Re: New Genoa sail for Amel 54
If you intend to sail with the genoa partly furled you definitely need a foam or rope luff insert.
Even with these the sail shape is not great when furled but it's definitely better than not having it. The sail shape doesn't look too bad from the cockpit, but have a look at a yacht sailing behind you with a furled genoa and you'll see how baggy it is, whoich wehne the breeze gets up, is exactly what you don't want! Has anyone thought about replacing the door with a piece of Lexan or plexiglass? Maybe a teak frame with clear plastic insert?
It would require some thought to make it seal well when closed and NOT scratch the plastic when sliding up and down. Sure would be nice to have more light. Re: SM2K: Replacing a CLIMMA 9EH AC unit in the Salon

We lived aboard our previous boat in Florida. Air conditioning was a requirement, running pretty much non-stop through the summer. In 18 years, we went through 3 brands. Marine air was the first. It lasted 7 years, with several control board failures, two capacitive start failures, and the final straw, a compressor failure. I tried to economize on the second one. It lasted 4 years, first with a fan motor failure, a reversing valve failure, with a factory defect in a cable shorting the unit and causing catastrophic failure.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I then went for the best unit I could find. I bought a Mermaid Air, because of good reviews from a friend, and a 5 year warranty. It’s been doing fine for 5 years, so far. I sold the boat with it still working. ~~~⛵️~~~Matt

SM2K: Replacing a CLIMMA 9EH AC unit in the Salon
#replacement
Michael Mueller
Greetings!
Our CLIMMA 9EH AC unit in the Salon of SM2K #417 has failed. The compressor has a ground fault and trips the GFI. Has anyone successfully replaced the unit or rebuilt the compressor? We are currently not on the boat. Does the Webasto Blue Cool S S10-R-230VREV (10k BTU) or even the S13-R-230V (13k BTU) unit fit in the available space under the salon bench? At the Annapolis sailboat show a vendor with a good reputation in the Marine AC business recommended the "Marine Air" built in China as a viable replacement. Does anyone have experiences with either one? Thank you in advance & with kind regards Michael & Robyn SY RIPPLE SM2K#417 currently in Brunswick, GA

Hi all, Many years ago I read the misadventure of a cruiser who tried to untwist his chain by letting it and the anchor dangle out in deep water, only to find out his windlass couldn’t retrieve the full weight. Oops. I don’t think it could happen to us, but is it damaging to the windlass? Are there any other good tips to untwist the chain? Best, Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Fakarava, French Polynesia

Thank you Ian for the alternative product Thank you Bill for the very insightful questions. Even if there was some previous threads about this subject in the forum, we all need to clarify the most secure way to replace the veneer using a wood product and placing it also under the external guides because, in some rough conditions, if the job isn't made in using a single sheet properly glued, it can drive to a blocked companionway after sometime in bad weather which is highly undesirable… Ian, may be have you some images and a more detailed process and we can start here to make a detailed how-to. If we succeed, I'll update my external veener and post here also the details and images. Kind regards FF

Re: Permanent 24 v to 12 v converter
Thomas Peacock
As part of putting in new instruments, I was able to shut down the “permanent” Sailor. Unfortunately, we do not have an on/off switch anywhere on our Sailors.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
When I installed a new Raymarine Autohelm, the main box has a 12 volt output for networking instruments that includes a power supply. Therefore, the various gauges and chart plotter all get power from that. One could consider having a backup power source for instruments, in case the autohelm were to go bad. The instruments are all activated by the Autohelm breaker. The new Quantum radar also is wired into that breaker, 24 volts. Thus, one Sailor is now freed up. Since the VHF is the most important of my present 12 volt devices, it has its own dedicated Sailor. The second Sailor runs the FM/CD radio, as well as the 12 volt circuits for cigar lighters. Since cigar lighter plugs and receptacles are finicky, we don’t use them anymore. Instead, I installed a 24 v to 5 v USB hub for phone and other small device charging. However, be aware that very new laptops may use the new USB 3/USB-C type connectors to charge the computer battery. It is important to be aware of the total demand on your USB hub. The third Sailor is inactivated by having pulled the fuse. However, I sleep well at night knowing that in case either of the other two Sailors were to go down, there is at least a spare. I don’t really care about the radio storing stations. But, if important, one could run the dedicated wire from the radio to the 12 v starter battery, with an in-line fuse. That is what is done on automobiles. The power draw is negligible. Plus you could always just pull the fuse if leaving unattended for more than a few weeks. Make sure that Incidences cuts your mainsail to the proper size. The previous owner commissioned from Incidences and the "P" dimension (luff) was 45 cm too short. As a result the "E" (foot) was also incorrect. Ian & Margaret S/V Loca Lola II SM153 US East Coast

The horizontal orientation was primarily personal preference from the customary way companionway hatches have traditionally been fabricated; when they had to be removed and stowed. Also, if someone was intent on breaking in the strength of the assembly is far stronger in the horizontal configuration. Discounting the inability to remove the hatch the Amel method of sliding the hatch down and leaving it in place is nice.
