Re: Main Outhaul early SM 2K
Kent,
I have never seen an arrangement like that on the boom of a Super Maramu. The original metal frame with 4 bolts through it to the gearbox is necessary to counter act the torque produced by the motor gearbox combination, especially when you are tightening the outhaul to flatten the foot of the main, plastic doesn't make it. Sorry, but I would recommend that the boom be returned to the original configuration with the complete metal frame. WRT to getting the shaft out ...that's a common problem, because of the salt water ingress through the top gearbox seal. Maybe take the boom off and take it to an engineering shop that can press it out, and then clean off the shaft so it fits easily and coat it with Never Seize when reinstalling it. BUT I really think you need to have that gearbox support rebuilt as per the original. In any event your new paint will need redoing. Sorry Alan Elyse SM437

Hi Alex,

My large additional alternator is on the Port side with extra pulleys attached to the engine. On the later 54’s the additional alternator is on the Starboard side and uses the engine belt. If you have the same as me then my last set of belts only lasted 400 hrs, supplied by Volvo mechanic HYERES but not Volvo parts. I have just bought better quality Gates belts and I think these will last longer. Let me know if you need the size, details. Best Regards Barry “Lady Penelope II” Amel 54. #17 Pilos - Sailing Greece

Main Outhaul early SM 2K
Hi all,
I had my masts and booms painted last Fall, and had a helluva time getting the outhaul shaft out. The yard ended up breaking the cover plate of the gearbox, so I bought a new gearbox and motor from Amel (they wouldn’t sell me a new cover plate). I asked that they grease the shaft well with NeverSeize, and they said they did. The bracket isn’t like the one pictured here Now, 6 months after installing the new gearbox and motor, I want to replace the black plastic connector, but I can’t get the shaft to budge. I’ve tried tapping on a bolt in the bottom of the shaft while putting wedges between the boom and black plastic. With seals in place, I’m not confident any PB Blaster would make its way down the shaft. The way it’s attached to the boom doesn’t allow for a puller (pusher in this case) to fit between the gearbox and the boom. It’s only about 1/8” with the plastic part down as far as it will go. See pic below. Have you seen anyone remove the shaft with this installment configuration? Some special tool that will work? I hate to put something across the boom with the new paint job. Thanks for any ideas. Kent SM 243 Kristy

Re: Volvo D3-110 belt changes
The pulley that used to be on my Volvo has been changed to another model by a certified Volvo service shop in St. Martin 2 years ago. The change didn't impact the lifetime of my alternator belts.
In regards to the timing belt, based on the answer I received, I now think 1200h should be o.k., so I don't need to do this now at 800. If someone has pics and / sources to get the special tools, I'd appreciate. fair winds Alex SY NO STRESS

Hi Steve
You can also check with Amel. The might still have the replacement stickers.
I bought a set a couple of years ago.
BTW. They will also receive a new batch of the Leroy somer electrical motors for the outhaul system

Hi all,
I have a KVH Tracphone V7 and want to replace it with something cheaper and smaller, probably an Iridium system. I have two questions:
Would anyone be interested in buying my KVH, or know where in the southern Caribbean I can sell it?
Can anyone recommend a replacement system. My needs are for a backup system (I’m usually on long range wifi) and a system for getting weather and email/internet whilst out of range of land based systems. I basically need full internet functionality, on my laptop, for short periods at a time on a regular basis, say, 3 or 4 times a day.

Alex, Write JEFFREY KRAUS <jmkraus"at"optonline.net>. I believe that he found Volvo installed the wrong pulley. Please post what you find.

Hi Alex, if your alternator belt is wearing it is highly likely you have belt slip. Check your tension. Other than an unlikely substandard belt it has to be slip. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: Copper earthing/bonding strap broken in bilge on Amel 54
5 years ago we replaced the broken copper strap on Elyse using Bills diagram as a guide, but from 1/4" X 2" solid copper.
Followed the instructions with socket and extensions to get the old strap out. Drilled and threaded holes for all the bonding wires. Installed the bonding strap to the keel bolt. Stripped the bonding wires back to bare copper, new lugs and bolted them to the copper strap. 5 years on looks as good as new. AND no bonding issues. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

It does seem a short time for the alternator belt, age is also a factor. At least you can see it and determine when to replace it unlike the timing belt. Volvo sell two special tools, one needed and one nice to have. The needed one is a special puller to get the bottom pulley off of the crankshaft and the nice one is fitted to the bottom pulley to stop the engine rotating. Instead you can remove the starter motor and jamb something in there to stop the flywheel rotating, a bit crude but it will work. IMO it is worth replacing the tensioner, idle pulley and water pump when doing the belt replacement. Volvo sell a kit excluding the water pump. Denis Aventura A54-113 Cleopatra marina -Greece

Volvo D3-110 belt changes
The alternator belt on my Volvo D3 lasts ca 300h. In the French manual that I have onboard, it sais this belt should last 1200h. What's the experience in this group?
According to a certified Volvo technician from a Volvo dealer here in FLA, the TIMER BELT should last 1500h. I was about ready to change after 800h based on the advice from the former owner. What is the experience of this group in regards to the timing belt? Also, if someone knows which exact special tool I need to change myself and where to get that, would be great! Thank you for your advice. Alex SY NO STRESS AMEL54#15
