It is likely that all of the problems identified are related to the cable and/or their associated connectors than to the antenna itself. The coaxial  cable runs up the inside of the mast and is subject to abrasion and aging issues. Further, there should be a cable connector at the base of the mast that connects the mast cable to the interior boat cable. This connector is necessary so that the mast can be removed without cutting the cable between the radio and antenna. Water can enter the cable thru abrasions or run down the cable in the mast and possibly corrode the terminal.    We found that we had to replace ours six years into our circumnavigation.

Please also make sure that your antenna is electrically grounded to the mast and thus the vessels ground plane system which provides the other half of the antenna system. This is different from the battery ground.

FYI, per my discussions with Olivier, the antenna cable does not have a connection at the top of the mast. The only connection between the VHF and the antenna is at the base of the mast at the ceiling level in the forward starboard cabin.  On Kokomo this connection has a heat shrink around it and when exposed looked new.

So, if you want to try and eliminate antenna/cable related problems, you could swap the AIS antenna into the VHF radio, and vice versa and see if the problem jumps to the AIS.  Its better of course that the VHF antenna is on the main mast for height, but at least this gives you a check ability.



The 54 (mine at least) has 4 identical VHF antennas, two on each mast. However, the AIS and VHF Radio are probably the two which are easiest to swap for test purposes.

Kelly and I also use Google Fi. We had the same experience. Except for a hiccup when I first activated my service (likely because I waited until I was in Bermuda to do so, instead of home), it's been great. We had flawless service in Martinique for over a month. On December 28, Kelly lost service. The following afternoon she contacted support through my phone, which still worked. The support person seemed to do something, and then mine went dead too. I'm curious to know when you lost access! We've been contacting support for many days and they refuse to tell us anything. It still works in non-French countries.

Can't speak for other parts of the world but it appears the whole google fi system hinges on the local carriers in the various countries, and the customer support person actually told me they had "no authority" to contact those carriers??!  So feels like a house of cards to me and suggest you beware.

Nowhere else in the world except Martinique have I had problems. It has been on/off. There is no alternative. All carriers rely on local towers. Martinique is the worst that I know of. If you had a local SIM, it is sometimes better because the local carrier gives preference, but I found it impossible as a non-French citizen to get. 

Can you imagine what we did and what it cost in the Caribbean before GoogleFI? And, what about everywhere else?

It is a good idea to pick up an inexpensive (~US$50) SWR/power meter to help trouble shoot radio transmitting trouble due to bad cabling and/or bad antennas.  The digital ones will confirm the radio is transmitting at proper power, and on the right frequency as well as measuring the efficiency of the antenna system.

Some AIS boxes have a built in SWR meter that you can access via the computer interface.

Hi Thomas;

 

Our issues were almost identical to yours. We had our entire cabling and antenna transmission/reception tested by three different techs at different ports. They all had the proper equipment to test cabling and antenna power transmission from the back of the VHF to the top of the antenna. All of their initial suspicion was the Antenna. However, testing would always show almost perfect transmission power. So, we always assumed an intermittent faulty connection somewhere, even though all connections looked brand new, or an intermittent fault in the Antenna since it is now 10 years old.

 

We ran into an old tech shop in Malta while hauled out. He pulled the VHF, took it to his shop and came back the next day and said that it was a filter within the radio, he had the part, replace it and it is now fixed.

 

We have not had any issues, that we know of, since. Had we not ran into the tech in Malta, our plans were to replace the antenna, then the radio followed by cabling, if necessary, to resolve the issue. It is not a good feeling to be out of cell range, without a reliable VHF.

Any other suggestions for additional troubleshooting? 

Any recommendations on how to switch to the mizzen antenna? (do you swap antennas with the AIS)

Originally on early 54s the line was 10mm kevlar core, polyester sheath.

Amel now recommends 12mm. You probably will not find kevlar. Use a core fiber that has the less stretch.

Do you know how to correctly rig the outhaul? Do you have my procedures?

We had a similar issue on our SM. Limited distances in terms of transmission (less than a mile), as well as reception. I assumed it had to be the antenna, but after much trouble-shooting, we figured out it was the radio itself (a Simrad, about 15 years old). A new radio fixed the problem.
One other place to check the antenna, however, is at the base of the main mast. I don’t know if the 54 is the same as a SM, but there is a connection there between the coax coming down the mast, and the coax coming from the VHF. Ours was somewhat corroded. However, fixing that did not help much.
We bought a Garmin 300 and have been very happy. It has an “active” speaker that goes in the cockpit (a volume knob on the speaker), so that the helmsman can hear transmissions, but those below can sleep in relative silence. There is also a remote handheld unit that pairs with the nav station VHF for use without having to go below.

We still have the original Shipmate VHF installed so not sure how much help this thought is; we experienced similar issues a couple of years ago. We noticed in the Bahamas a vessel anchored within a few yards of us hailed the Exuma Land and Sea Park about 15 miles away and got a response. When we hailed the park couldn’t hear us (boats near us could hear our transmission).

 

After going through the same process as you checking all connections etc. I eventually replaced the antenna on top of the mast. This solved our problem.

I can't say about the actual rough idle, but I ~thought~ I had a rough idle.  Turned out that the metal exhaust muffler was just touching, and therefore rattling, on the engine room floor.  A new piece of insulating pad solved that.
Second, I just had the visually 'ok' looking motor mounts on Adagio changed out in Martinique.  The mechanic threw everything ounce of his weight into the motor to check the mounts, and I was surprised how far he got the engine to wiggle.  After that, he said 'the mounts are good' so, it takes heroic effort to get the motor to move around :).
We did find one point that was weeping a tiny bit of oil, so I opted to swap them all (6).  Also changed out the donuts in the coupler and the vibration dampener on the flywheel.
The results, while I wouldn't say 'dramatic', were quite noticeable at idle and it really does run more smoothly overall now. I have to learn the new sounds :)

I do use a fuel additive to prevent bugs and indeed have never had one.  also use a 10 micron promaty filter. There are inspection ports but not very accessible. I think I'm going to wait until a haul out for this.

Thanks, that is quite reassuring. The "sludge" is very sticky - I only noticed it when I went to lift the gauge rod up and I could feel it sticking to the bottom of the tank. What I found on the end was some dark brown very sticky residue. I have never had a problem with dirty or watery fuel, so I do believe that what I am seeing is not an urgency. It doesn't strike me as a DIY job though, so as you suggest, next time we're in a reasonably up to date location, we'll call an expert.

I went in April 2018 to Galapagos. Our agent was Ricardo Arenas that has people in San Cristobal, Santa Cruz and Isabela taking care of you boat entrance.
Everything went well with the autografo that allow you to stop in these 3 islands.
You boat should be clean

When you undertake this project, the best advice I can give you is to label EVERYTHING. When it comes time to put the membranes in and put it all back together, it can get very confusing very quickly.
