Re: New Wheel Leather

We got our replacement from Amel - it even included the leather cover for the wheel hub with a gold embossed "H.Amel" signature on it that was the original design for the SN.

To confirm that the metal wheel is changed. This wheel is on S/Y Lady Annila, SM 232 built 1998.

If you obtain any of the excellent "mail order" wheel leather kits, there were three distinctly different wheels on the Super Maramu. Two are stainless steel, one is composite. Not sure when the stainless one evolved but 1998 rings a bell but don't quote me. I believe the composite wheel on the 54 was the same on all.
When I asked Jacques Carteau why the switch to composite, he said 'weight '.
He explained the inertial loads on the chain drive autopilot are greatly reduced with the lighter wheel making it last much longer. Then he showed me linear drive to the rudder quadrant. At the end that is not attached to the rudder, the drive unit is through bolted with rubber squares about 1/4" thick. You have to look hard to see them. He explained that they absorb the 'pop' when the unit changes direction, again, making it last longer.
There are so many little details that make Amel boats what they are. Many of you that I have sold a boat to are probably smiling as you recall how enthusiastic I get when showing many of these unique details to prospects for the first time.

You just need to measure your wheel as they show and order whatever colour you want.
The kit comes with everything you need and instructions to sew it on.
It is a slow job believe me, but worth it in the end.
Good luck.

Spinnaker Pole Strut Support

Roger Wilson

On my Sharki 127 I have the usual stainless tubing support for the strut for the spinnaker pole. The support has a clamp assembly (6 fasteners) on the cap shroud and hides a 120mm length of wire.  The spport crimps onto the lowers with just one fastener.
I am curious if an owner has experienced a corrosion problem on the cap shroud where it it hidden within the support clamp assembly.  This is a place to collect dirt and must be disassembled for inspection.

Subject: [AmelYachtOwners] New Wheel Leather

After several years of appearing “fashionably distressed”, our original wheel leather now just looks distressed. Does anyone have any tips for replacing this? Where might I get leather that would fit, or be fitted? Any shared experiences would be much valued.

Hi,
Yesterday I saw SY Phantom in Jabin's  Yacht Yard in Annapolis. If the owner is on this forum or if someone knows him, I would like to get in touch and discuss his experience with the watt&sea generator that the boat has installed.

Re: Poor Anchor Chain Maintenance

Duane Siegfri

James,

The galvanizer I used said they would have to sandblast if there was paint on it, and they would have an extra charge.  I would regalvanize every time if I could, I think my cost was about $250 if my memory serves.  The last treatment lasted for 3 years (where we were anchored 75% of the time), but now needs attention.

Best of luck and of course hope it’s only in the gel coat layer.
