Fuel tank shape on 55?
Billy Newport
Is the diesel tank on a 55 regular shaped or did amel use a custom sender to accurately show fuel? Water tank shape also?

Beaute Olivier
Hello Bill, I have downloaded the ZOOM app. What else do I need to do? If I want to show pictures during the meeting, how do I do that? Thanks for guiding me a bit. Olivier.

It is my great pleasure to announce that Olivier Beaute will present at our first ZOOM Meeting of 2021. It will be held on 16 January 2021 20:00 to 21:00 UTC. Details:
Many members of the Amel Yacht Owners Group trained on their new Amels with Olivier in La Rochelle. Many of us relied on Olivier as the manager of Amel SAV. And, a substantial number of our Group have used Olivier's surveys when purchasing their pre-owned Amels. As most of you know, after a long and successful career with Amel, Olivier Beaute went into the survey business and established ATLANTIC YACHT SURVEY.
The topic of Olivier's ZOOM Meeting will be "An Amel Survey." His presentation will last about 30 minutes with 30 minutes for questions. Tilo Peters will monitor, queue, and ask Olivier your texted questions.
This meeting will be very good for all of our members.
I suspect that this meeting may book to capacity and urge you to register soon.

Paul,
We've found our ebespacher quite effective in cold conditions. But what we found really useful in Scotland and the Baltic was an electric blanket. They don't use many amps, but make a significant difference climbing into bed at night or coming off watch! Ian Ocean Hobo SN9&

Re: New battery bank / one battery smoking and leaking

Ben
Don't replace the bad battery until you have found the issue. Maybe it was a bad battery or a charging issue. If the latter, you risk damaging a replacement in the same way. Prior to crossing the Atlantic my batteries were suddenly running down quickly. After separating them and testing them I found one battery was not holding a charge. I removed it from the system reducing the house bank to three. Everything was fine then; the bad battery was stopping the rest from charging fully. If your batteries are not new, don't put a new one in the system. Reduce to three. Find out whether it was a bad battery or something in your running charging circuits. If you have to keep.moving, either everything will charge up fine or another battery will go the same way. When you've identified the issue think of renewing all the house batteries. I When this happened to me I was at the same stage of the learning curve as you are now! This group has hauled my knowledge up by the bootstraps!! Ian Ocean Hobo SN96

Re: New battery bank / one battery smoking and leaking
Ben,
Some more info would help. When you say, "Basically only the alternators." - does that mean you have more than one engine alternator? When you say "I will change the battery ..." does that mean you will just take the overheating battery out of the house bank of 5, and not that you are actually "changing" it? Or are you ex-"changing" it with the starter battery? What does "regulate the charge in the coming hours" mean? Are you back to shore power and running your Victron? Does that not regulate the charge automatically (through it's 3-stage program)? Would love to help you sort this out, but your post is a little hard to respond to with the paucity of information you've given. Best, Craig - SN68 Sangaris, Tropic Isle Harbor, FL

Re: New battery bank / one battery smoking and leaking
Ahah, I’m learning the hard way the fun part of owning a boat. I heard a long time ago.... be the friend of someone who owns a boat. All it will cost you is a case of beer. Lol Yesterday I was on shore power and all seem well. Yes I was motoring for about 50 nm and realized the problem almost at destination. But it was going on for a while. Just don’t realize cause of lack of knowledge. Today was very cloudy so almost no solar power coming in. Basically only the alternators. So I will change the battery and regulate the charge in the coming hours. Thx for the help Ben

When you charge batteries you have to go through several phases (1, charge max, 2. lower amount, 3 trickle charge). If your charger/your alternator, windvane or sun panels faile to lower the charge, then you fry the batteries. -- John Bernard "JB" Duler San Francisco Meltem # 19, Western Med

New battery bank / one battery smoking and leaking
Good afternoon again Amel fellow group.
I seem to have another problem on my Amel. I realized this week that my batteries were all dead after a year due to Covid of not being able to maintain the boat properly. (Couldn’t reach the boat in another country.)
I changed all my batteries yesterday for 6 new ones. 5 are a bank and one is for the starter.
I am trying to figure out if the problem could be only that exact battery, from the fact that all others seemed ok or do I have a problem somewhere else in my set up?

can you provide a Wayfair product number or link? With the description that you mention, I can't find anything on their site that resembles what I'm looking for. Thanks a lot, Alex NO STRESS A54 #15

Re: Foredeck dinghy cradle
Bill, We do store our dingy a 10,5 feet AB, deflated on the after deck, it actually take "less space" than up side down, and it would not store very much water in the case of extremely rough weather. But it does not adress the issue with access to the emergency tiller. But the liner drive Autopilot will still be in operation.

Some Navigation parts available
Dear Forum,
After some refresh/upgrade activities for the navigation equipment I'm left with several parts that are functional however no longer needed. Before putting this stuff on e-Bay I would like to ask my fellow forum members if there is any interest in this collection. I also have the genua and staysail furlers (both working) available. Just send me a PM if you need more information. Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Re: SM Fresh water pressure tank
I bet Wayne Bell can tell you where you will find one. There are so many cisterns and wells on Antigua, you will probably have a choice of color.😀

Re: Foredeck dinghy cradle
Karen Smith
Dinghies are such personal choices. And storage of rib’s can be a real pain. Obviously from the comments so far.
We have kept our AB 9.5 foot aluminum hull rib athwartships on the aft deck. It fits, allows us access around it on both sides, and the hand rails supply convenient tie down points. There is, however, a significant safety issue with that: It renders the emergency tiller unusable. That bothers me. I wouldn’t go to sea without an emergency tiller, so how can I justify go to sea without on I can use??? It really rough conditions, I also worry about putting more load on the handrails then they were designed for. We have worked out a tie down method for the forward deck that keeps the deck clear, and doesn’t require any additional deck penetrations. When we get back to Harmonie I’ll get some photos. I have been in deck sweeping seas with a dinghy on the foredeck in my pre-Amel days. Waves serious enough they left knee deep water in a center cockpit, and broke stanchions when they hit folded down solar panels. The dinghy did fine. That experience has forever made me leery of storing things tied to stanchions. On the other hand, I have a friend who had a foredeck secured hard-hull fiberglass dinghy stove in by a boarding wave. But it didn’t go anywhere. Personally, I would never go to sea with a dinghy “right side up” on the foredeck, or anywhere else for that matter. A large wave could fill it, and the resulting weight would be a real disaster in the making in weather that rough. But that’s just me... More of our dinghy musings can be found HERE Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie The boat’s in Charleston, we are in Antigua wrapping up a delivery.

Re: SM 2000 Mizzen Spreader Deck Light
Karen Smith
We had to replace ours as well. The housing cracked and there was no way to keep the bulb in place after the old one crashed and shattered on deck. We had no luck at all finding USA distribution for that particular AquaSignal model light fixture. We managed to source the LED version of the entire fixture on eBay through a supplier in Lithuania, of all places.
I added some silicone to help secure the bulb in place. Bill Kinney SM160 Harmonie (Boat’s in Charleston, we are in Antigua wrapping up a delivery)
