This is probably the third time in 11 years I have done an in water, between haul-out lip seal replacement. Just routine. As soon as I see a trace of water I act. Hasn't happened too often and I don't expect any problems this time. If so I know who to contact.

Interested to know how people approached it as originally if was an interference fit 
How did you reassemble the disk onto the pin?
As a temp measure I used a 8 or 10mm (can’t remember which) Cotter pin
Worked well and easy to lift from above.

Yes, but in my experience the 20 meter standard cable length is not quite long enough to get to the B&G junction box, and there is very little difference in the 213 Masthead Mount with 20m of cable versus 25m. Each length is standard. Occasionally it is the mount and cable that needs replacing because the mount cracks and allows water to migrate inside. Most of the time it is a replaceable component in the 213MHU.

Sounds a good system. So far the standard amel seals have done the job for me. I have just done an in water lip seal change  I always carry a spare. A slight leak had developed on the sail to fiji from nz. The seal I removed had lost its lip tension and was a loose fit. On past experience I wont need to change it again before my next haulout.

I understand very well how the system SHOULD work and, if everything is new, the seals should work as designed.  Unfortunately, wear can change the system and, in my case nothing worked to stop the leak, including several adjustments of cable tension, and increasing compression by the pin.  As I said in my previous e-mails, I believe the problem occurs because the wear of the surfaces between the hull and the thruster that guide its motion result in a misalignment between the trunk and the seal, causing a lateral force on the lip seal which makes it incompetent allowing water intake.  The misalignment also results in the sealing surfaces between the donut seals and the hull are no longer parallel affecting its sealing action.   Following Amel instructions and wasting seals, money and time I realized that the problem could be corrected by designing a seal that would be made of a softer material and have lips that could maintain the seal in the presence of misalignment.   That solved the problem 3 years ago and I have had a dry bilge ever since.!!
In my design, I used two seals in series: a silicone wiper below and a silicone u-cup on top. This results in a slight protrusion of the seal above the horizontal fiberglass surface, as it can be seen in the pix I sent before.    I used silicone glue to secure the seals in place and was planning to add washers to secure them to the fiberglass, but after several months of procrastination, I realized that the glue was sufficient to keep the seals in place.  3 years later, using the thruster twice per week, almost every week during 6 months each summer, including a Marion to Bermuda race the seals are still working as new.  Since I add silicone grease to the trunk every year and, given the number of times (~50/year) that I use the thruster,   I am expecting that they will last a very long time.  So far I have serviced the thruster every year but have decided not to change any of the seals, including the donut seals, which looked in excellent condition.

I just received the quote from the seal manufacturer and it is as follows:

10 pcs. Silicone wiper $ 31.65ea.

10 pcs. Silicone u-cup  $ 32.50ea.


This it will be about $65 per set plus shipment and It will take  14-17 business days to ship from the order

You could call it a winter enclosure in that every gap and opening is battened down, but all of it rolls up or (unzips in panels if you prefer) to make it into more or less a bimini. Sailing in 30 knots of wind middle of Feb along corsica we were playing canasta in sweatpants at the table. Love it.... Bonus of course they already have the plans for the SM. In our case, it also involved making the headroom as tall as possible beneath the boom, so maybe a 6' person can stand fully upright.

Hello,

We got 1 fridge and freezer in our boat, we gave the freezer in the pantry a complete refit.

1. Step is to refit AMEL freezer insulations. We removed the complete old imsulation. Sorry to say but it was poorly build in terms of condens water block, open sidecuts at the old foam boards so the foam was soaked with condens. Beside tha this foam is only max 60mm what is not enough for tropics. Because of limited space we choose most efficient isolation boards.
It needs to remove the complete freezer. The only way to do so was to enter from the top and chop the wooden boards, also soaked with water and mould. Wood is not a propper insulation for freezers.
2. Step ist to install a condenswater block membrane.
3. Step install install sandwich vacum boards. These boards got factor 5 of insulation against standard closed cell foam. So with 6cm it eaquals 20 to 24 cm foam.
4. We reused the original stainless inside case. The hole process needs extremly carefull work that there is not the tinies hole left for condens water to enter. What you get is insulated like a thermos bottle.

