Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Genoa sheet cars
We have an issue with one of the genoa cars on Elyse. It would appear to have lost some bits underneath.
Can someone identify for me exactly what car it is Make / Model on an SM2000? Thanks for any advice Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Hi there Christian

Many thanks for this. It took me a while to understand what both you and Danny were explaining so clearly - push the stanchion towards the middle of the boat. Makes total sense but for a while I was thinking fwd or aft as it’s he first boat I’ve had with sensibly mounted stanchions on the side of the toe rail. I’ll have a go! Sadly my drill has just packed up so sounds like I’ll be needing a new impact driver before I start this project. The metal on one of the cars that holds the (shackle and block )has worn a little so I might need to invest in new cars. The “lifting wheels” on my mizzen sheet track have broken so I’d be interested in your washer fix. I’ve had the cars off (nice and easy on the mizzen traveller at least!) but I couldn’t figure out how to release the lifting pin that the ‘lifting wheel’ is attached to. Is there a trick? Many thanks for your help Miles

Simon,
Depending on your location (you don’t specify) there are a couple of people who could survey the boat who have unprecedented knowledge of all things Amel. This is my advice to you.

Hello I have been looking at an Amel Santorin, hull no 11, built 1990. When visiting the boat a few thing came up that I feel need to be investigated further. Perhaps I can get some help here and hear what your thoughts and opinion are about the pictures., https://www.dropbox.com/sh/egdes22h26j0p37/AABPpd0sTDCdkI3RVInHc6XTa?dl=0
1. When looking at the upper angle gear for the C-drive (in the engine room) I noticed that it looks different from other Santorin boats that I have looked at. This one is built a bit earlier than the other ones I have looked at so perhaps Amel did things a bit different on the early Santorins. Also the under water part of the C-drive looks like it's different. The oil plug is located on port side instead of the aft part just below the propeller. Does anyone know more about these differences and if this earlier construction is just as good as the later one? https://www.dropbox.com/s/tiib8y6yoj6rtwy/DSC08718.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/3apy3idmg2fqgtn/IMG_2725.JPG?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/61d2ai7j6s3o5zg/IMG_2730.JPG?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/hko9rxsufb10mbs/LRG_DSC08755.JPG?dl=0
2. When looking at the aft part of the C-drive, just above and below where the propeller shaft enters the gear there is a crack, it's clearly visible in the pictures. Is this reason to be alarmed or would a normal repair of the glass fibre be enough as a repair? Any thoughts regarding this? There was no oil leaking from this crack but I assume there must be some metall case inside the glass fibre that contains the oil and the gears. https://www.dropbox.com/s/xijskvqqlhc28t0/IMG_0981.JPG?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/yy8tvl570sjsxrg/IMG_0982.JPG?dl=0
3. One of the hinges for the rudder is missing a screw. I can see that there is like a nylon bushing inside and that the screw is supposed to thread into this bushing. This I have not seen on the other Santorin I looked at. I can also feel that there is som play in the rudder when moving it sideways. Is this to consider normal? https://www.dropbox.com/s/2sqwpiol2filuhe/LRG_DSC08762.JPG?dl=0
4. Forward, where the anchor rests there is a crack running across the deck and also down into the drain "track" on the sides. I have seen this on some other photos online so it seems like other boats also have this problem. What is causing this? Has the anchor been pulled up too hard or is there some weakness in the forward section? Does anyone know more about this and how it's best repaired? https://www.dropbox.com/s/zohnqyjn1jp6w5o/LRG_DSC08675.JPG?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/iwk29fk7torcp1f/IMG_2690.JPG?dl=0

Hi Miles, No problem. I would try the screws first, if they come out it is a very simple solution. If they wont come out try the other option. I would wait until needed because worn still functions and if they come out it isn't an emergency. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

We are currently
insured with Pantaenius and felt forced to shop for insurance based on the
requirements of the policy that changed drastically after the 2017 storms. We
are uncertain of our plans but one of two things will happen, we will transit
the canal and continue west or loop back around the Caribbean. Either way, the
current policy was going to be troublesome. It is cost prohibitive for us in
the Pacific and in the Caribbean just about impossible to adhere to the area restrictions
and requirements during the summer months.
We spent 2018
hurricane season in the ABCs, mostly Bonaire. We understood we did not have
named storm coverage while there since we could not comply with the policy and
our only option was to run to Colombia in the event of a named storm. We had no
issue with this strategy since statistically speaking the area is safe.
After looking
at several companies, we narrowed our choices to three, in order of preference:
Y-Yacht (UK), Novamar (USA)
and Top Sail (UK). Y-Yacht and Novamar did not require a survey. Y-Yacht has
asked for some pictures of the vessel and both have asked about age of rigging
(need to be less than 10 years old or an inspection is required). I am leaning
toward Y-Yacht since the wording of their policy is in everyday language and
very clear to understand (like Pantaenius used to be). It is even posted on their
website. All policies we are shopping are “declared value” policies.
Here is the
wording from Novamar:
Navigation: U.S. Atlantic and Gulf
coastal waters and inland waters thereto of the United States between Eastport,
ME and
Brownsville, Texas, including the Bahamas and
waters of the Caribbean Sea, excluding the waters of Cuba, Haiti, and
Venezuela. It is warranted between 1 July and
1 November, navigation is restricted to either north of St. Mary’s, GA or south
of
12
degrees 40 minutes North Latitude.
Novamar allows
for a vessel to stay in the waters of Grenada, ABCs, Colombia or Panama during
hurricane season with a plan. I have worked with an agent for Novamar, let me
know if you want his contact info. He was very helpful.
Several
companies I contacted do not allow Colombian waters. Since this is where we are
now, that was also a bit of a deal breaker. If you plan to head west, be aware
some companies are doing this. Not really sure why.
In addition to
the above, I understand Gowrie’s Jackline (IMIS) policy is recommended by
others sailors. However, they required a full out of water survey less than 2
years old – no exceptions. This was a deal killer since the cost of the survey
was not offset by any savings in premiums. The rates were in-line with those of
Pantaenius. All the other companies we contacted quoted rates lower than Pantaenius,
some significantly lower.
I have not done
side by side comparisons of the companies I am looking at to our existing
policy because it is obvious to us our current policy no longer meets our needs.
I think you are
going to need to change insurance companies if you wish to stay in Grenada or
the ABCs.
Hope this
helps.
With best
regards,
Mark

