Hi Pat,

you can get 15 to 20 degrees either side. 20 can be tricky and you need to play with sheet tensions. The Amel owners manual say reef if the true wind gets above 20 knots at which time the apparent would be 10 to 12 as you would be exceeding 8 knots and over 10 at times. If the wind does shift on you on a long passage, just go with it for some hours, it is quite likely to change back again and the deviation from the rhumb line wont cost you much in time.And if it doesn't change back you will have got yourself on to a good reach as you come back up on course. win win.  Another tip. If you get a sudden change that brings you on to a reach you can just drop the windward sail across to lie inside the other. You can carry on like that for some time. Another tip. The swivel at the top of the fore stay has a small locating tongue going into the track. This has a habit of wearing through. Without it it is near impossible to get the latch to hold the ballooner up. We are enjoying your face book posts

A few years ago, I burned out the furling motor. I ordered a new one from Amel and keep the old one to repair one day. I just had it repaired in Colombia at an electric motor shop (US$60 – Gotta love Colombia). Here are the pictures of the original. Perhaps this will help.

I think it must be a fairly standard electric motor otherwise it would likely be sold together with the gearbox. But maybe I am wrong about this.

Hi Allan, yes that eye bolt comes out. I approached it with trepidation but it came free quite easily. Take care it doesnt wring off. This still doesnt give enough room to get the car off. I removed the screws from the staunchon base and pushed it sideways. Some others have cut the sides off the track to get it off.

The cheapiest place is however Tunisia e.g. Monastir where I got all services done for a very low price.

I reviewed the specifications and data sheet for that product and it looks like their recommendation is sound.  It is neutral cure, and has good environmental exposure specs. 

Let us know how it works out.  I still have a full bag (a couple of hundred) of those plugs but I must admit that I get tired of timing them to length and installing them as they only last about 5 years.  I do believe that it is important to prevent water intrusion into those holes.  The stainless screws, aluminum track and mild steel backing plates is a bad combination when water gets between those metals.

So,in view of no comment on this issue, I assume that it is possible to remove the block at the FWD end of the genoa track to allow the car to be removed.
I can barely turn the eye bolt that goes through the axis of the the pulley block.

This is coming from my background as and A & P (FAA airframe and power plant mechanic).  RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) sealants, aka silicone, comes in two basic curing regimens;  acidic curing (Acetoxy or acetic acid) and natural curing.   The acidic curing is prohibited in aircraft as it is corrosive to aluminum structures (also applicable for aluminum structures on sailboats).  Acidic curing RTV is ok on fiberglass.  When selecting any sealant (RTV or otherwise) it is best to avoid acid curing type.  Dow 737 is a natural cure RTV that I use a lot on aircraft but there are others as well. I usually have to order it online (not hard these days) as it isn't widely available in chandleries or the Home Depot type suppliers.

When we did the gear boxes we just did the brushes

However both the I mast furler and Genoa curlers died. The latter full of water the former was a short in the armature 

Bugger!  So I have just had both motors rebuilt.  (We are heading in to the pacific early June)

The guy who dealt to the motors said he could build two new ones if I wanted but someone in the Amel group when I asked if anyone new a source for the motors response that I should just rebuild cause that’s what they did......so I followed that advice. I now have two completely rebuilt motors at  cost of $1100 NZ or about us$750

Parts available ex stock NZ.  

 

For the DC motor, we’d need to know power, voltage and speed in order to offer a replacement.

 

Prices exclude GST and freight.

Gary,

   That is a good point about not using an acid based Silicone on Aluminum.  I have not used the 737 but will give that one a try thanks for the tip.  I do have long term experience with the Dow Corning 3145 Grey silicone caulking on boats caulking in large windows, deck hardware etc.. This is a Mil-spec non acid based caulking that can be used even for electrical work.  This caulking has higher adhesion and elongation qualities than any other silicones that I am familiar with.  The UV and weathering resistance is the best I have seen in a silicone but this only applies to the Grey (there is also a clear version which is also a bit runny) which colour wise blends in pretty well with the aluminum Genoa tracks.   My bulk supplier has a minimum so when I just need a small amount I normally buy it on Ebay, in fact a small tube arrived just today.

   Thanks Gary for sharing your knowledge base.  I especially like the slider seal that you came up with.  My boat has what may be the original slider that has become hard and the noise that the slider makes in use is almost blood curdling.  (grin)  I really need to get that changed this season!

SM main furler motor

I have a new Bonfiglioli MVF44 gearbox on order for our mainsail furler. Does anyone know the proper motor that goes with this? I've searched the database and can only find information on the SN with a different gearbox.
