I replaced our 1994 Eno with a new one four years ago. It is nowhere near as well built as the original. Had several bits needed replacing within 6 months. They were very good about it but I guess they are competing in a mass market nowadays. We wish we had spent more now on a better cooker as it is the third most important item on the boat after sails and engine.

Gary,

Thanks for this and ALL of the other detailed instructions that you have shared with this group over the about 15 years that have been a member. I do not think anyone else has contributed more to the success of the Amel Owners Group than you have. I have been thinking about you and your beloved SM Liahona, lately and have been hoping for an update on the hurricane repair.

Hello and Merry Christmas to
everyone:
Some time ago I promised to
write up and share my experience overhauling the mizzen
furling gearbox/cranking mechanism on the Super Maramu 2000.
I found the file with the included pictures too large to
upload to this site.  Efforts to trim the picture sizes (at
least with my limited computer savvy) didn't help and so
this is an attempt to make that information available to the
group.  I have posted the file in my DropBox account and
here is a link to access it.

It is a
Word Doc file so let me know if that doesn't work and I
will post it as a PDF.
I am
new to DropBox so let me know if this doesn't share
properly.
Bottom line is
that I can see few scenarios where the mizzen furling

can be lubed via other methods than disassembly, as depicted
in the document.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dinghy for a 54

Courtney,

When you have that measurement from the back of the mizzen to the mizzen traveler, DON'T FORGET that the overall length of the dinghy includes the aft portion of the pontoons which exceeds the transom.

Also, when considering a dinghy like the 3D or Highfield brands, be sure to consider the oar locks and paddles located on top of the tubes. This becomes an issue when inverting the dinghy for storage. Because of the oar lock issue, I recommend either AB or Caribe brands for Amels. The style and location of the AB and Caribe brands, easily allow for hoisting the dinghy to an inverted storage position on the deck aft of the Mizzen.

I hope this helps in your selection process.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that including the aft tube extensions alongside the Mizzen mast, I believe that you can store a 3.0 meter dinghy longitudinally and inverted on the aft deck...please check me on this...it could be only a 2.9m. However, diagonally, you can easily store a 3.2m, possibly blocking the deck access on the starboard side.
"Measure Twice, Buy Once."

I’m not sure how much bigger the aft cabin top is on the 54 but, we have the hypalon version of this dinghy and it easily stows on our 53 (diagonally). Off shore we lash it to the aft cabin top. On the hook it is on the arch davits. It is a great dink and we’d highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new tender.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Larger stove?

Paul,

In addition to Eno, I would also suggest looking at Dickerson Marine stoves (made in Canada). We admired one on a friends boat as they seem very well made. I’m not sure of the sizes but it’s worth taking a look as they ship worldwide. All the sizes are listed on their site: http://dickinsonmarine.com/

We would like to upgrade our original 2-burner ENO stove.  Our options include a newer nicer ENO but all ENOs appear to have the same dimensions, which allows 5.5 cm of unused space on either side of the unit.

So I am wondering if one could make more efficient use of that space and install a larger stove/oven?

Does anyone have or know of a brand/model that is larger than the ENO and still fit in the space, which is 605 mm wide?

Thanks,

I’m not sure how much bigger the aft cabin top is on the 54 but, we have the hypalon version of this dinghy and it easily stows on our 53 (diagonally). Off shore we lash it to the aft cabin top. On the hook it is on the arch davits. It is a great dink and we’d highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new tender.

Thanks Ryan... I was keeping that link alive until I figured out whether or not if I deleted the original message inn this thread, it would collapse the entire thread.  It didn't so I deleted the original message with the link in it.  The only link to the Registry should now be:

I didn't want to delete the links inside that file as it would have meant having to redo the registry on another sheet.   I wish there was a way to put the sticky up at the top for the location of this thread of the Registry and Update Forms but it's beyond me to do figure it out.

We bought an AB Dingy but are not happy with it. It started to part between the Hull and the tubes after 6 month. First after many angry mail they agree to repair. The repair man told us that this is not uncommon. Besides that it showed corrosion after 6 month and that is not under warranty. I would newer buy an AB dingy again. The customer service is sub standard

Hello Alexandre,

Good luck with your insurance … as mentioned before, insurance companies are interested in your money; their obligations are seldom respected and they will fleece the unwary every chance they get.

