It is not difficult to do!  You need to be on the hard and have access to a puller and an acetylene torch.  I heat the area of the propeller that that slips on the shaft (not the shaft).  Once it is hot I use a spray bottle to spray water on the end of the propeller ( this sound strange) but the water is sucked into the hub of the propeller and breaks up any corrosion between the hub and shaft.  I several times and then I put the puller on with tension and heat the hub again.  I usually use a breaker bar on the puller bolt after heating.  I have not experience a failure.


One further note when you reinstall the shaft make sure you dimple the shaft where the locking bolts secure the shaft to the transmission and make sure you use a locking wire.

Based on personal experience I also a zine on the interior portion of the shaft ahead of the stuffing box about 5 inches ahead of the box.  If you have a failure at the transmission connection (which I did experience) it is an easy fix.  Hope this helps.

Interesting....

We had that problem years ago and on advice, replaced the spring in the cylinder...didn't make any difference.
In our case it was because the pads were worn and the piston was at full excursion.
I did the washer trick and that worked for about two years and it started to slip again - more pad wear.
There is still plenty of meat on the pads so what I did was take off the brake mechanism, take off the front caliper and drill a hole in it in the direction of the piston thrust, threaded the hole and put in a bolt with a lock nut.
Now I can adjust for pad wear !
I really need new pads but Maud doesn't have pads that look like ours. One day I will get them relined at a brake shop.

Hello,

I just changed the brake pads on our boat and noticed on your video the forward arm of the brake appears to be contacting the mounting plate of the brake assembly.  Reference the attached photo of the far less clean brake assembly, there is a noticeable difference between the angle of the arms and the space between the arm and mounting bracket.

In #387 Amel provided a toggle switch on the "Permanent 24-12 Sailor Converter to turn it off...and it was the only device connected to the Hot 24volt Bus. That said, I have visited a number of Amels which have other devices connected to the Hot Bus...in every case those connections were made after the Amel was delivered by Amel

We had 6 weeks to get the painting done, and the contractor had 5 guys on the boat 6 or 7 days a week, and finished a week early. My experience with Powerboats was excellent, and had no complaints. As a matter of fact, it was the best service I’ve ever had in any yard. I stayed on the boat while the work was being done, and .the yard put a house AC unit on my main hatch which cost us about $4 a day. Best money I ever spent, and it kept us very comfy. I was happy I stayed on the boat, as I caught a couple of potential mistakes, and solved some problems that only the owner could. FYI...Liz went back to the USA after a week and a half, and can’t say that I blame her. 

I’m not on the boat at the moment, but can send you detailed contact info within a couple of days. In the meantime, the contractors name is Allen Dowden, and if you contact the office at Power Boats, they will put you in touch with him. He has been in the fiberglass and painting business there for over 30 years, and knows his stuff. I’m hoping he has not retired, as he was contemplating that when we were there. I hired a trusted Spanish speaking guy who stayed on my boat 24/7 and supervised the work. I was present during daylight hours. I used a pilot from the yard and high tide to get into the haulout slip without running aground. 

They have a 40-ton travel lift that will bend your life-rail unless you do something to mitigate this.

Hello Kent and Iris. I am sure you will receive a variety of opinions regarding your boat yard question. Here is mine based on having worked in several different yards as a young man and later having  been involved with shipyards all over the world when selling boats and getting them serviced/improved/refit.

 

The basic rule is that unless you have a long term, completely satisfactory, totally trusting, respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with a shipyard, don’t leave your boat there for repairs unless you are there at least once a day. Being in foreign countries only adds to the degree of probable challenges when you factor in language barriers and cultural differences.

Even at yards new to you that come highly recommended by folks you trust, you need to have a serious “sniff test” and a cautious attitude until you are confident that the yard has the ability, tools and expertise to complete any job to your satisfaction. If you are uncomfortable with any aspect of the process, don’t move forward until that situation is rectified. Get estimates and job descriptions in writing and assume nothing. You don’t need to be strident or a bad ass. Just try to be as clear and concise as you can be and any good yard that wants to earn a profit and keep you happy as well will appreciate these efforts. Again, assume nothing.

 

You reason you need to visit the yard every day that work is being performed is to catch anything that isn’t as agreed or looks like it might evolve in a situation totally off the rails and a major train wreck. While most yards can be trusted to do basic bottom service unsupervised, Amel’s are different enough with the Amel drive and bow thruster that you need to understand the job and how to properly accomplish it to supervise the repairs if you are not doing them yourself. I have had two cases in recent years where a client left his boat in a shipyard for bottom service and other repairs and was quoted a bottom prep job that included ‘heavy sanding’. Turned out the heavy sanding was sand blasting, something that every laminate expert will tell you should never be done. The only reason this sand blasting was discovered was because the boats soon manifested severe osmotic reactions/blisters and sand was found imbedded in the outer layers of laminate during the blister repair process. Other medias are a better choice for blasting of old paint but never let anyone sand blast the bottom of your boat.

 

Not trying to be paranoid, but “Trust but verify “ is the cardinal rule as you proceed. There are plenty of really top notch yards throughout the world. Do all you can to ensure that the yard you are considering is amongst them. Good luck.

Hi All,
We need to have Kristy’s decks and cabin sides worked on. When I pulled the stainless steel trim around the windows off to remove the interior panels off for revarnishing, I found significant blistering of the gel coat under the trim.

We’ll be taking her S to Trinidad, Columbia, or Panama by this Spring and want to find a place to have a professional job done at a reasonable price.

Does anyone have experience in one of these venues? Is the work such that you would leave the boat with them for a few weeks while it’s being done, or would you want to be there the whole time?

All of the yard workers that worked there at the time I hauled were not yard employees and were unsupervised. I hired a trusted Spanish speaking guy who stayed on my boat 24/7 and supervised the work. I was present during daylight hours. I used a pilot from the yard and high tide to get into the haulout slip without running aground. 

They have a 40-ton travel lift that will bend your life-rail unless you do something to mitigate this.

Also, if you need just a worker for cleaning, polish, etc: Dwayne Shuffler 1-868-286-4947 cell dwayneshuffler@... I used Dwayne for cleaning, polishing, and trained him on how to paint the faux caulking on Amels. He is the one that painted our deck faux caulking cream color using a striping tool. Also, I had the paint mixed at the paint shop at Coral Cove Marina.

While you are there be sure to meet Jesse James (jessejamesmembersonly@... and 1-868-683-5202). Jesse is the station host for SSCA and OCC, he operates a taxi and tour service, he runs an association of local businesses which are in the marine business (YSATT). Peaks, Coral Cove and almost every business in Chaguaramas is a member of YSATT.
