Your thought process was the same as mine. I thought about the Force 10 too because I liked the counterbalanced door. And the one we really liked was the GN Espace. They are so well built. But we were replacing a number of major items at the time so bought the ENO to save money. We still regret not buying the GN Espace.

leaks in forward head should be easy to track, 2 fresh water lines only with limited connections, even though difficult access calls for slim & able fingers.

The Rolls Royce of cookers is the GN Espace range (gn-espace.com). They are in a different league to the rest on the market. Built in the UK but expensive. Sometimes you get what you pay for! I had one on my previous boat. Superb!

I still have the original Eno on my 54 and am happy with it, but it is not the same quality at all. The grill in particular is poor.

Paul,

This is strictly a matter of personnel preference, and style with cooking and lifestyle, and I have to say up front I have never used an oven without a reliable thermostat, but I would never get an oven without one.  

It is entirely possible that I am just spoiled...

I appreciate the feedback.  I looked at the specs on the Dickinson marine (expensive!) and it was the same size.  The Force 10 stove has some nice features like a thermostat for the oven but it is only 1 cm wider and the oven capacity is just 1 L greater.  All in all i think the convenience of getting an  Eno, which can be purchased right here in Martinique relatively inexpensively and delivered to my boat is going to be the deciding factor.  i hope the quality has not decreased too much.

This sounds like a great DIY project to build your personal fiber-glassing skills. It's easy-peasy, very forgiving to work with, and good fun plus it'll give you great self-satisfaction.  On the bow thruster foot it can't help but look perfect (well, maybe after relaunching :-)

We just replaced the Eno on our A54 with an Force 10 4-burner. We had the same problem that the width of the cavity is about 60 cm and marine stoves seem to hover aroud the 50 cm wide mark. The Force 10 is 52, so I placed two filler pieces of wood left and right. The original stove was modified by Amel from the looks of it to have the gimbal points at the burner level instead of at the level of the top of the oven. I don’t know why they did that. I could not find a gimballed stove aroud 60 cm wide, Force10 has a wider one but that is about 70 cm wide.
I’ve looked for other stoves as well. There is GN-Espace, a UK brand, very nice, very expensive. Most other stuff I could find is pretty poor from build quality, even Force 10 is not what they used to be since they were bought by Eno (still better then Eno though). But at least they still carry the clever mechnism for the oven door and they are reasonally easy to clean.
In the end you pay crazy money for a stove that has much less build quality then a domestic stove. Things like self cleaning oven walls and so are completely unknown in sailboat stoves.

We have a 2.60 m Highfield Classic Inflatable RIB and stow it on the aft cabin top with the aft pontoons either side of the mizzen mast. It JUST fits (bow to transom) between the mizzen traveller and the mizzen mast. Any bigger and we couldn't stow it that way and still use the mizzen properly. The dinghy is a bit smaller then we would like but it stows securely with ratchet tie downs and when travelling long distances that's more important to us than a larger dinghy.

When you have that measurement from the back of the mizzen to the mizzen traveler, DON'T FORGET that the overall length of the dinghy includes the aft portion of the pontoons which exceeds the transom. 

Also, when considering a dinghy like the 3D or Highfield brands, be sure to consider the oar locks and paddles located on top of the tubes. This becomes an issue when inverting the dinghy for storage. Because of the oar lock issue, I recommend either AB or Caribe brands for Amels. The style and location of the AB and Caribe brands, easily allow for hoisting the dinghy to an inverted storage position on the deck aft of the Mizzen.


I hope this helps in your selection process.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that including the aft tube extensions alongside the Mizzen mast, I believe that you can store a 3.0 meter dinghy longitudinally and inverted on the aft deck...please check me on this...it could be only a 2.9m. However, diagonally, you can easily store a 3.2m, possibly blocking the deck access on the starboard side.

Now I am in St Thomas and there are no Highfield dealers Achilles are available but I have no information on how good they are.  A friend found a 12 ft fiberglass for 1800 used and I was wondering if it would fit as that's a lot better than another 4890$

I’m not sure how much bigger the aft cabin top is on the 54 but, we have the hypalon version of this dinghy and it easily stows on our 53 (diagonally). Off shore we lash it to the aft cabin top. On the hook it is on the arch davits. It is a great dink and we’d highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new tender.

I replaced our 1994 Eno with a new one four years ago. It is nowhere near as well built as the original. Had several bits needed replacing within 6 months. They were very good about it but I guess they are competing in a mass market nowadays. We wish we had spent more now on a better cooker as it is the third most important item on the boat after sails and engine.

In addition to Eno, I would also suggest looking at Dickerson Marine stoves (made in Canada). We admired one on a friends boat as they seem very well made. I’m not sure of the sizes but it’s worth taking a look as they ship worldwide. All the sizes are listed on their site: http://dickinsonmarine.com/

Some time ago I promised to write up and share my experience overhauling the mizzen furling gearbox/cranking mechanism on the Super Maramu 2000.  I found the file with the included pictures too large to upload to this site.  Efforts to trim the picture sizes (at least with my limited computer savvy) didn't help and so this is an attempt to make that information available to the group.  I have posted the file in my DropBox account and here is a link to access it.

Bottom line is that I can see few scenarios where the mizzen furling "gearbox" needs to be disassembled.  The gears can be lubed via other methods than disassembly, as depicted in the document.