Meanwhile, your write ups have been very helpful to me; my BT ceased functioning 6 months ago but as we were in “islands” and anchoring, the problem was minimised.  Now in a marina in NZ, I had to ask for dinghy assistance to get me in the berth.  Upon investigation on the hard, the gears are destroyed and the casing cracked.  Being in NZ, everything nautical is possible.  Now getting new gears made as well as the Delryn prop shaft.  The reason of the failure… is possibly as I’ve been using a cast alu prop instead of Amel’s own.  The prop is heavier and caused the 2 pins going from the Delryn shaft into the large bottom gear to break free and fall into the base of the housing.  REMINDER:  there is normally a good reason Amel uses a certain type of material/weight in each of their engineered components.

Back to the Amel prop for me!!

Insurance update.
As you might remember, the insurance (Helvetia contracted through the broker DeLassee) was holding on the partial payment because I did not pay “this year’s premium”.

Summation:
A year ago, the insurance offered a settlement 27.16% less than the agreed value of the contrat.
I said no and hired 2 lawyers.
Under french law, which my policy is governed under, the insurance has to pay the amount they offer as a “partial” payment.

The way they hold that payment, was by using article 8.4.4 from their policy saying that “insurance is canceled in case of total loss, etc. BUT ADDING: becomes effective the day the settlement is paid”.
Since I said no to the insulting amount and no payment was done, then I consequently still owe them the premium until we settle… (which could take years…).

Well, that last sentence is “illegal” (article 1170 of the old french law) because: “it is a clause that deprive the obligation from the debtor (the insurance)”.
In french:
https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/affichCodeArticle.do?cidTexte=LEGITEXT000006070721&idArticle=LEGIARTI000006436553&dateTexte=&categorieLien=cid

The partial payment was made in November.
I called the new person handling my case at the insurance to tell him that by now he must know that I am not going to let go, and that I am still owed money from the collision in Nassau in 2014… (where I was at zero fault, but forced to accept 50%).

Last week, the insurance made a better offer, BUT WITH A TRICK.

First, the new settlement offer is not the “Agreed” value for which I have been paying the premium for all these years, it is 14% less and represents the market value of a similar SM2K.

Second, the trick is that if I accept their new offer, then the insurance is no longer responsible for any liability, etc. Which is a big NO. Why? Because the Simpson Bay marina has been trying to get money for a year and by sighing that document, then I would have to deal with them, hire other lawyers and could have to pay some damages.
So my lawyers are writing a modification saying the settlement only concerns damages to the ship, but let alive liability, etc.

I keep an eye on the forum and am touched to see time to time my illustrations are being mentioned.

Wishing all the Amel Owner a Merry Christmas and sending my most since wished for 2019: Good Health, Happiness, Love, Success, Travels and all you wish for.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Courtney,

Check with the Highfield dealers in the USA. The guy we purchased from will ship most places in the world. So will the dealer in Canada. Being in St Thomas there would be no duty from mainland USA. What about Puerto Rico?

I had the 310 and it fit great but lost at sea last month

Now I am in St Thomas and there are no Highfield dealers Achilles are available but I have no information on how good they are.  A friend found a 12 ft fiberglass for 1800 used and I was wondering if it would fit as that's a lot better than another 4890$

thanks for the input

Courtney

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dinghy for a 54

I am now looking at my 4th and final dinghy since December 2017: most likely an OCTENDER; made in NEW ZEALAND.

1st dinghy was on board when I got AMELIT; a brand new 3.9M HIGHFIELD center console & jockey seat with 50HP outboard (with 6 hrs on the clock) Way, way too heavy for the davits to take on passage.

2nd a 3.2M RIB from NEW ZEALAND – tubes way too small causing water to come in. Sold within 2 weeks at same price I paid.

3rd  a 3.5M hard shell SmartWave as I needed something quickly bcoz “2” couldn’t keep my (female) guest dry. But SmartWave too heavy (120kg + weight outboard) in case beached by low tide and also too heavy to get on board in case of storage on aft sun deck.

So – although expensive and on back order, I am looking at ordering the OCtender; all owners I consulted in NOUMEA are very happy with their OCtender (3.5M = 48kg – the all carbon version is even lighter but 50% more expensive).

Best Regards Teun
