You are most likely referring to Luc Brumauld des Houlières who retired from the yard in 2011, bought a second hand somewhat derelict SM and totally refurbished her. He is the one who sold me my SM (232). Even though he was a very good salesman, originally, by trade, he was a mechanical assembler and his two hobbies were building timepieces and collecting Porsche. I should not speak of him in the past as he is still very much alive. If anyone comes across him please give him my regards.

I just heard back from Jean who’s own SM2K Too Much and met the owner of that “Super Maramu 2000 S”.
So the owner’s name is Luc and he apparently work 20 years for Amel..
Somehow his SM2K went back to Amel and had a ceiling of the style of the 54…
I think the owner took on himself to add the S, definitely not an Amel name !

Last month my wife and I were anchored

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Alwgrip

Patrick McAneny

Paul, I just responded to your email to me , but in that I did not comment on Alwgrip or my opinion of it, so... One downside is that after we painted our boat , it looked like it just came out of the factory , maybe even more shine , and then just like with a new car , you worry about scratches . It makes it very easy to clean , the paint does not hold the dirt and stains like gel coat. After ten years the white is losing some shine and the rep told me that now it would be OK to wax the hull , they recommend that you do not wax Alwgrip , at least for many years and there is really no need to. Georgetown has painted many large boats over the years , so they do have the experience and Nick would probably be doing the job.

Re: Alwgrip

Duane Siegfri

Paul,

This is just my two cents from observation and owning a sailboat for 20 years.

Paint looks great.  If your gelcoat has had it and will no longer polish to your satisfaction, paint is the only economical recourse.

The problem with paint is that it is much thinner and more easily injured than gelcoat.  You will need to be very careful with fenders and docking in general.  I personally would not buy a fiberglass sailboat that had been painted.  The life of a paint job is a question you might ponder.  I've heard ten years, but it may be less depending on the quality of preparation.

Still, many custom boats, and steel boats are painted and they do well.  Just be careful with abrasion.

Re: new Genoa

Craig & Katherine Briggs SN 68 Sangaris Tropic Isle Harbor, FL

Ian, et al,
We replaced with a 150%, not a 140% - straight cut Dacron by UK sails.  A fat furling pad in the luff helps a bit with shape when it's furled.
Given that "percent" (150, 140, 135 etc.) is the perpendicular distance from the sail's luff to its clew (LP) as a percent of the "J" measurement from the head-stay attachment point at the deck to the front of the mast, one wants to consider how the sail will set when poled out. 150% is the design length of our downwind poles. Thus a poled out 150% jib will sheet in snug to the pole end and be stabilized there. A smaller sail will obviously not sheet fully in to the pole and the rig is not designed to let the pole go forward, which would put an out of line force on the mast.
The sail maker will, therefore, need to consider that the smaller sail will be tacked to a point intended for a 150% sail and consider pole end height and outboard distance to get a proper lead to the smaller sail and, even then, there will be a length of sheet between the pole end and the clew and a peculiar and unstabilized lead to the sail. Methinks the Captain designed for a 150 genoa (even upwind). Notwithstanding, it's probably a minor sub-optimization in our cruising world.
And, Ian, please ... I'm still trying to embrace "Santorin GT - Sangaris"
Cheers, Craig

Not much downwind in Caribbean so size us better as is shape when reefed. You could keep your old 150% for long downwind as the shape doesn’t matter then. We didn’t because we didn’t have storage space.
So far no regrets.

Do you know the foot length of your Genoas?
Original Amel foot is 8,25 m giving an area of 67 sqm. With a J of 5,0 meters I get it to 165%, but I might be wrong in how to calculate the %.
with my way to calculate the foot of your Genoas would be 5,5 m and 6,75 m looks  small, am I correct?
Would guess a 50 sqm Genoa would be a good alternative for the Caribbean.

For the Caribbean in winter, I love my 110.  The 135 is a good compromise if you're only going to use one genoa, but the 110 and 150 seem like a great combination.  If I get a 150 for the S Pacific, I'll build it a little lighter than my current 135.

I find the double headsail rig is awesome downwind and don't see any need for a gennaker or spinnaker.

I'm storing my artimon, extra Genoa, and second headsail in the aft lazarette now, but may move them to a bow locker.