I just heard from my Pantaenius Broker who told me last year
Pantaenius was considering reestablishing a southern border for the hurricane
zone. He wrote:
"The
southern border would be south of 10 degrees. So, that is most of
Columbia and Panama. Grenada is above 12 so does not qualify. You
can get Grenada but will have to be able to do one of our Stormplans and will
have a Large named tropical storm deductible."
He
didn't say whether this was official yet or in the works.
We're
planning on going down the eastern Caribbean this year, and were planning on
Grenada for a haul-out during hurricane season, but now I'm wondering where we
could go south of 10 degrees? Cartagena is even north of 10.
Any
suggestions on marinas/boatyards south of 10 in Columbia? The closer to
Grenada the better obviously. We were planning on going from Grenada to
Central America anyway.
In
the meantime I've asked for a quote from Y-yachts.
Thanks,

Re: Shaft brake conundrum, any ideas appreciated!
Hi Porter
I have the same problem with the shaft break. Allthough the Pad's on mine A54#55 are not the same. When the shaft was starting to turn I squeezed a metal rod between the holder and forward-arm (see pic's) as an interims fix, which is working well, but it's not a longterm solution. I thought the pads are wearied (down) so I ordered new pads. Maud told me they have only one model, which where same as mine. When I received the new Pad's I realized they where the same thickness. I started thinking to re-engineer the break-bad holders because the Amel solution is a bit unreliable when I see other's issue with it. Does anyone went to the process and problems as well and found a permanent reliable solution. If there are any other ideas out there there? Best regards Ruedi WASABI - A54#55 Marina di Ragusa, Sicily

Wheel lock for wind vane
smiles bernard
Hello all
I’m considering a hydrovane for our vintage Maramu. I really miss having a no power, wind aligned self steering system. The hydrovane, like the wind pilot 2 required that the main rudder is locked off. Unfortunately my steering wheel hub is missing its lock. I found parts of it in a cupboard on the boat - so assume there is a problem/reason this was not refitted. Does anyone have any info about how this is supposed to work? Or any pictures/diagrams? It would be great to get an idea of how this works before taking things apart on anchor. I believe I have the ‘Morse 401 Commander’ steering system Many thanks in advance for any insight All the best Miles Maramu 162 Grenada

Interestingly our situation looks exactly like yours. Same 45mm piston extension but... on ours the pads miss the rotor by 0.5mm. Bill Rouse suggeted a very plausible explanation: regarding the pivot bolt- the apex bolt for the calipers- perhaps there was a sleeve bushing going over that bolt that was not replaced- resulting in a small but meaningful shift in the fulcrum latterly. As some may recall we’ve had engine in and out several times recently. So question to the hive: does anyone recall a sleeve bushing that goes over the caliper pivot bolt? Alan. Thanks your you comment! Looks like I may try that as a solution! Might you be willing to send a photo? What I did do is shift the assembly aft by about 2 mm. Now I’ve got great grab on the rotor with the forward caliper pad, moderate with the aft pad. Thank you for everyone’s thoughts On a separate note: new Volvo D3-110 “H” model in. So far: quiet, smokeless and digital 😕. Galapagos here we come! Porter A54-152

hello Miles unfortunately easiest way seems to be removing screws from stanchion base & move it aside to allow car to slide out & back in once replaced (mine had a broken 'lifting-wheel' replaced by home made washer); Impact screwdriver became a permanent fixture in the tool-shed on our 1982 Maramu. I did not date cut off the end of the track, neither tried my luck on the screws holding the tracks on deck. Shy ? Objet : Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Propeler shaft It is not difficult to do! You need to be on the hard and have access to a puller and an acetylene torch. I heat the area of the propeller that that slips on the shaft (not the shaft). Once it is hot I use a spray bottle to spray water on the end of the propeller ( this sound strange) but the water is sucked into the hub of the propeller and breaks up any corrosion between the hub and shaft. I several times and then I put the puller on with tension and heat the hub again. I usually use a breaker bar on the puller bolt after heating. I have not experience a failure. One further note when you reinstall the shaft make sure you dimple the shaft where the locking bolts secure the shaft to the transmission and make sure you use a locking wire. Based on personal experience I also a zine on the interior portion of the shaft ahead of the stuffing box about 5 inches ahead of the box. If you have a failure at the transmission connection (which I did experience) it is an easy fix. Hope this helps.

Re: Shaft brake conundrum, any ideas appreciated!
Interesting....
We had that problem years ago and on advice, replaced the spring in the cylinder...didn't make any difference. In our case it was because the pads were worn and the piston was at full excursion. I did the washer trick and that worked for about two years and it started to slip again - more pad wear. There is still plenty of meat on the pads so what I did was take off the brake mechanism, take off the front caliper and drill a hole in it in the direction of the piston thrust, threaded the hole and put in a bolt with a lock nut. Now I can adjust for pad wear ! I really need new pads but Maud doesn't have pads that look like ours. One day I will get them relined at a brake shop. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437
