Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] rudder post packing nut size

Hi ,

Here is a photo of a wrench that I made to tighten the nut. It is made from a piece of 6 mm aluminum stock and cut out with a band saw. You can also make a long "L" shaped piece of stainless steel the vertical part of the L will hold the nut in place and the horizontal section is drilled for screws and this screws into the base below the nut. I expanded the stuffing box and now have 5 pieces of packing in the stuffing box. I have kept the packing in a plastic zip lock bag taped with duct tape near the rudder stock along with a packing nut. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Looking at your picture you seem to have enough room to tighten the nut 1/6 or 1/3 turn. Be careful as the nut is made of nylon. A rudder gland should not leak at all. The packing material is grease saturated and should keep the water out. Use a good fitting wrench to tighten the nut and turn it slowly. Do 1/6th of a turn and first assess the result before turning it any more. If movement is extremely hard, the packing material needs to be replaced first. Regards, Arno SV Luna, A54-121

Hi Eamonn, That type of manual switch is called a transfer switch. Did you also install a galvanic isolator in the circuit while you were rewiring the boat? What type of housing did you enclose the circuit breaker in your aft lazarette? Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Mark,
We had several of these mushrooms completely missing when we bought our SM ~2 years ago and could not find replacements anywhere. My extremely clever wife Denise came up with a "temporary" solution that is still working to this day. She used Sugru Mouldable Glue to make her own mushrooms and they have been working great for 2 years now. In the USA it's available online at Amazon, Target, Walmart, eBay, etc. However, its a UK based company so I am sure it available in the EU/UK as well. Some pics of one of her handmade mushrooms as well as the Sugru box are attached below: e We have also have had surprisingly good success using this to fix some broken "fingers" on cabin top lockers. It really is great stuff to have around the boat! Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Re: Pilot Lights
Hi Barry,
What light in the panel are you looking to replace? Is this the freshwater pump light? If so, there is a bulb inside the housing.
I used these (yellow) to replace the lights on the panel indicating the freezers we on. They fit with a little adhesive to hold in place. If your hole is too big, consider putting an o-ring on the new light and gluing it to the panel with a dab of contact cement.
With best regards,
Mark

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] rudder post packing nut size
Mike Longcor (SV Trilogy)
Hi Kent & Iris, and the Amel community in general, Sorry I cannot comment on the shelf life of the packing material but I do have a question regarding the packing nut and stuffing box. A small leak was noticed after our passage from Panama to Nuku Hiva. Just wondering if there's anything special with tightening the nut. My plan is to fit a large wrench, give it a ~1/8th turn and tighten up the siezing wire. Is it that simple? I know other stuffing box designs sometimes want a very slow drip to help with lubrication. Maybe that is only for propshaft stuffing boxes? Just want to make sure I understand the Amel design before doing anything. Should it be 100% leakproof and dry? Photos attached to show what it looks like on Trilogy. Thanks, Mike & Hannah SV Trilogy Kauehi, Tuamotus

I am wondering about shelf life of the packing for the rudder stuffing box. In 10 years I have only had to tighten the nut about 1/8 turn to stop a small leak. It’s 20 years old so I want to be prepared if I need to change it. Will this packing last indefinitely? What if I vacuum seal it?

Re: This should interest all members, especially Amel yacht owners
Bill, speaking as one of those who really, really, wants to own an Amel but doesn’t yet have one, I find those “maintenance issues” posts fascinating and one key way to learn more about the brand and the different models. When I finally pull the trigger, I feel like I will really know where to go to get help on any problem I could face - this forum (after using your excellent school of course!). This forum is unparalleled in the depth of the information on models, potential issues, maintenance tips and tricks, recommendations and even cruising ground advice - it is one of the key reasons I am totally sold on Amel over competing manufacturers (plus all Amel owners are just so damn smart and good looking so who wouldn’t want to be one!).
Don’t apologize for those kinds of posts…. even though we’ve seen hundreds of posts on how to replace bow thruster seals, I read every one and learn a bit more each time so that when I finally do get my Amel, I know that I should be able to tackle just about anything with reference to those of you who have shared your hard won experience.
For those new owners, you may wish to update your name/boat in the Amel Owner’s Registry https://tinyurl.com/AmelRegistry by submitting the update form at: https://tinyurl.com/AmelRegistryUpdate. We don’t post links to this outside the forum so your information should be safe there. I have yet to hear of anyone getting spammed as a result of this and you get to decide how much, if any, information you would like to share in any case.

Re: VP MD22L
I already isolated the water heat exchanger. Still same.
getting the salt water result I checked the freeze point of the coolant versus the sea water. What was in the heat exchanger had the same freezing point as the ocean so i tried a drop. Definitely salt water i did pressure checkes on every single tube in the heat ex. All good! Its now back in the engine. i used a high torque on the seals and also added some sealant. will see over the coming weeks if it’s fixed. -- Bernd SN 119 / Cascais, Portugal

Re: This should interest all members, especially Amel yacht owners
My wife and I are thoroughly enjoying our new Amel 50. Personally, I really appreciate the thought (Amel philosophy) that went in to designing our boat. As with anything man-made, our boat requires maintenance, which makes me even more thankful that I own an Amel.
Looking forward to enjoying life on the water and taking care of our boat for many years to come. Theo. s/v Paloma, Amel 50 #18
