Leroy Sommer parts

I would like to order some replacement parts for my Leroy Sommer gearboxes and I can not locate a source in the US. Can someone point me in their direction? If I need to order from another country that is OK too. Thanks, Bob Hodgins Gallivant Amel 54 #31 currently in Raiatea, French Polynesia

Hi Bill, what was the total amp load.I wince when I read of the load some people put on the system. If it was high and something more started up it could have been a simple over load. Other than that it could be a failure in the hot water element if that was turned on. Couple of simple possibilities. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Unknown spare parts [1 Attachment]

Hi Paul, The foam seals go on the bow thruster shaft above the propeller gearbox and are designed to compress between it and the top of the recess when the thruster is raised preventing water surge forcing water into the hull when under way. There is considerable pressure created as the boat punches into waves. There is a lip seal inside the boat on top of the housing but without the foam seals stopping that surge it would fail early. The foam seals should be changed at the biannual haulout as should the oil in the thruster and the lip seal on the bow thruster propeller shaft. A lot of SM have water leaks here but with proper adjustment of the lift mechanism to get the right pressure on the foam seals and regular replacement of the upper lip seal there will be no problem. Kind Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: Run rail maintenance

I really don't like the Amel rub rail (one of my few complaints), and rubbing on a pile and you've damaged the gel coat. The vinyl rubrail is ordered to length so there are no splices and it also has end sections. The track comes in 6.5foot sections. If you want to look it up it's Item T130-141-006-2 (Rigid Track) and T130-141-007-W I've seen several SM's with a stainless bead screwed to the Amel rub rail, but I don't like the look. Has anyone done something else to protect the gel coated "rub rail"? The other way of handling the dings I suppose is to just paint every few years. The white stripe is just auto detail tape according to the fiberglass guy who did some repair work for us. Duane Wanderer, SM#477

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Onan Water Pump
Mark, That is an Onan water flow sensor. It was added to the Onan probably after your hull number...probably around hull #300. Of course the control PCB is different also to handle additional sensors etc. Interestingly, Onan later dropped the water flow sensor. I assume it was redundant because of coolant temperature switch/sensor and exhaust elbow temperature switch/sensor. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Onan parts in Martinique
Alex,
Looking forward to seeing you again.
The mooring situation is really hit and miss. If you arrive early in the day you may have a chance of snagging one. Moorings are full today with two boats in the marina waiting.
Best advice is to plan to hang in the marina for a few days. If you get a buoy, great. If not, you can still enjoy Bonaire until a buoy opens. Morning is the best time to check for open buoys by dink or call other boats on VHF 77. The moorings are first come first serve, no reservations, stay on it for as long as you want (dependent on your visa). If you are docked in the marina and are using your dink to check for a mooring, have something such as a fender or life-jacket to tie to it until you can get the mother-ship over. Alert the neighboring boats that you are claiming it. Else, there is a chance it'll be gone before you get back.
No need for a reservation at the marina. There are plenty of slips open and there is also a long side-tie dock with space. If you arrive at night or on a Sunday, there will not be staff to help. Best to tie at the side-tie pier until business hours. The marina monitors VHF 17. Carlos is the manager and speaks English.
To check in with customs and immigration you can either walk or take the dinghy to their dock. The walk is 25 mins or 2 km from the marina. The building is located here: 12°08'57.6"N 68°16'37.0"W (paste this into google maps) - It is possible to tie the dink at their dock on the south side of the North pier (if no cruise ships are in). You will see two big tugs and a couple of customs boats. Tie next to the customs boats at the area not reserved for customs. There is a guard at the gate and you tell him you are going to the customs office.
Hope you have a great sail here. Cream Puff is in the marina on B dock. We will be here for a couple of months. Look forward to meeting you when you arrive :)
If you have other questions, we're glad to help.
With best regards,
Mark

Re: Unknown spare parts
The foam seal should be for the bowthruster.
The other part should be for the sailbattens The seal for the mainsailmotor is much smaller. When I asked Amel in Hyeres about this motor, they told me, that today the motor has a little hole on the bottom to let the water run out and if you look at the new Amel 50 they made a protecting Cover for the motor. I grease around the Top and will protect the part with tape for the Winter. Wolfgang Weber SY Elise Amel 54#162

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Servicing the GROHE thermostatic shower mixer [5 Attachments]
Mark,
The timing of this post is very good. I noticed I now have a small leak on the aft shower unit. It only leaks when, it is being adjusted but I figured this is the beginning.
The part that you mention, is this for the temperature end or the flow end?

[Attachment(s) from mfmcgovern@... [amelyachtowners] included below] The aft shower unit in my SM had developed a small leak. I found this thread when researching how to open it up. However, the Grohe shower unit in my SM is a little different from the one in the link that Alan posted. Mine does not have a screw holding the ON/OFF cap in place. It is just pressed on so I had to use a screwdriver to gently pry it off. Upon disassembly I found that the ON/OFF cartridge had cracked. There were some numbers engraved on the cracked cartridge but none of them appeared to be the part number. I used Google images to find the closest visual match. I got lucky and guessed right. The part number for the ON/OFF cartridge for my Grohe shower unit is 45882000. I found them on Amazon for about $20 but they also have them at Home Depot for the same price: https://www.homedepot.com/p/GROHE-Ceramic-Headpart-45882000/204193498.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Unknown spare parts [1 Attachment]
Paul, That might be the rubber seal that goes on the top of your main furling motor. That is, if you have the 54 vertically mounted main furling motor, which with hull #98, I suspect you have this seal. Early model 54s had a horizontal main furling motor. BTW, when these seals leak, the incoming water will ruin the motor. The rubber seals probably have a life of 2-4 years. That life can be prolonged with a coating of Trident brand Silicone Grease (I don't recommend a substitute for the Trident brand...you can find it in dive shops. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Strange Steering/tracking problem
Davi, I believe Mark's suspicions are probably correct. Something happened to the MaxProp when cleaning, or the MaxProp is in need of service. I believe if the MaxProp is not working/feathering correctly, it might create a water vortex which would feel like slight weather helm, or it might create a kind of "prop-wash" causing the boat to slightly track sideways. Everything points to the prop. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Strange Steering/tracking problem

Davi, How about getting the boat up to speed and going into neutral to see if the helm straightens out? This will eliminate the possibility that the prop is the cause. If you still have a turn in the boat, I think I would have a good look at the rudder for any asymmetries. Best of luck, James SV Sueño, Maramu #220
