Thanks José, Bob & Eric, now understand how it is done, and will get the “tool” fabricated after I take the measures later this month. Have also ordered some anti-seize...

If you experience any difficulty during re-assembly just ease the tension of the outhaul line. That line, if under a great deal of tension, can cock the Anderson Winch "cap" slightly causing a small misalignment with the gearbox slotted shaft. Usually the rubber grommets that isolate the gearbox from the boom bracket allow for enough movement to allow the well lubricated outhaul shaft to be inserted very easily without having to do this. Re: Outhaul shaft removal
I would like to confirm that I believe that it is important to exert pressure only on the slotted shaft and shaft and not to apply pressure to the gearbox housing or, perhaps even more importantly, the aluminum bracket of the main boom to which the gearbox attaches. Both of those items are aluminum whereas the shaft and the slotted shaft are steel. When using any type of pusher/puller it is important that the pressure/counter-pressure be applied only to the steel parts involved and not to the seals, bearings, housings, or other parts lest those parts be damaged or distorted. For the same reason I recommend agains "hammering" with large hammers against the inner shaft as a method of removal.
I have found that with annual removal and re-greasing of the outhaul shaft, all that is required is either just pushing the shaft out by hand or at the max very light tapping with a hammer against the bolt that I thread into the threaded lower aspect of the shaft. In my opinion, re-greasing every 6 months is probably over doing it a bit (no harm but annual is adequate in my experience). All the best to all who own Amel boats. f Gary S. Re: US State taxes
Gregory Shea
John,
Just to add to Craig's comments, the Florida sales tax people are amazingly approachable and helpful. When I had businesses in Florida,
I dealt with them many times, both on the phone and in person. I could not believe that a government bureaucracy were so keen to help resolve your Sales Tax issues. But that wa a few years ago ....? I suggest you take Craig's advice.

I just did a quick scan on SC's boat tax website and see what you point out, that they don't title/register USCG documented boa. I then looked at FL and it seems they may have changed their tax laws about 2011 and would, indeed, collect tax on your boat. So our situation of no sales tax, having bought the boat in FL in 1999, may no longer be the case, as Mark suggested. My suggestion would be to call the FL Sales Tax department in Tallahassee, try to get to the manager of the boat/yacht division and discuss it with him, which is what I did. Craig, SN68

Jose Venegas <josegvenegas@...>
I agree with Eric
This is pretty much like my tool but the hole in the top is square and large while in mine is circular and of the same size as the shaft. Actually, l should have made it slightly larger than the shaft and for that reason, I had to add a washer as a spacer between the two parts of the top unit.

Re: US State taxes
Hi Mark,
The Fl tax department did not consider it a grey area and actually gave us a letter confirming we had no liability for Fl sales tax. And when we returned to the US (in Fl), again, there was no question that we had any sales tax liability whatsoever. They do not consider this "avoiding tax", which carries a, shall-we-say, shady connotation. In fact, it's just the opposite; they consider it being in full compliance with the FL tax laws. The end result was that we paid 0% sales tax on our Amel AND were in 100% compliance with all state tax laws - nothin' shady or grey or risky or dodgy or whatever. Craig

Hi Eric-
Well, there's the RIGHT WAY, the WRONG WAY, and the AMEL WAY! Regarding the Amel way, according to Albon, plan B was to remove the boom, bring it into the shop and use their press. If the press placed pressure directly on the slotted disc while pressing the shaft, pressure on the case could be avoided. It is possible that our habit of frequently spraying just a bit of CorrosionX (regular as well as CorrosionXHD) on the shaft and rinsing the gearbox area with fresh water every time we washed off the boat may have helped--again, removal with the tool was effortless. Albon suggested Tef-Gel where the metal of the gear box meets the shaft upon reassembly. Bob and Suzanne, KAIMI

Re: Turbo heat shield for Perkins M80T
JEFFREY KRAUS
Those heat shields on the Volvo cost a fortune. The shield for the d3 110 is $500 we run a dry exhaust on big diesels we have heat wrap insulation, with a fibercloth to secure it. I did my d3 110 with leftover scraps from my muffler replacement. You could get what you need to wrap the turbo for $25, and have better insulation then their overpriced wrap, and it will look good to if you cut the pieces and fit them well Sent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7.

Craig, I wonder how that would work for a vessel purchased overseas, USCG documented but never registered in a State. South Carolina does not register USCG documented vessels. Annie SM 37 is documented with Charleston SC as home port, my home and state of residence. She has however only passed thru SC during my ownership. At this writing she is berthed in Georgia where I am working but does not have to stay. I would be curious how FL would treat her for sales tax.
