the use of wax to block the UV on the Formica. I am curious what wax did you use and also if it can be used to prevent the gelcoat from bleaching? All the best Dieter Fal-lera Sharki #135

Re: New Genoa sail for Amel 54
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi Alan, I cant agree that a rope insert is a viable option. I have had it foisted on me by sailmakers in the past. It does not do the job. A properly made foam insert is tapered at the ends and full in the middle. This takes up the fullness in the center of the sail and maintains good sail shape. It is important that the thickness of the foam is comensurate with the cut of the sail. Tachometer not playing ball - TMD22
David Cummane
The needle on the tacho for my Volvo Penta TMD22 goes to the far side of the dial on turning the key but does not return to zero/rev count.
Periodically the needle shows a rev count after the engine has been running for some time. Behind the panel there are two black wires connected to a female pin which looks like it should be attached to a male pin, however there are no obvious male pins available. Picture below. Has anyone had a similar problem or can anyone shed some light? Many thanks David Cummane Ker Marie, SM#101

Re: Twisted chain - Amel 54
Dear David
Last year I replaced my old galvanized chain with a new (galvanized) one. the new chain got often twisted and stuck when I released it. I searched a long time for the reason. After a while I released out all the chain in the marina and the last 20 m was completely twisted. I untwisted it and took it back in and saw in the chain locker that it is coming in correct. I think I found the reason why it happen. As I release the chain it goes out without a pressure (no weight) and the chain twists around the swivel and even stuck sometimes. When I take the chain back in, it comes correct because it is always under the pressure of the chain weight. Every time I anchored, it was twisted a bit more (out twisted, in not twisted). After using the the for a while it got better and it happen more selten. Maybe it happen when the chain is new and after using it for a while, the chain get the right form. You can see in the two small movies what I mean. Best regards Lior A54 #18

He First you should see that the anchors supplied on your SM NR 151are about 25 driving old. At the time there was no choice of anchors . We had also driven the stainless steel CQR until yesterday, but because it was bent against a spade. Always consider how many years of the components delivered by Amel have worked. Re: New Genoa sail for Amel 54
If you intend to sail with the genoa partly furled you definitely need a foam or rope luff insert.
Even with these the sail shape is not great when furled but it's definitely better than not having it. The sail shape doesn't look too bad from the cockpit, but have a look at a yacht sailing behind you with a furled genoa and you'll see how baggy it is, whoich wehne the breeze gets up, is exactly what you don't want! Of course from the 55 production the door is plexiglass with a stainless frame of top and front sliders and allows lots of light

Has anyone thought about replacing the door with a piece of Lexan or plexiglass? Maybe a teak frame with clear plastic insert?
It would require some thought to make it seal well when closed and NOT scratch the plastic when sliding up and down. Sure would be nice to have more light. Re: SM2K: Replacing a CLIMMA 9EH AC unit in the Salon
#replacement
We lived aboard our previous boat in Florida. Air conditioning was a requirement, running pretty much non-stop through the summer. In 18 years, we went through 3 brands. Marine air was the first. It lasted 7 years, with several control board failures, two capacitive start failures, and the final straw, a compressor failure. I tried to economize on the second one. It lasted 4 years, first with a fan motor failure, a reversing valve failure, with a factory defect in a cable shorting the unit and causing catastrophic failure.

I then went for the best unit I could find. I bought a Mermaid Air, because of good reviews from a friend, and a 5 year warranty. It’s been doing fine for 5 years, so far. I sold the boat with it still working. ~~~⛵️~~~Matt

SM2K: Replacing a CLIMMA 9EH AC unit in the Salon
#replacement
Michael Mueller
Greetings!
Our CLIMMA 9EH AC unit in the Salon of SM2K #417 has failed. The compressor has a ground fault and trips the GFI. Has anyone successfully replaced the unit or rebuilt the compressor? We are currently not on the boat. Does the Webasto Blue Cool S S10-R-230VREV (10k BTU) or even the S13-R-230V (13k BTU) unit fit in the available space under the salon bench? At the Annapolis sailboat show a vendor with a good reputation in the Marine AC business recommended the "Marine Air" built in China as a viable replacement. Does anyone have experiences with either one? Thank you in advance & with kind regards Michael & Robyn SY RIPPLE SM2K#417 currently in Brunswick, GA

Hi all, Many years ago I read the misadventure of a cruiser who tried to untwist his chain by letting it and the anchor dangle out in deep water, only to find out his windlass couldn’t retrieve the full weight. Oops. I don’t think it could happen to us, but is it damaging to the windlass? Are there any other good tips to untwist the chain? Best, Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Fakarava, French Polynesia

Thank you Ian for the alternative product Thank you Bill for the very insightful questions. Even if there was some previous threads about this subject in the forum, we all need to clarify the most secure way to replace the veneer using a wood product and placing it also under the external guides because, in some rough conditions, if the job isn't made in using a single sheet properly glued, it can drive to a blocked companionway after sometime in bad weather which is highly undesirable… Ian, may be have you some images and a more detailed process and we can start here to make a detailed how-to. If we succeed, I'll update my external veener and post here also the details and images. Kind regards FF
