Cracks on Keel - Amel Super Maramu (1997)

Hello to All,

I found Amel SM (1997) that I like to purchase. I had first look yesterday and what is working me mostly is a crack on the keel, front edge with some rust coming out (see pictures). Is this a sign of water penetrating inside the laminate and corrosion of steel and bolts? Anyone with similar experience and advice? Best regards Jarek

  4. The suggestion that a wider stern is a disadvantage downwind is “interesting”.  Just ask anyone who has actual experience with going downwind in heavy conditions on both narrow stern IOR boats and more modern wider stern designs.  No comparison.  The 55 is a powerful performer in downwind conditions.  I just spent 1.5 days on a close to broad reach in windy conditions with the boat going between 8 and 10 knots under autopilot.   Great experience.  
  5. The cockpit design is simply fantastic.  A real, sturdy table with room for 6, very protected, great visibility and ventilation via the hatches on top and the opening section in the middle.  The benches are sure long enough for me.  There is no need to “pop” out because I can actually stand at the helm and look out.  The storage in front takes nothing away from the cockpit - just reduces the deck space - and is used all the time to store small items like cameras and cushions.  Nothing dangerous that I can see.  

 

Allow me a final remark.  It is obvious from your posts that you consider the 55 too expensive for your purposes.  I fully appreciate the price of the newer Amel because I started looking for SMs, then looked at 54s and then bought what my wife much preferred: a 55.   But I still like the SM and the 54 and don’t trash them on the web.  I would ask that you refrain from trashing the 55 with obviously unfounded statements.  Thank you.

Unlike many others we have never done this in our Super Maramu.  This is because we are always so alert and thinking. So we have never, ever made such a stupid, foolish mistake in KAIMI.

Oh, wait, that's right, I forgot.  We overflowed our Santorin (SN86) TWICE....BIG TIME!  I think the USCG had to drop us an emergency pump from a helicopter the second time....

I also thought about doing that but then a) what happens when the tank is full and you’re using the Dessalator so the filler is also closed, where does the water go? And b) how do you know when its full?

 

Surely a better solution would be to have an overflow, but where?

When refilling I drop the level pipe into the close position and block it. I need some strength to push it down and block it because I have equipped the level pipe with an o-ring seal which presses now against the outer pipe and so no water can come out from the small space between the 2 tubes. Very simple solution.

Jib Stay Guide inside Furler

HELP. Where do these go?! I'm sure they go in the Jib furler, but I missed putting them in!

I was sure that I would not miss how they went back in, but sure as s&%# I did! The furler is now back together and on the stay. I'm prepping to remove the stay and turnbuckle in anticipation of having to remove the furler to put these guys back in where they are supposed to be.

Ok I’m not an Amel owner, maybe one day! But i had a Beta 60 fitted to my HR Rasmus 10 years ago. I’m very happy with it and would do the same again. The point I’d like to emphasise is that I had great support from Beta by talking to them at the factory. They answered my worries and made suggestions. Ring them or email them.

I think it highly likely that the AGM start battery is not in the same state of charge as the house bank AGMs that have been charged quite differently. 
All house bank batteries should be the same brand, type and age to minimise differences in charging. Further I believe that if you have batteries in series parallel, the in between links should be connected in parallel banks and also with a battery balancer to ensure equal charging to each individual battery.
I'm afraid I agree with Bill, you should replace the complete house bank.

Hi to all,

I have sailed 3 Amels The Santorin the SM2000 and the 54, Iwe have also test sailed the 55. We would not buy for sure the 55 it missed main Amel features unfortunately. Lack of storage deeper boat higher mast can easily make you sea sick. This is important features in an Amel boat and the new at that time 55 was missing them for sure. For all the people that bought the 55 it was an Amel but the installed base has not upgraded to the new boat. If a company looses the installed base is not a good sign for a new design. The Amel 50 is different and I can not judge as I have not sailed on one. It looks promising but only a test sail can help a more extended sail on one is even more helpful. The needs change so it all depends of the purpose of the boat you buy. All boats is a compromise all have good and bad points all depends if your needs

Still couldn't store the kind of dinghy we use, hard aluminum 3.3m ready to take you to drinks 10 miles away in meter seas if needs be ;) ie the kind of dinghy a liveaboard might appreciate, anchoring farther out on a boat with the kind of draft any amel carries beneath her.

Hello everyone
After my genoa had wrapped around itself several times because the engine did not stop, my genoa now only turns in one direction, unrolling.
In the bath I can hear a click on pressing the switch in the cockpit. I have already exchanged the cables and used a different switch. Always with the same result. It just works in one Direktion. 
Does anyone know advice?
I would be grateful for a recommendation.

Hi Steve,

We purchased replacement genoa cars from Euro Marine Trading, Inc. in Newport, RI,  the US distributer of Antal parts in 2016. Cost was $259.84 each plus $29 shipping from Italy (prorated as part of their larger shipment). Euro Marine was familiar with the Amel configuration with the bales on both ends of the car, and that’s how they arrived, identical to the original.

What's the latest best answer on replacing the Genoa Fair Leads? My springs are broken, one wheel is chipped. Tried taking it apart, but can't figure out how to get the pin out of the center once the eye bolts are removed. Is that center bar screwed in? At $750 a piece online, I'm not jazzed about replacing the whole car.

Hi Bill Fletcher,
On my MARAMU #219 the Perkins 4154 has little more than 11,000 hours.
Also if is still running very well, I must be prepared to buy a new engine, perhaps, in a short time. Quite sure I will buy a BETA 60 , so I am very interested to receive from you all the possible details from purchase.........up to installation. I am sure that there are more guys in the same situation and each one of us will be very glad to share such an experience.
