Re: C-Map vs Navionics charts
It seems it very much depends on where you are.
In the South Pacific we have found C-Map to be very good. Navionics is very good in SOME places but definitely not all. In the Yasawa islands, Fiji, Navionics showed reefs where there aren't any and didn't show some reefs that are there. It also didn't show passages which are marked with buoys that have been there for years. In New Caledonia however Navionics charts seemed very accurate and the bottom contours particularly useful (is that because NC is French?) We have both C-Map and Navionics in Time Zero, Navionics also in the cockpit B&G plotter with forward scan (not very useful), C-Map in the Furuno NavNet II at the chart table and the cockpit and OpenCPN with GE2KAP satellite photos on the PC at the chart table and repeater tablet in the cockpit, which is very useful to display along side a chart to see reefs and shoals that sometimes aren't on the charts. Can't be too careful! Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Re: C-Map vs Navionics charts
Willem Kroes
Hi Joerg,
I use C-map on my board PC and Navionics on my B&G plotter. I agree with your findings. For this reason I bought another navigating app on my PC that allows me to copy (within this app) the Navionics sd-card onto the hard disk of the PC. Don't try to copy without this app; little chance to succeed and the risk of loosing the functionality of the Navioncs sd-card.as well. The app I bought is called 'Tiki'. This is the website: http://www.tiki-navigator.com/English/default.htm I use this app now during two seasons and I am quite satisfied to have the Navioncs chart not only on my plotter but also on my board PC. Re: Shore power contactor burnt out
Here is a source for the contactor: https://www.eibmarkt.com/cgi-bin/eibmarkt.storefront/5d3498c9007021c62746ac1e04020600/Product/View/NS0742502
I believe the original was rated 25A – I may be wrong about this.
Also, consider Amel as a part source on this. If the old part is no longer available perhaps they can suggest a replacement.

The full description of the original contactor is
LC1-D25008-M7. It is discontinued. I have ordered a used one on
ebay, so I could eventually do a like for like swap, but I have been unable to
find a good substitute new model. I would much prefer to use a new
product. Does anyone know what product would meet the specification of
the original (including rated for 40A continuous current etc.)

Craig, based on your advice, I am looking for a place where I can get the rewinding of the stator or rotor done. It was really great to read that it is not necessary to remove the generator. I will see around Sardinia, or points West of here. Much appreciated! -- Eamonn Washington Travel Bug Super Maramu #151 Currently in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy.

Re: 24v alternator belts
I forgot to mention that the alignment looks spot on, there is no side wear on the belts. Just the bottom teeth coming off. A damned mess in the engine room of course but no harm done.

Re: 24v alternator belts
So further to this I ordered a pair of Optibelt super xe-power pro XPB 1320 belts. I chose the toothed ones as the alternator pulley is quite small diameter.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Anyhow after a few hours running the teeth are flying off. I have checked the tension which could have been on the tight side, but not excessive enough. on close inspection it appears that the taper on the pulleys is different to the belts the belts taper in more sharply than the pulley so that the surface in contact with the pulley is only the top of the side of the belt. Looking again at the optibelt website the XPB profile is the only one that is 16mm wide at the top and 13mm high. The other profile codes are for 13mm wide and 10mm. I also measured the depth of the pulley which is 15mm so the 13mm high XPB does not bottom out. I will call Optibelt tomorrow and see what they say. Maybe I should not have gone for the toothed belts! Any thoughts out there re toothed verses normal wedge belt and taper on pulleys? 38 degree taper comes to mind as standard but I am not sure. Re: C-Map vs Navionics charts
I am sure that you all know this about Vector Charts: There is a huge amount of information embedded in these chart files. Some chart plotting programs allow you to select what will be displayed. If you are a user of OpenCPN, you have probably noticed about 100 display options. The same Vector chart on Other Chart plotting programs offer very few options. Re: Spade Anchor
Eamonn Washington
Hi
I have 2 spades, S140, the still unused and bubble wrapped spare from Ian and Judy plus the one I use daily. 2 years ago I anchored on Ios in F10 for a couple of days and It held while boats dragged all around me. In the straits of Messina, with a 4 knot current, we anchored and endured some 180 degree current shifts, and again it held perfectly. If I was buying new I would go for the S160 probably, although with the S140 I always slept well. I was impressed by the Ultra in boat shows. I believe the newer Rocnas are good, but not for me. -- Eamonn Washington Travel Bug Super Maramu #151 Currently in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy.

Re: Hot water pressure
David, The simple answer is air is getting into the hot system at a point where the air entry is not "wet." I'll take a wild guess: Here are 3 things to look at, in order of probability: There is some trapped air in the hot water tank and eventually will stop The electric thermostat is not turning OFF the heating element, allowing boiling inside the tank. If the pressure relief valve is located above the tank waterline, it may be leaking, allowing air to pass into the tank. Re: Panama Crime on the Caribe Side
Thomas Kleman
I have to admit, we have been cruising in this area the past 6 months and the recent uptick in crime has me spooked. The fact that there seems to be no police response is more than alarming. When added to the recent attacks north of San Andres off Nicaragua it paints a grim picture. I'm now considering pushing forward my Canal transit since it's easier than mounting an 88 mm Flak gun on a Super Maramu.

Re: C-Map vs Navionics charts
We always try to have minimum two different systems. Navionics is one of them, but they have a few nasty mistakes in The Bahamas as example. As back up we have oppenCPN with various charts, iPad and android om which we download what ever we find recommended locally.

C-Map vs Navionics charts
Joerg Esdorn
i have C Map on my Furuno TZ Plotter and Navionics on my iPad as a backup. I’ve been noticing that the C Map charts for the Med often lack detail where we cruising sailors need it most: many little bays suitable as anchorages are just blue without soundings. On the Navionics charts, on the other hand, I often have significant depth soundings and contours and rocks not shown on C map. And there are other inaccuracies as well. Just now on my way south to Carthagena I passed a fish farm 5 miles from land that is not on my C map chart but is shown on Navionics. And I just updated the C map ( but not Navionics).
Is this experience typical for C map in other regions of the world as well? I’m thinking seriously about buying Navionics for the Atlantic. Can you mix C map and Navionics on the same plotter? joerg esdorn A55 #53’ Kincsem

Thanks to those who responded with sensible advice

With time on our hands we bit the bullet first pulling the motor apart and discovered that the small springs holding the brushes in place needed a tweak so they applied more pressure to their task Then we pulled the arm apart including the small ball bearings gave all a good clean then applied lithium grease. Delicate and slow work to get the ball bearings in place. (Same system as the steering in a David brown tractor) Whole job took about 6 hours but the auto pilot is working again......whew!!! There is a shipment of motors and arms heading to NZ in early August......nga Waka’s name is on one of them Thanks again for the collective advice Best John Hayes Sn 41
