Re: Replacement jib cars for Maramu
One solution is to take them to a machine shop and have them duplicated. This is what I would do. Bill

Replacement jib cars for Maramu
Karl & Deborah Windahl
Good morning, As proud new caretakers of our Maramu we're in the process of learning all about her and of course replacing some parts that have served their time. In this process we have found that the bearings for the horizontal roller in the jib cars have reached that point and Harken gave me the news that they aren't available anymore. I've reached out to other manufacturers and await their reply and I don't want to go to the Harken recommended pin stop system as we love the current set up. Wondering if there is a known direct replacement? I only seem to be finding control sheaves on one side of the car rather than fore and aft. Short of that I'll be dismantling them, bearing retention appears to be caps with a circlip, and will source replacement bearings. Or is there a company that can perform this service? Harken doesn't offer this. Thanks, Karl Maramu #258, "Have Fun!" sailing the Chesapeake out of Smith Creek, Maryland

We have the 35 kg Ultra fitted in 2015. We are very pleased with it as we sail constantly ever since.

I bought the 35 kg and it fitted the SM roller well without modification. I have had it for almost 2 years with excellent results.

Re: ULTRA anchor 45KG or 35KG
Hello Jarek. After much thinking I finally got a 45 kg Ultra after summer. I had some trouble fitting it into the bow roller, but with a slight modification I got it in its place. I am happy with it. If your need me to explain the modification that I did, let me know and I'll send some pictures, or we can set up a WhatsApp call to show you what I did. Victor Alendoy SM 314

Hello,
I am in a process of replacing my anchor and strongly consider ULTRA (45 or 35). I like to ask if anybody had already experience with ULTRA and how does it fit to the standard AMEL SM bow roller? Regards Jarek Zemlo NOA BLUE AMEL SM #201

Does anyone know where you can buy the tanks shown in Phillipe's post. I have one of those tanks and wanted to replace it but the only retail source I could find was Accastillage Diffusion. Unfortunately, they no longer carry them. My research says they are still manufactured but I couldn't find a retailer. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone,
We're in the process of buying a 1985 Amel Maramu & were surprised to find there is no holding tank on it.
Has anyone installed one in a Maramu? Did you do it yourselves or get a professional? We're looking at costs, in the water or (I'm presuming it needs to be done whilst out of the water for a through hull)?
Any information or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I would think you should be good with the gearbox you have. Any issues would have surfaced by 1200hrs.

If you have it reconditioned for peace of mind,do so. I would check the running temperature, to check for overheating.

Bill K, Thank you for this clear explanation of the Hurth/ZF transmissions. I haven't read this anywhere before and have never understood why my helm has a sign that says in French, not to put in reverse while sailing. When I switched from AutoProp to be MaxProp, I read that I should put in reverse until it stopped turning, then back to neutral. I have just finished a maintenance of the Autoprop and reinstalled it to see how it performs compared to the MaxProp. I now know that if it turns while sailing, it is safe to put the transmission in forward, but not reverse.
Now for the next question... When I repowered from Volvo TMD22 (78HP} to Yanmar 4JH4HTE, (110HP), I was assured by the Yanmar dealer and mechanic (Danny Ramos in Fajardo; top Volvo mechanic in the Caribbean at the time) that the existing transmission was ok to reuse. It has had no problems after ~1200 hours using the MaxProp. But now I am worried that it may not be quite up to the job. Does anyone have thoughts or recommendations about that?
Should I just replace it with a new, more robust one? If I use the Z25F, that means adding a shaft brake, right? Are there other robust mechanical transmissions that wouldn't require the brake? Any downsides to that?
Or have the transmission inspected, and put it back in if everything looks OK?
Or, with 1200hours already on the transmission with the new engine, just assume it is Ok and leave it alone?
Thanks again Bill K, your post is a game-changer for me!
Happy New Year, everyone! Kent & Iris Kristy SM 243

Hey Sarah and Trevor
Similar to Jim Watkins reply our holding tank is located behind the cupboard trim in the front head. It is a simple installation custom made from 316 s/s and fitted with a 'full' indicator light.
