Hi Eric,
Yes, I use Howes and Biobor Jr. I didn’t think Howes did anything to prevent or kill microorganisms. I haven’t been able to confirm any increase in fuel efficiency with Howes, but I do think my exhaust ”mustache” on the port hull isn’t quite as bad as it used to be. What I’ve been doing seems to be working well, but if I start finding dirty fuel when I get to the Pacific, I may add a system like you have on Kimberlite. Kent SM 243 Kristy

Re: Anchor Chain Size and Length
Thank you!
I hope the Ultra works as good as it looks. I wasn't looking for a SS anchor but Amel told me that anchors with bars wouldn't fit the A50. So, we'll see... I've used Manson Supreme and Rocna on previous boats and I was very pleased by them.

I had no problem. I read that there is a government law that when you check in a Marina, only 2 officials are allowed to board your boat. Only 2 did, they did not search the boat, was more to seat down and fill up the paperworks. One of the official was amused by a stuff monkey I had. The “Commandante” made his speech that he accepts donations, etc. I said thanks and didn’t give anything. Several weeks later when I checked out, 3 (instead of the 2 allowed came) but no issue either. I heard from many other sailors that did not check in a marina their horror stories… so I highly recommend checking in a Marina… Work done by the local at first was good (cleaning the stainless), but as they did more work the prices increased and the quality decreased… I remember the last job was an offer to clean the water line, I don’t remember the amount they ask, but it was insane and I said I would do it on other boats being paid for less. Hi Kent,
Did you ever try Howes fuel treatment instead of Biobor? https://petroleumservicecompany.com/howes-meaner-power-kleaner-12-32-ounce-case/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIx8LAkdHJ4QIViYrICh1MjQOZEAQYASABEgJr8fD_BwE. This product is guaranteed to give you 10% better fuel economy, will not allow the diesel to gel, and absorbs the water so it will be burned with the fuel, in addition to dissolving the bacteria in the tank. It is used by large fuel depots to store fuel. I thanks to PenAzen) had Amel install a 2 way valve in the fuel fill, The fuel goes to a pump, then through a racor truck fuel filter The filter itself is about 12 inches high and 6 inches in diameter. It then goes into the tank. I have never had any fuel problems and the fuel tank is spotless. I use a 2 micron fuel filter in the dual racor fuel filter before it goes into the engine fuel filters. I believe the problem with using Biobor is that it kills the bacteria and the dead bacteria accumulates and sits on the bottom of the tank. Most boats have a dip tube for the fuel so sludge on the tank bottom is normally no problem. Our tanks draw the fuel from the bottom so any crud in the tank goes directly to the Racor filters. I have close to 7000 hours on my yanmar with no problems so far, Fingers crossed. I would suggest you try it. You can get it at most auto supply stores. I bottle is good for 350 gallons. If you use it, the first time, I would double the recommended quantity. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376 -=-=-=-=-=-=-

Yes, agreed. We are so pleased to have been able to make it. What a wonderful event and opportunity to meet Bill and so many other good folk we have been communicating with on the forum over the past 7 years from Australia. In addition Island Pearl II won the lucky dip draw for one of Bill's extremely comprehensive yacht school Manuals last night. What an excellent publication with such clear instructions and advice on every single aspect of maintaining and improving an Amel. Found it hard to put it down after dinner last night when I discovered it even covered so clearly a number of NMEA information accrdd tips we just happen to be grabling with right now in terms of linkage with OpenCPN. Well done Bill and thank you all. Colin & Lauren Streeter SV Island Pearl II, SM#332 Martinique.

