Thanks for your advise. Next time my Onan will shut down i will try to short circuit the exhaust sensor or the coolant sensor to identify the origin of the pb. Best regards Juan de Zulueta Ophelie X SM 32 Envoyé de mon iPhone

Re: Onan group on SM number 32
Hi Juan, Thank you for answering my post about transmission . I had a similar issue with my ONAN shutting down and found that the sensor on the exhaust elbow was faulty. I had a spare and was back underway in a short time. Some Onans have a normally closed temp switch that opens when the temp is too high. If you have that kind, and don't have a spare, short the two sensor wires and it should start. If you have the normally open switch that closed when the temp gets too high, you can disconnect the sensor and it should start. In either case, regularly check the temps at your oil filter and exhaust whenever running it until you can get a replacement. Hope that's the problem on your Onan, easy fix. Hi James, Ahhh, no the boat is in the UK & we're currently in Portugal. Can I ask if it was timely, costly, and/or involved ripping the boat apart? We're heading back to the UK & will be living on board, so wondering how much of a headache it would be. Thanks, Sarah Sea Love, Hull 161

Re: Heater
Karen Smith
Paul,
Our boat came to us equipped with reverse cycle air conditioning units. They work well keeping the boat comfortable down to about 0C. Something to be aware of with this kind of unit, it that it does not work when the water temperatures drop below about 5C. They are quite energy efficient, actually using a bit less power than they do when cooling. They each deliver about 2,000 Watts of heat while using a bit less than 900 Watts of electricity. Amel also equipped our boat with resistance heaters, one in each cabin. They draw a lot of power, if they were all running about 20 Amps, more than the shore power connection could support. Re: Installing a holding tank Amel Maramu
Dennis Johns
Hello Sarah & Trevor, I have a 35 gallon holding tank installed in the port/aft cockpit lazarette
(pretty sure you'll need to get it custom made). Here are a couple of hints: 1) I have runs from the forward and aft heads done in PVC. Using a few 22 degree fittings, it is not too difficult to make the runs and you will never need to replace the very expensive "sanitary" hose when the stink becomes too much. While you are at it, I suggest you run PVC in the anti-siphon loop as well. These two actions will keep your heads and saloon from becoming an embarrassment. 2) If you can heel the boat over in a slip (mast halyard to a cleat), the thru hull can be installed just above the water line. 3) Be sure to install the macerator at the level of the drain. Don't make the macerator draw the waste up from the bottom of the tank as it will quit on you before its time and replacing it is not fun if you aren't near a clean out station (ask me how I know this). 4) Don't be cheap on the deck clean out cap. The plastic cap will be exposed to UV rays for long periods of time and eventually will degrade to the point where you have to break it to do a clean out. Good Luck Dennis Johns Libertad Maramu #121

Hi everyone,
We're in the process of buying a 1985 Amel Maramu & were surprised to find there is no holding tank on it.
Has anyone installed one in a Maramu? Did you do it yourselves or get a professional? We're looking at costs, in the water or (I'm presuming it needs to be done whilst out of the water for a through hull)?
Any information or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I have changed my engine for a yanmar 4jh4hte 6 years ago. Since my Super Maramu was built in 1990, It had the old transmission installed on it. Amel recommandation was to change the transmission to the new one more robust. My engine has now 1800 hours, since we have a mechanical transmission we don t need the brake. Amel told me at that time that if I had the new transmission installed there was no need to change it. Since your super Maramu is number 243 I believe you should have the new version installed on your boat. Juan de Zulueta Super Maramu 32 Ophélie X Envoyé de mon iPhone

Please be sure to post your findings. Our evacuation pump causes the breaker to pop. Otherwise, the dishwasher still works. I would like to get this operational again since we used it often while on anchor.

Re: Prop is spinning freely
Bill K, Thank you for this clear explanation of the Hurth/ZF transmissions. I haven't read this anywhere before and have never understood why my helm has a sign that says in French, not to put in reverse while sailing. When I switched from AutoProp to be MaxProp, I read that I should put in reverse until it stopped turning, then back to neutral. I have just finished a maintenance of the Autoprop and reinstalled it to see how it performs compared to the MaxProp. I now know that if it turns while sailing, it is safe to put the transmission in forward, but not reverse. Now for the next question... When I repowered from Volvo TMD22 (78HP} to Yanmar 4JH4HTE, (110HP), I was assured by the Yanmar dealer and mechanic (Danny Ramos in Fajardo; top Volvo mechanic in the Caribbean at the time) that the existing transmission was ok to reuse. It has had no problems after ~1200 hours using the MaxProp. But now I am worried that it may not be quite up to the job. Does anyone have thoughts or recommendations about that? Should I just replace it with a new, more robust one? If I use the Z25F, that means adding a shaft brake, right? Are there other robust mechanical transmissions that wouldn't require the brake? Any downsides to that? Or have the transmission inspected, and put it back in if everything looks OK? Or, with 1200hours already on the transmission with the new engine, just assume it is Ok and leave it alone? Thanks again Bill K, your post is a game-changer for me! Happy New Year, everyone! please share your opinion and if available views from a professional stand point, eg. metallurgy, material fatigue, etc about standing rigging when experienced in this field. I have indeed an infrared medical thermometer. I will use it to check. I was as well wondering if my problem could come from the thermostat? Re: Prop is spinning freely
Beaute Olivier
Hello Bill, all you wrote is correct. There has been some SM2000 with VOLVO engine and ZF25 hydraulic gear-box, with the same shaft-brake system as on the YANMAR engine. Some of these SM2000 are fitted with a prop shaft alternator which requires a solenoid valve system in order to keep the prop spinning while the engine is OFF. When in use, the solenoid valve keeps the pressure in the shaft-brake cylinder. Happy New Year. Olivier.