With this upgrade of freezer the compressor stops 24h working and with that the cooling pump. But we did not touch the fridge. With that we got on times of freezer of 2h per day and fridge of 3h per day. The new controller cares that both units will work at the same time when ever possible. Example: so the cool pump wont run first for the fridge and 5 mins later when the freezer starts it will rum again. The "intelligent"
Controler cares that operating times are bundled.
We got these operating times with 30 degrees outside temperatures.

I did not change the pump, I changed the pump motor and motor controller to brushless. My pumps never failed it was always the brushed motor and bearings that wore out.

With these steps the cooling system works efficient.

I will look for the brands i used later and post it.

We have the correct official sample of   AwlGrip Desert Sand here at Vuda Point. As you know the painters in Durban got the "Desert Sand" colour wrong on our new hull side stripe when we lifted the waterline in South Africa. Now that we have new sails to put up (with the new Amel trim colour) we will re-paint the hull side stripe with the correct  AwlGrip Desert Sand paint at the end of our circumnavigation in Australia before we sell.

On a different issue - the "Amel Brown trim" - after 8 years of careful ownership we eventually got used to (and now actually like) the blue floors, and bright colourful curtains, but  we could never quite come to terms with the less than appealing "Brown" which Amel chose for side trim rails on all Super Maramu's! Because of this, we first tried a white trim (whilst in Thailand), as Amel did on the last 10 Amel 54's, but whilst that actually looks very nice on the 54, it never looked quite right on the Supermaramu against the Amel off-white gelcoat. We had seen one nice looking Supermaramu with white trim, but later noticed that they had actually "screwed in" a Stainless Steel bead/rod all the way along inside the white trim areas, and we were certainly not prepared to do this.

Based on this, whilst waiting for weather in Durban, we tried painting the brown trim with an "incorrectly mixed/coloured" Desert Sand. It looks barely OK, ...but not great...... and so we now wonder if even the correct Desert Sand colour would look any better on the side trim than the dreaded brown? 

The original Amel "Red Line" series trim colour was never to our liking either, almost too sharp a colour we felt, ... but we thought it worth having another look at the correct colour which Amel chose.

Failing all, and since we will soon be selling anyway, we may well simply go back to the original brown, but perhaps a shade or two lighter? Has anyone out there repainted this trim in a colour which they feel is an enhancement on the original Amel brown?

We have the correct official sample of   AwlGrip Desert Sand here at Vuda Point. As you know the painters in Durban got the "Desert Sand" colour wrong on our new hull side stripe when we lifted the waterline in South Africa. Now that we have new sails to put up (with the new Amel trim colour) we will re-paint the hull side stripe with the correct  AwlGrip Desert Sand paint at the end of our circumnavigation in Australia before we sell.

On a different issue - the "Amel Brown trim" - after 8 years of careful ownership we eventually got used to (and now actually like) the blue floors, and bright colourful curtains, but  we could never quite come to terms with the less than appealing "Brown" which Amel chose for side trim rails on all Super Maramu's! Because of this, we first tried a white trim (whilst in Thailand), as Amel did on the last 10 Amel 54's, but whilst that actually looks very nice on the 54, it never looked quite right on the Supermaramu against the Amel off-white gelcoat. We had seen one nice looking Supermaramu with white trim, but later noticed that they had actually "screwed in" a Stainless Steel bead/rod all the way along inside the white trim areas, and we were certainly not prepared to do this.

Based on this, whilst waiting for weather in Durban, we tried painting the brown trim with an "incorrectly mixed/coloured" Desert Sand. It looks barely OK, ...but not great...... and so we now wonder if even the correct Desert Sand colour would look any better on the side trim than the dreaded brown? 

The original Amel "Red Line" series trim colour was never to our liking either, almost too sharp a colour we felt, ... but we thought it worth having another look at the correct colour which Amel chose.

Failing all, and since we will soon be selling anyway, we may well simply go back to the original brown, but perhaps a shade or two lighter? Has anyone out there repainted this trim in a colour which they feel is an enhancement on the original Amel brown?
