Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Genoa sheet cars

Mike Ondra

Hello Alan,

We replaced the cars on Aletes last year. Methodology was to disconnect the stanchion at the forward end of the track and push it aside sufficiently to slide the car off the track. The challenge was getting the screws that secure the stanchion to the toe rail out as they were seized. See attached detail drawing indicating these machine screws are threaded into a steel backer plate. We could not turn out the screws and didn’t have an impact wrench/driver. Wound up drilling them out with cobalt drill bits, starting small and stepping up sizes until the stanchion was free. To reassemble we drilled out and tapped for a slightly larger machine screw.

One way to skin this cat.

Thanks Bill,
I now have a couple of sets of the sliders.
how did you go about replacing them ?
Did you need to take the car off the track?
If so, how did you go about that?
There's been some talk about grinding off the T on the track but I'd rather not go down that road if possible.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Cheers

The way Amel went about this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  I just don't understand what they were trying to accomplish by sending that email to current Amel owners.  Clearly it was NOT to get Bill to "cease and desist" in using their name and/or logo since I nor any of the Amel owners that I know have the authority to get Bill to do that.  If they are concerned about their Intellectual Property rights or liabilities they should have communicated their concerns directly to Bill (or had their lawyers do that if they are too cowardly), not send out an email to Amel owners about their "concerns".  The only conclusion that I can draw is that they did it in an attempt to defame and discredit Bill in the Amel owners community.  Frankly, that is just a shitty thing to do to any Amel owner, let alone someone like Bill Rouse who has done some much for the Amel brand and for so many Amel owners throughout the world these past 13 years or so.

Re: Max Volvo RPM

Gary,

I did not know that the AutoProp pitch stays flatter if the boat is not moving. I did know that RPM test while tied to a dock is not valid, but I did not know why. This explains volumes to me, and is so logical. Thanks for this!
