I was in Grenada after hurricane Ivan. I did see the damage that was done to this boat. I knew the owner, a Swiss gentleman. The damage was catastrophic, the bulkheads were cracked and seperated, the Hull was severely damaged the masts were gone. I was really surprised someone was able to repair it. I recognize the boat because that box structure by the nav station is a fridge. I would be very careful.

I had some folks ask about the Rendezvous bags and if I had any of the hats left. If you want extra, your welcome to buy them at my cost. Bags are $30, hats $18. Only 5 bags left & 12 hats. I am not in the swag business, it’s just for fun. Send me a direct email if your interested, before my kids appropriate them. Merry Christmas

Seawater pump (engine room) and hose blockage to toilets

Duane Siegfri

I recently overhauled the Jabsco Par4 pump for the forward head.  On testing I noticed that quite a lot of flow was diverted to the engine room sump (bilge) compared to the aft head, and the flow into the fwd toilet looks pretty low volume.

I'm wondering why Amel put the small pipe into the siphon break draining to the bilge.  It's not on top of the anti-siphon loop like a relief valve, but is on the pipe going to the top of the loop.  In this location some of the water pumped is always going to go to the bilge.

I'm guessing this is to prevent a deadhead condition for the pump, since it does not have a pressure sensor, in case the hose becomes plugged.  But why is roughly half of the forward head pump output going to the bilge?  It seems odd that I didn't notice it until the new pump.

The only thing I can think of is that the hose has become partially plugged:  with BARNACLES?  Is the solution to run Barnacle Buster into the line and let it sit overnight?

Is there something else?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Cleaning the hella fans

The only way is to take them down, remove the blade and wash the blade and cage completely. Do not coat them with anything that will attract dust like WD40. Lubrication of the bushing should be done with silicone grease... don't overdo this.

Hi bode. A while back I had sail maker on board looking at my main sail. The inspection included me furling and unfurling the main. They were gob smacked at how good the Amel system was, better than any other they had seen. My car lasted to 2017 and probably 60 to70000 miles (we had done over 40) not bad I would have thought. I also successfully,  at minimal cost rebuilt it and expect a similar life. When I have time I will post photos and description of what I did. Fortunately I wasn't paying myself an hourly rate,  but it was fun.

Regarding the Amel Register; the database of Amel boats and owners.  I find the collection of this material particularly troublesome especially when the AOG is part of the source material.  I believe there is some small expectation of privacy i.e. the AOG is a closed group.  The amount of data collected would have any marketing manager salivating that desires to target a group such as this this group.

Mining data that you desire to collect is intrusive and I believe the potential for misuse by any number of third parties is quite high.  As we have seen over the last few years no data is truly secure.  As much as you believe you are providing as service I feel this is a disservice to Amel owners and serves no purpose that will provide any benefit to current owners.

My request to the AOG forum moderators would be to expunge any existing list or database currently in the AOG forum and prevent in the future any similar databases from being resident in the AOG forum.  Although most of  this information is a matter of public record it is not now or ever should be part of this forum.  In my opinion the AOG forum is for the exchange of ideas and information to benefit Amel owners in the operation and maintenance of their boats, pure and simple.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: New Speakers - Old Compass - Different Readings

Arno Luijten

Hi All,

I just replaced the cockpit speakers for the Fusion 4 inch model as well. These are coaxial, so basically a two way system. Although they sound much better then the Amel speakers (made by some italian company callled  Sea & Syphony) I would say that almost any speaker would sound better then those pieces of junk (from audio quality point of view). From sound quality point of view the Fusions sound OK but not great. That would be quite hard for a 4 inch speaker anyway. I'm thinking to put some damping material behind the speaker as the mid-frequencies sound quite harsh. I'm using the new Fusion Apollo head unit that has some Digital Sound Processor facilities that adapt the speaker signal to the speakers type and place where located. That does improve things as well.

I think that good speakers typically have a large magnetic field because of the size of the magnet. I did look at this company to contain that problem: http://www.lessemf.com/mag-shld.html but I could not find weather resistant speakers with audiophile performance in the 4 inch range.

So I'm sort of happy with the Fusion speakers as it's a good upgrade to the original stuff. I must admit I found the originals looking a bit better form aesthetic point of view. But mine were corroded pretty bad.

Cheers,

Arno

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Antal main outhaul car for 1999 Super Maramu 2000

Steve,

I was going to comment earlier, but decided to stay out of the discussion. But, I have something that I believe is important to add...

I believe, when considering what was available to Amel in the early 80s, their solution for the operation of the motorized outhaul, using mostly off-the-shelf components, was genius. The only modification to the Antal car and track that Amel made was done to overcome improper horizontal load on the car shackle. Amel did this so very simply by welding a stainless steel crossbar to the shackle, which reinforces the improper horizontal loads and, at the same time, separates the vertical load. BTW, I have seen too many Amels that replace the Amel-modified shackle with a stock Antal shackle... maybe this happened on your Amel. And about half of the 50 or more outhaul I have seen are rigged wrong.

When talking to Antal about this car and shackle, I doubt that anyone at Antal today would know about the simple shackle modification made by Amel. In fact, I am not sure if there is a better solution today for Amel. BTW, the 55 doesn't use an Anderson line handler, but what is used on the 55 is similar. The next time I am on a 55 (probably Jan 2019) I will inventory all the components and report back to you and others here.

Hi, Mark!
Once again, thanks for your awesome help with this. I was looking at the Fusion speakers as well, but thought that the DC-Gold's were the cream of the crop. Guess those Beryllium magnets they use makes great sound, but have another drawback.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Amel Yacht Owner's Registry

I have received input from most of the Moderators.

We all want this to be an open forum where Amel Yacht owners can get to know each other, ask questions, and share information. For the past 12 years this has worked very well with few exceptions.

Our group's framework is controlled by Yahoo with very little control given to us. For instance, everything you post is searchable. However files and photos cannot be downloaded unless you are a member.

Anyone who has posted files or photos has discovered that there is no censoring involved. Let's don't start.

I see nothing wrong with Alan's file, assuming that it only contains information that was either given directly to him by the owner of that information, or Alan received permission from the owner.

Let's try not to make rules that restrict the freely flowing information that we currently have.

BTW, Yahoo does have a database feature that might be easier to use in this case. Alan, you should check that out. Databases are only accessed by members.

James,

The original Amel speakers were fine and did not affect the compass. Unfortunately, the paper cones eventually rotted. Then I purchased some that affect the compass, in a big way. The speakers I ended up with had magnetic shielding and also did not affect the compass. The compass is amazingly sensitive.

Mark - do you mean that the original speakers affected your helm compass?

I noticed that mine is a few degrees off from the "magnetic" reading on my GPS.

I placed a compass near the speakers (which are original) and the magnet in them is quite strong!

I have a rate compass a couple feet away that is meant for my radar overlay on the chartplotter and I think that might also be affected.

Steve,

I learned a lesson here with the speakers. I found some great sounding 4” DC Gold speakers with good bass but the speaker magnets were so powerful they threw off the compass and I sold them on eBay. I shopped for a long time and finally found a really great replacement pair with magnetic shielding that did not impact the compass. The best part is they sound awesome with a good range and are not too expensive. They will almost fit in the existing cutout from the original speakers. You will need to file the hole just a little bit bigger and drill more screw holes. You will need to fill the old holes with something like MagicEzy. MagicEzy - Cream is a really good color match. Other than that, the fit is pretty close even though they are round.

I have had these for about 4 years and highly recommend them.