At the bottom of my fuel tank there is a valve that shuts off the fuel, it is connected to a rod on the shelf in my Mid-ships bunk that will turn off the fuel from outside the engine room if there is a problem in the engine room. FYI, behind the valve on Kimberlite there is a mesh screen that is factory installed to keep large stuff from getting into the fuel line. After my racor filter there are neoprene hoses that go to the genset and engine. If you wanted to put a valve in the line to polish your fuel this is where I would put the valve. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376 Hi Erik, I am not on the boat now. From memory the fuel exits the bottom of the tank directly to the Racors but There is no valve on a lower sump. I could drain off the Racor filter very easily. I suspect though that the pick up is just off the bottom of the tank. So the sludge will remain between the fuel pick up and the very bottom of the tank. There may not be any sludge. Maybe I am seeing gremlins where there are none! Nick Amelia AML 54 -019 La Palma

Met y’all in ShelterBay a couple of years ago, and brought you a pkg in SanBlas. You kept an eye on Kristy while I was gone for several weeks. Sorry to hear Kelly’s having back problems. I’ve got a bum back too, and raising the cockpit cover a few inches made a huge difference getting in and out. I’m back in Maryland for the Summer, or you’d certainly be welcome to visit Kristy. Best of luck with the back and finding your boat. My back is infinitely better since I started doing some gentle yoga.

We are in in the San Blas, Panama at the moment. heading to San Andreas in a couple of weeks on our Nautitech. Whenever Kristy has been sitting for a while, I put a 6 foot 1/2 inch PVC pipe down to the bottom of the tank and pump a gallon into a clear container. I let it sit for an hour or so, and if there’s any water or sludge, it will sink to the bottom and be clearly visible. I use BioborJr every time I buy fuel. So far after an initial professional cleaning 10 years ago, I’ve had only clear fuel. I didn’t change the Racors for the first 4 years and never had any water or sludge in them. Since then I change them once a year and they always look new. Kent Robertson S/V Kristy karkauai@yahoo.com USA cell: 828-234-6819

Hi Duane, I had a very good time in La Bahia de Luperon in 2014. Officials were coming aboard but they were very friendly and professional. Compared to the rest of the Caribbean it’s rather cheap and you can buy fresh veggies which are locally grown and not imported from the US. Also a good place to get Trojan Batteries at a very low price. For me the DomRep was one of the best places in the Caribbean, but I do speak Spanish.... Fair winds Rainer Huthmacher

SM Chain Counter
Thomas Peacock
I am in the process of trying to fix our chain counter, which has not worked since we purchased the boat several years ago.
Troubleshooting thus far points to a probable short in the sensor up by the windlass. I have purchased a nearly identical new sensor; the only difference is the old sensor is "normally closed", while the new sensor is "normally open". Anyone have any thoughts on whether the different open/closed setting will make a difference? Thanks as always to all on this invaluable forum. Re: Anchor Chain Size and Length
On my A50, Amel is installing 100m of 10mm G4 chain. I plan to splice 30m of 8-plait rode at the end of it, for the deeper anchorages, or stronger blows. The factory recommended the 35kg Ultra anchor, but I will have the Ultra 45kg. I know it's on the heavier side, but I like to sleep well at night.

Re: Insurance update US East Coast & Bahamas- Pantaenius US
Craig,
I think the remarkable part of the Pantaenius requirements is the fact, in my opinion, it would be impossible to meet the requirements anywhere in the Carib. When I first read these changes as a part of our policy, I inquired as to where in the Carib they felt I could meet the requirements and wondered if they had specific boat yards in mind when they wrote the specs. I never heard back from them regarding this. It would seem logical to me if they are to have such specific regulations in terms of meeting the policy requirements they would have at least a couple of places in mind where they had done some reconnaissance to help their members comply. But, I guess not.
We have heard good things about Geico, however they coverage geography is limited. Look into Novamar. Novamar uses Geico as an underwriter, along with other big names. They are A-rated. They have an easy to read policy, reasonable rates and none of the stupidity of Pantaenius. Here is a broker who can help with a quote (or you can get one online):

Re: Insurance update US East Coast & Bahamas- Pantaenius US

Given this topic is about ways to keep your boat further south, this is probably irrelevant, but I feel compelled to add it: I had BoatUS coverage on my old boat and dropped it when they switched to Geico as the underwriter. I keep my boat in the water year-round in Boston (when not cruising) and Geico requires the use of a bubbler to receive ice and freezing coverage, even if bubblers are not normal practice in your location (it's not in my marina). I think there were a couple other caveats as well, so read the policy carefully. For now, I'm still happy with my Pantaenius America coverage, but we'll see what happens when it renews.
