Re: AMEL 54 main furler
Teun, Furling solenoid is behind the Velcro'd panel just inside the forward watertight door near the ceiling, or behind the Velcro'd panel in the forward port side berth. I don't think this is the problem, but Willie should check it and the helm mounted toggle switch. Best, CW Bill Rouse 720 Winnie St Galveston Island, TX 77550 +1(832) 380-4970

Re: AMEL 54 main furler
Hi Bill,
Correct – furling motor/gearbox.
Did loosen as you described below; can furl & unfurl manually - no sail jam.
Did NOT rap the gearbox; it is night now; will do tomorrow. Willie is coming on board 2nd thing tomorrow morning; was holiday here today.
Brushes motor – didn’t think about those. l did study your AMEL bible but missed that.
Where is the solenoid – I tried to find in the manual as well as your “A B”. As this is similar problem I had 2 weeks ago with the windlass (not down but luckily did go up) which was the solenoid I have been trying to locate.
Thanks for the help.

First check the simple things:
I assume you are having an issue with the furling motor/gearbox and not the outhaul motor/gearbox.
Loosen the 4 bolts on the furling motor/gearbox, lower the unit enough to disengage the main foil fr the motor/gearbox, then test the manual furler with a winch handle. If it works, you've eliminated a sail jam. Next try the furler motor while disconnected. Take a rubber mallet a rap the gearbox sharply. If either of these work, call Willie and tell him you probably need new brushes in the motor. You may have spares... check my Amel Book for changing brushes.
It is possible that the large solenoid has failed, but I have yet to actually see this happen.
Get back to me. Best,

I have had very good experiences with my Superwind half way up the mizzen mast. It substantially contributes to balancing the power needs on Kincsem on most days without anyone noticing it is there. My 400 W solar usually contributes more here in the Med, and when offshore, my Watt & Sea blows them both away, but in my view it’s all about alternative sources. Wind is great at anchor particularly in the Aegean and sailing on all courses other than a broad reach or downwind.

Re: 100 amp charger on sm2k
David Vogel
Greetings all,
I have a top-of-mizzen Rutland 1200, installed 2018, cost to purchase-and-install ~$2,200-. The running count for the wind-gen since it was last reset 920 hours ago Arriving on-anchor, La Playita, Panama), is 547Ah contributed to battery charge; =~ 0.6Ah per hour, =~ 15W average per.hour contribution. Since last reset, we have been in a typical steady wind, but not-so-windy location. Previously, when in windy locations (meaning, wind in general blowing always 18 knots, but often 20-30), we were seeing easily double, sometimes triple this, on-average.
These overall production figures are somewhat BELOW what would otherwise be seen in a stand-alone wind-gen set-up (without solar), because at mid-day +/-2.5H when your solar cells pumping it in, or when the batteries are sensed as fully charged, the wind-gen switches off.
Also, when you are on genset (or motoring), sometimes the wind-gen senses this and shuts down also.
But when the wind-turbine is spinning, the output is within 5% of the manufacturers curve (case: windy at night, no solar in competition, for example).
Overall, with the solar and wind-gen, my need to run the genset whilst on anchor is reduced to about 50% of what is was before (no solar or wind). On longer offshore passages, we have only a few days here and there, so not really able to say. So I am still planning fuel burn for offshore work on the pre-wind/solar basis of 2 x 1.5 hour genset runs per day. I am happy with ‘free’ power from the shaft gen – enough to cover the NAV Station – when STW >7 knots. I switch the shaft-gen off if I really need to squeeze for speed, as I estimate that the shaft-gen pulls the STW down by between 0.5 and 1.0 knot. For really long-distance work (say, >3,000nm), that 1knot pull-down relates to an extra 2 days passage-time. There is always a trade-off.
I am glad to have the redundancy provided by solar and wind in combination, although this is only partial at best.
We are not at this time considering a second wind-gen. We are thinking to increase the solar to 800-1,200 watts. The panels themselves will pay for themselves over time, but the capital expense of the arch is harder to reconcile.
Cheers,
David SM#396, Perigee Pacific-bound

The Rutland wind mill having sailed from the Med to NZ lost its feathers in gusts of 45 to 55 knots off Kaikoura on the west coast of the South Island. It was replaced with a silent wind generator which, while expensive, has been excellent at maintaining power levels in the batteries and has a built in breaking system John Hayes NGA Waka sn41 Wellington

Re: 100 amp charger on sm2k
Kent,
I have to agree with Bill. We have a wind generator, it came with the boat when we purchased it and then broke. We replaced it with a clone but probably should have saved the money for something else that hasn’t broken yet.
If the wind is blowing 20-25 knots consistently it is worth it. But how often does this happen? At this wind speed it will put out about 5 amps per hour and help during the night when solar panels are sleeping. It is just enough that I do not have to run the genset in the morning to top off the batteries until the solar kicks in (we are running all three ref/frz).
You can do the math for the number of days you spend per year cruising, the number of days you will have ample wind and compare to the cost and wear on the genset running we you need the extra omph. My guess is you will find it is not feasible.
Right now we have winds of 5-10 knots and it is the same for the rest of this week. We are on the hook and the wind generator is totally useless.
If I had to do things over, I would add more solar and increase the size of the battery bank
With best regards,
Mark

I had an 80A charger from the time I bought Kristy and it was plenty. I’ve added Solar since then and rarely run the charger for more than 45min per day. Still thinking about a wind generator at the top of the mizzen, but haven’t pulled the trigger on that yet.

Re: 100 amp charger on sm2k
When I purchased Amelia in 2017 both Dolphins were dead. I replaced the 100 amp with a Xantrex inverter charger(Special offer at Budget marine Grenada)8 and a 30A Mastervolt, which still works fine but judging from this forum I shoulda gone Victron. It is easy to be wise. Still I am happy with solar, wind, 175A Alternator, Xantrex, Mastervolt. Between that lot we gonna be well charged whatever.....on my last quick passsage north from La Palma, my battery bank stayed at 100% for the entire passage despite running deep freeze and two fridges, radar and autopilot 24/7. Mind you the apparent wind was drumming permanent 20-35kn. The wind generators were cranking. Enjoying peace and tranquility of Funchal....
