Hi Eric,

I'll see if I can get my hands on some Loctite 542.  I've never delved into their products beyond Blue and Red, and I don't think I want to use Red.

The screws are flat heads (countersunk).  The ones provided by Amel, which were lost overboard, were Allen drive, and our new ones are Phillips drive, but they're all the same head style.

The threads must be absolutely clean , I would clean the machine screws with lacquer thinner and also the internal threads. Did they use machine screws or allen head cap screws?

 

With respect to the prop shaft. There should be NO side to side movement of the shaft. Possibly he was speaking about the prop blades.

If they wobble you need to overhaul the prop, if it is an autoprop.

When we were in Le Marin, we had a bunch of work done on our genoa furler -- Amel rebuilt the gearbox, Caraibe Greement replaced the forestay, etc.  One of the things Amel did (unasked) was they drilled out the rivets connecting the gearbox to the furler extrusion and replaced them with machine screws.  Three times now we've had these screws fall out while under sail.  I emailed Alban at Amel Caraibe and he suggested using LocTite.  I've tried blue LocTite on them to no avail.  I'm considering installing a hose clamp around the outside so they physically cannot back out.  Has anyone else faced this issue and come up with a solution?

Thank you all for the info.  I should have mentioned in my original post that we have a fixed propeller (I think its the original spare).  I'm a bit concerned about this domed mastic thing... depending on how you define "domed", it may have been in such a state when we last hauled out.  I've attached a photo.  What do you think?  We're no longer in the tropics, so it's too cold and too murky to go down and look at it now.

What purpose does the mastic serve?  Would it be harmful to remove it in the water and not replace it?  Presumably the rest of the bolt is exposed to seawater, so I don't see why the head needs special protection.

This is what I used:  The fiberglass insert is really fiberglass woven material laminated into the silicone for added durability.  I worried a little bit about this as water can wick into the cut edge but so far not a problem.  It also comes without the fiberglass and it would probably be ok as well.  I will be aboard in about 5 days and I will see if I can track down my dimensioned drawing of the wedge I had cut from teak. 

Silicone 1/8 " x 3 " x width of the door seal.  PN 05-00771-3   $5.35/ft.

Furthermore. Late July not good. 
Interested in what I would consider “minor” overhaul or “deep” service. Not down to opening the block and pulling pistons, but all the peripheral stuff, 4000-5000 hr. Service type stuff, to get her running in top form.

Hi Giovanni,

I do not have a photo because it is not visible. It is sealed with a black silicone sealant at the base of the C drive at the keel. It looks like a black silicone circle about 25-30 mm in diameter. The silicone should be flat. You can dive down and see it with a light it is quite visible.

Check that the prop is clean and also take note - when was the last time you greased it? You can lubricate the prop without a haul out if you think it through. We had a similar situation and after some underwater greasing the problem disappeared.

Hi all:  
I just posted a series of photographs showing the replacement of my companionway door seal.  I did this about 4 years ago.  I have owned the boat since new and the original Amel seal began failing at about year 10 and by year 13 demanded attention.  I was un-successful in obtaining original Amel material (no longer available).  I couldn't find anything in the automotive industry that I found suitable, so I fabricated my own.  I am an aircraft mechanic and almost daily utilize red silicone sheet rubber for engine baffling.  It is very durable and doesn't deform with fuel, oil, heat etc.  It has held up well for the last 4 years.  I fabricated from teak an obtuse triangular shim to hold the silicone seal material in place against the door in a squeegee like fashion.  The photos are in the album entitled:
"Modifications - Companionway Door Seal".  I'll try and post a dimensional drawing of the shim and a source for the seal material soon.

Craig,

I usually look up the torque specifications for the bolt if I want it really tight.

Most times just tight to my touch with a wrench or socket.

I recall looking up the torque for the C drive bolt but I don’t recall it .

Eric - is there a spec for the lbf (or N-m) to torque it to?
I just snug it with a socket wrench between "pretty tight and really tight" - seems fine.
My propeller, on the other hand, does specify 60 lbf for the shaft nut.

We had the engine mounts and Vetus coupling rubber balls replaced in Le Marin a few months ago, and this vibration does not feel similar to the one from when those needed replacement (and the mounts and coupling still look and feel fine).  This vibration is almost unnoticeable in the cockpit, but you can feel it when trying to sleep in the aft cabin, particularly in your legs (i.e. far aft).  It is rather intermittent, only lasting a few "thumps" at a time.  It seems to correlate when the boat is strongly rolling from one side to the other and often goes away when we're at a constant heel.  It happens more frequently at lower RPMs and it goes away completely at about 2000 RPM and above.  Our C-drive oil and transmission fluid look good.  A diver confirmed our propeller is clean, though he did ask me if the propeller pivots side to side when he came up.  I think he had noticed there is a bit of side to side play due to the rubber mount at the base of the C-drive housing connecting it to the keel.
