Can anyone with the combo of a SM, a Volvo Penta TMD22, and an Autoprop tell me what they get for max RPMs while underway in forward gear and full throttle?

Re: Additional solar location?

Hi Miles,

I have my entire dodger covered with flexible solar panels and I even covered a small portion of the deck between the dodger and the traveler well with panels.  I routed the wiring to a junction box inside the port side of the dodger and then ran cable from there inside the dodger to the propane storage (which I don't use as propane storage) and from there into the compartment containing the autopilot driver where I mounted the solar panel manager unit.

Works out well as i can stand on them with no problem.  Shading can be a problem if you are beating, but otherwise the panels are nicely exposed under sail.  At anchor, I use a preventer to draw the boom out to one side or the other to expose the panels.

Miles,
I have two 100W panel installed between mizzen shrouds and the main aft stay using some cheap aluminum profiles. Works for a couple of years now even with 45+ kn wind.

1 more is on top of the right side of the dodger (not yet installed when I took this picture), 2 on the starboard rails (visibible on picture) and the last two on top of my davits, totalling 670 W.

What I need: I need more confirmed attendance in Martinique. I think the minimum we should have is 20 Confirmed Amels.
What you get by attending: I have discussed this Rally with Martinique-based Sponsors asking for some help with the following:

  • A free haulout (splash, launch + 3 days) will be given to one Amel owner attending, sponsored by Carenantilles. .
  • A dinner at Mango Bay during the above dates for all owners attending the Rally, sponsored by Caraibe Marine and Caribbean Yacht Sales
  • A bus tour of Rhum Clément and possibly some other stop, possible, but no sponsor confirmed.
  • Berth Discounts at the Marina du Marin, possible, but not confirmed. I need help with contact at the marina.
  • Prizes and/or gift certificates from different Sponsors to be given by them during the dinner at Mango Bay, 2 are confirmed.
The early indications is that we will get most of the above and possibly more. I am still waiting on Amel to confirm that they will offer something. I will keep you posted and will add to the website when I have confirmation.

Hi,
I had same problems with my Eutikia SM 428_2003.
For rendom start look at red cable on start motor: the connection may be slack/oxidised. Anyway remove and fasten it. The contact MUST be perfect and steady.
For rendom shut down look at solenoid. Replace it or spry antoxidant inside from top. You have to remove the black rubber cover button. Than push it many times.
I hope that may help.

Hi all,

A question in behalf of a friend with a SM2K from 2002 equiped with a Yanmar 100HP 4JHTE.

Randomly, turning the key won’t run the starter motor.
What has been established and done so far:

The battery negative connection relay, when manually reset with the button underneath it, sometimes helps the matter.
The same relay, when manually activated while the key is turned always fixes the issue.
The relay was therefore incriminated and changed but the random issue remained.

All electrical connections between the cockpit panel and the starter motor were cleaned.

There seems to be a second relay that drives the the first one. We are a bit confused by that setup.

Independently (or not?), there seems to be an issue with the shutdown process too. Sometimes the manual “kill cord” needs to be used.

Anyone familiar with those issues? Any further tips?

In 2002, “Closereach” founded the Amel Yacht Owners Group on Yahoo Groups platform with a handful of members. Our group grew in membership to the hundreds when Closereach retired from our group and turned the group’s ownership over to Jose Luis Isasi. Jose led the group to over 1000 members and in 2018 turned the ownership over to me.

In the beginning and through a number of years, the Yahoo platform worked well for most of our members. However, as technology progressed, Yahoo Groups did not, and many of the members began complaining of numerous shortcomings with the Yahoo platform. Additionally, Yahoo simply stopped supporting the groups about 2 years ago and left known bugs and problems continue to irritate all of us. Lastly, we cannot ignore the numerous rumors about Yahoo and what they may do with the Yahoo Groups, especially since they no longer support their group platform.

Groups.io is a new and different platform for groups like ours. Although they offer a “free” group platform, it is not for us because we need more features and we are larger than the small groups the free platform is intended for. Groups.io has a PREMIUM platform which is generally designed like the Yahoo platform that we are accustomed to, but Groups.io has search ability that works, and many other tools that work.

The Amel Owners Group moderators and I have been testing Groups.io for several weeks and made the decision to move the Amel Yacht Owners Group to Groups.io. Hopefully the transition will go as smooth as possible, but I am sure that there will be issues. We are moving all of our data with us. There is a minimal cost involved ($110/year), which Amel School will pay for 5 years. I believe that this will give us plenty of time to plan for the years after the first 5. For instance, the Nordhavn Group moved from Yahoo, supported by members and shortly after the move Nordhavn’s parent company agreed to pay all of the costs.

The Moderators of our Group will remain: Mark McGovern, SM CARA, Mark Erdos, SM CREAM PUFF, Danny SIMMS, SM OCEAN PEARL, and Gary Wells, SM ADAGIO

New furlers on an Amel 54

Arno Luijten

Hi All,

Following the nice offer from Paul Hrabowsky (Bamar USA) I received the new EJF1 furlers a while ago and after some preparations I had the local rigger on Saint Martin replace the old ones with the EJF1 model. This took a little over a day with not too many problems. The fit was excellent after returning to my marina I could proceed with the electrical part of the job.

That proved to be a bit more complicated as the new furlers have a bit more connections to them. The MEJ furlers only have a motor with a plus and minus cable. The EJF1 has a electric brake and a thermal sensor added to the party.
I also ordered new Boxtron E14 boxes as the existing ones were not working anymore and the old MEJ furlers were connected to the Boxtron EM boxes.
The Amel yard connected the Boxtron boxes a bit differently then intended by Bamar. The remote switch has three cables but only 2 are led to the furler. The third (power) cable is fed directly from the circuit-breaker panel in the galley. This gave me some problems hooking up the thermal sensor.

Long story short it meant I added an intermediate connection box with a relay to enable the thermal sensor.
Added benefit is I now have a local (to the furler) switch to operate the furlers.

I also had to adapt both the E14 and the EM boxes to be able to use the connection boxes. For the E14 the change was minor. I had to add a "Vbat -" (minus) wire to the multi-connector . As this still had one pin free that was easy.
The EM box was a bit more work as the box was not designed to work together with the polarized brake power cabe (the brake on the EJF1 has a "plus"and a "minus") so I had to do some rewiring and add some diodes in the EM-box.

Altough the old furlers were still working fine, I must say the new one feel much more sturdy and make much less noise. In a later post I will put the old furlers up for offer in case someone is interested.

Arno,

Thanks for your comments. The support people were working on this yesterday and last night. Frankly, they "pushed the button" without me knowing they were going to be so quick and surprised our moderators and me...sorry about that.

I think we all are going to like what we have...I see some clean-up required in re-naming photos, but we had that issue before, but Yahoo gave us no way to re-name them.🙈

One small thing I would like to say about the migrarion. The mail I got to raise awareness about the move did make me think it was a phishing mail so I threw it away. I'm not sure if there is a way to make the announcement more "authentic",  but the domain ".io"made me doubt the reliability of the announcement.
Just my 2 cents....
