Re: BETA Motors
Dan Wilcox
Thank you Bill. I have been working with Stan and just purchased a Beta85 for Feierabend. My Perkins M80T was not rebuildable do to failure of aft motor mounts (original) and water getting into the engine through the exhaust. I have removed the tray and will be building it all back up over the next couple months. I will take pictures to document the process, but if anyone has any special asks please forward them.
Thanks, Dan Feierabend SM #86

Engine mounting bolt length Maramu
James Alton
Hello,
I am planning to remove and refurbish the original Amel mounts for my 1987 hull #220 Maramu when I return in June. I would like to have new mounting bolts on hand. I have removed two of the aft mounting bolts which measure 69 MM in length as measured from under the head to the end of the bolt. The bolt diameter is 12mm. I am wondering if the bolt length for the forward bolts will be the same? If the forward bolts are of a different length than the aft bolts would anyone know the length? Thanks, James Alton SV Sueno Maramu #220

Dear Maud, I am not sure if I responded to your email of 3DEC18, but in any case I no longer am in need of the aluminum pulley. I do have a need to replace the 4 plastic mounting bushings for the mainsail outhaul/furling motor assemblies (picture attached). Please provide price and availability. This is for 1999 SM#240 with the Leroy Summer gearboxes. Thank you, Mike Ondra

Dear Mike,
Just a short message to inform you that I have just received the aluminum black pulley. I had 1 pair on the waiting list for you.
Do you confirm you still need this item? If so, could you please confirm a shipping address and phone number?
Sorry again for the delay.

Re: SM2K Main Furler Gearbox & Motor Assembly shock absorbers and el. motor brushes

I believe I purchased something similar from McMaster Carr. Google McMaster. I would try a big alternator starter motor rebuild shop for the brushes. However the brushes are made in different harnesses, I would try Amel first for both those things. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

SM2K Main Furler Gearbox & Motor Assembly shock absorbers and el. motor brushes
Michael & Robyn
Dear Amel Group,
does anyone know where in the US to buy the cylindrical mounts / shock absorbers (4 black round rubber pieces with a through hole) that mount the furler motor / gearbox assembly to the main mast? Also does anyone know the after market spare part number and supplier for the motor brushes for the LEROY SOMER MBT 86M electrical motor. Same question for the bow thruster motor? Best regards Michael SM2K #417 RIPPLE

Hi Bill, The rope for the Opacmare pasarelle is very expensive- 350 Euro. I was lucky to find a new ( part 9324994926) on Ebay for 200 Euro. Next time I will try to built a rope myself using a protection for sheets( 5 $/ft) and put inside a rubberline and small dyneema. Wolfgang Weber SY Elise Amel 54#162 Annapolis

Re: Electric Motor for SM main outhaul/furler
David Vogel
Thanks Bob,
Yes, Didier, he is a real gem. He did our engine mounts in 2017, and the new wire-mesh filter (and stop-cocks) for the ONAN in 2018. Most comforting to know that the impeller is still intact.
I’ll try to track down some InterProtect here in Panama before we leave, and that can be another of the many little projects for when we’re whiling away the time, twiddling our thumbs with nothing else to do out in the remote Pacific. Ha - dreamin! (In the meantime, it the motor is safely tucked away and vacuum-sealed.)

Easy to do, we did all the work ourselves.

Re: The two "sticks" on the genoa top swivel
A short piece of fuel line and some contact cement make good "caps" for those 'horns'.
Having experienced a halyard wrap up there once, I wouldn't consider running without them. If you are doing regular maintenance on the swivel then it's far less likely the horns would touch the mast, but if the swivel jams even slightly the horns are the best defense against getting the halyard wrapped and broken at the masthead. Can't really explain how I discovered this. :) Gary W. SM 209, "Adagio" Beaufort, NC USA

Re: The two "sticks" on the genoa top swivel
After bending and straightening these (embarrassingly) twice, I replaced them. The ss rods are readily available on the internet and had a local machine shop cut the threads. (stainless being a bit difficult to thread cleanly). A couple of nuts and lockwashers and voilà. Mike Ondra Aletes SM#240

I’m interested in this subject too. I recently lost one of the black rubber/plastic covers from one of the ‘sticks’. I’d hate to think it was gouging the mast!

Re: The two "sticks" on the genoa top swivel
Martin Bevan
As others have stated, the two sticks are important. On our Atlantic crossing I found one on the deck, the anti vibration nut having vibrate off, I found the errant nut in the top swivel. In attempting to furl the Genoa the second “stick” sheered off. Not fully understanding what these metal stays did, we found out the hard way - without them furling results in slicing through halyards, inconvenient when the Cape Verde Islands are 100nm astern. In this instance I had one stay as a pattern and as fortune would have it a length of stainless bar to fabricate a second. In Martinique in 2010 I purchased 4 spares which of course I have never required.
Now to the point. We have replaced the original Bamar furler, foil and top swivel with a Reckmann. I therefore have 4 spares, which will work for a 54 or SM which I would be delighted to sell for €Offers plus the cost of P&P. Currently on board in Spain but I will be taking them back to the UK in June. I also have spare spare impellers for the original Reya water and air con pumps which have also been replaced if they are of interest to anyone. We also replaced an old motor about a year ago (it really was very un-repairable). Couple of things. Like you say, David, the replacement motors are a slightly smaller diameter. We used 3 rubber spacers and then silicone sealer/adhesive to fit it to the black enclosure holder. But first, the motor needs to be painted. The yard at Malta--Manoel Island Yacht Yard--recommended 2 part epoxy InterProtect which is what we used--several coats. Easy to do, we did all the work ourselves.
Also, at our later request Maud shipped us the brush replacement kit. It was, of course, more expensive than just brushes--I can probably find the part number and price if anyone needs it. The Amel parts person at Hyères told us that the new motor was more powerful than the old--I have not confirmed that but seems to work well. We just arrived at the dock in front of Chantiers AMEL - Caraïbes bound for Aruba. Didier is going to do some preventative maintenance in the form of engine mount replacement, carbon removal from the Onan, and an impeller strainer for the Onan. Will take some pics. Re: Main Outhaul early SM 2K
Hi Kent, Many ways to skin this cat. When this shaft seized in place on Aletes, we stacked cribbing under the gear box to the deck to spread out the load and used a hydraulic jack to push the shaft out. Having applied brut force on a previous disassembly and breaking the top cover of the gear box, this time I was careful to shim between the gear box and boom so that the force of the jacking didn’t break the cover. Now we pull and lube the shaft every 3 to 6 months. Mike Ondra Aletes SM#240 Rock Hall, MD

I’ll get my tool made and report on its efficacy, with pics if it works ;-)>. Will definitely take all advice, trim the key and the shaft, use NeverSieze, and remove every 3 months for regreasing.
I’ll spray some PB Blaster around the top seal, but doubt much if any will make it past the seal. Dry Ice and heat if the tool doesn’t work.
Jeez, somehow I make seemingly simple tasks into major productions. At least this one seems to have given most everyone problems... Kent Kristy SM243
Hi Gary, When I had to drive out the shaft with a sledge hammer I found that as soon as the key cleared the keyway the shaft slid out easily. I believe the key is the only thing that needs to be adjusted. I remove the shaft 4 times a year and lubricate it with high temp. stainless Neva-Seez and have had no further problem in over 10 years.
