On my last boat I used to have a fixed three blade prop and there was some vibration. It was a traditional shaft and stern tube arrangement. I spent ages realigning the engine. Then I pulled the shaft and sent it with the prop to a machine shop. The shaft was true but the prop was not balanced properly. I decided to buy a feathering prop and keep the old as a spare. No more vibration....So it could be the prop.

I have two friends who have a SM (1997 and 1999) who after having changed all the mounts and the coupling of the engine have a significant residual vibration.
Both have the distinction of having a fixed three-blade propeller.

Eberspacher 5L diesel heater

Hi all,
We have the 5L diesel heater on Wanderer. It wasn't working when we bought the boat, and I had it checked when we were in Jamestown last August. The tech right away found it was the PCB that was the problem, "corrosion". He replaced it and Voila! it worked! He told me to run the heater once a month to keep it dry. What I really liked about this unit, is that when it's raining and the boat is closed up, we can turn on the "ventilation" mode where only the fan runs but no diesel is burned. It brings in outside air and keeps the boat cooler. Also, when it's cold, it takes outside air with low humidity, heats it, lowering the relative humidity even more resulting in less humidity problems in the winter. Now ten months later we're back to it doesn't work and it has the same symptoms. It seems the PCB is again corroded. The PCB runs $250. Has anyone else had this problem? Is the unit not made for marine service? Most of the videos I've seen for repair advice are related to van installations. I plan to hit liberally with some Corrosion-X but not sure that's a solution. Re: Furuno Weather Fax do not get much and have switched to Navtex but to be frank the internet apps are more practical. Depends where you are.

We keep our boat at Herrington Harbor North (https://www.herringtonharbour.com/north/) They also operate another marina just 1 mile south (https://www.herringtonharbour.com/south/) They are about 20 miles south of Annapolis. Neither is cheap but both are very nice and very well run. North has a West Marine onsite and a great hardware store a mile away.

Bill beat me to the punch with mentioning the hawse pipe as a source of water ingress. The hawse pipe on my boat (Hull # 335) had chaffed and corroded through at the ceiling of the bow locker. The rust had caused the fiberglass in the area to crack and split. During a recent sail we had water in the two forward lockers from this source. Replacing with a stainless steel 3 inch OD (0.25 inch wall diameter) tubing in 316L SS (pricy at $10 US per inch) but it should be good for a long time.

Mark, What you bought on ebay is the same company that I mentioned to Ian. They started as a very small company, but had huge success with Cast Stainless Steel. I belong to the Royal Welsh Yacht Club and fly a blue ensign. It is perfectly fine to fly it from the stern.
It makes life easier to comply with British flag etiquette as I have to take it in at sunset or 9.00 p.m. whichever is earlier. This was introduced by Samual Pepys when he was Secretary for Admiralty and saw how much money was being spent on flags. So he decided that taking them down at night when no-one could see the anyway would immediately half the annual expenditure. And so it became ‘the tradition’. Yes, the burgee should be flown at the highest point of the boat. BUT, as so many aerials etc are also up there it has been officially accepted that it should be flown on the starboard crosstrees. EXCEPT, where you may be required to fly a courtesy flag it should take precedence on the starboard cross trees and your burgee and house flags transferred to the port crosstrees. And it is illegal in UK to fly the Union Flag. It can only be flown on a Royal Naval Vessel and is called a Union Jack. However, this is flown on the bow of the ship as the White Ensign is always flown at the stern. We are allowed to fly the Union Flag on the bow of the boat in Harbour, but it must be edged all round in white! Bet you wished you’d never asked! Ian and Linda Ocean Hobo SN96 PS Yacht Clubs were first given warrants to be ‘Royal’ and fly the blue ensign on the understanding that all members’ boats could be commandeered for use in time of war. Now not all Royal Yacht Clubs are given warrants, those holding warrants are more ‘Senior’ - and now it gets complicated........

Yes on Carango [Amel 54] I flew the ensign at the stern (but not on open Ocean) only anchored or on coastal sailing. And the Burgee on a huge in my case 1.5 meter pole which took the burgee above all others antennas and the like on top of the main mast. I never put the ensign at the top of the mizzen mast but the rules say you can. Good luck - not sure what USA yachts do.

Ian, HDI is a "Yacht School Preferred Vendor" and makes One-Piece Casted (not machined) Stainless Steel Exhaust Elbows. Their "AD" model is what I believe you want. Very helpful, Peter. So at anchor I must carry the ensign in the standard position for any Amel: at the aft rail. But while underway, I can carry it either in the same position or, alternatively, at the top of the mizzen mast if the standard position is "impractical". That's certainly what we always did on my family's ketch many moons ago. dThat gets it out of the way of the solar panels and out of earshot. Now if only the US Power Squadron would agree with those rules - mine is a US flagged vessel after all. :<). Additional problem is all those antennas at the top of the mizzen mast - I don't want the flag to get into the way of those. Hence my question whether anyone has done it and what the mechanics look like. Do you need a very long pigstick?
