Eric,

The plugs have the  following dimensions:
Big OD 17 mm,
Small OD 13 mm,
Length 25 mm
Cut it to 6 or 6.5 mm length.
I thoroughly cleaned the cavities, applied grease on the screw head, and then plugged it. It works good. 

I don't have PN now. I will try to get PN when I have good WiFi connection. I am in D'Arlet, Martinique now.

Jeff, FYI, The 53 and 54 bow thrusters are entirely different . You are correct that the 54 incorporates a thermal limiter to keep it from going Chernobyl when overused. The 53 has no thermal or overcurrent protection of any kind. When I queried about the reason for this from the guy who designed it, Jacques Carteau , he said that in dire/extreme situations, he thought it was better to lose the bow thruster to overuse than to lose the boat, or severely damage it, due to the bow thruster taking a time out. Personally I prefer Carteaus method. All that said, the bow thruster on your boat was never abused when I owned it but I had to have the motor rebuilt right before I sold it to you as the brushes and the commutator didn’t play nice with each other. It worked fine until the moment it would not work at all. I’m glad I always test for forward and reverse and bow thruster both ways before the docklines come off. The day it failed was very windy and not with any options  to avoid catastrophe if I had cast off. You might not have wanted to buy what was left!

Hi Paul, if the super maramus  thruster motors are made by sliepner, and they are a side power, as on the 54, there is a built in overheat switch. The switch itself will go (ask me how I know) and the unit will not function. Otherwise it will stop the unit from working until the motor cools again. Thanks, I'll look for a paint that works on both materials.

I don't really like the idea of a skirt for aesthetic and practical reasons.  I feel like it would have a hard time covering the whole thing and also not being slippery if you stepped on it.  Maybe my intuition is wrong; I'd love to see photos of such a skirt installed.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the specs are for the 24v motor that drives the Bamar MEJ1 furlers.  I want to buy a spare motor but the UK agent charges £766 inc VAT for it. This strikes me as excessively expensive. I bet that the motor itself would be available direct from its manufacturer for a fraction of that price. For example last year I bought two spare toothed belts for the Bamar, they cost me £49 each. Since then I have managed to source them direct for £6 each, simply by using the code stamped on the belt. Exactly the same belt, same quality, same size etc.

I was actually thinking I’d mount the reverse osmosis unit on the fibreglass tray behind the toilet but you have made me think that I could instead extend the shelves above the tray an place the unit in there

I suspect the lower the unit the better as the pump will have less work to do but perhaps the shelf would be a good option

If you decide to place the unit outboard of the aft toilet, you can make more space by moving the shelf facing panel inboard such that it sits on the fiberglass base behind the toliet. We did this in both the forward and aft heads, extending the shelves about four inches, giving us quite a bit of more storage space with no interference with the toilet.

I used a water-based rubber paint formulation that was recommended both hypalon and PVC. It works well. In general, PVC is the more difficult material to get something to stick to because the plasticizers that are used to make it flexible tend to coat the surface with an "oily" layer.

The bumper appears to be a polyurethane foam.

Hi Paul,

If it was oil and water then it would have been the lip seal on the thruster prop shaft.

 

If it is 100% oil, then my guess is that you added more than .3 liters of oil to the thruster, or you did not drain it completely.

I had some liquid grease drip down the bow thruster towards the shaft lip seal. My thruster started making a grinding noise.

I found that the lower bearing of the motor had come apart and the grease had liquefied,

I had the motor overhauled with a new bearing and all is well, The motor was also very hot with the bad bearing.

In Nydri just south Levkas in the strait (Tranquil bay)  leading in to the almost landlocked  You find a man who in his workshop do repair at very reasonable cost most alternators. I do not remember his name, but you can ask in any chandlery there and they can direct you to him. He made an overhaul on our alternator changed bearings all for 70 euro if I remember right.

   Dave Wallace, SV Air Ops is who needed information about the stuffing box packing.   I told him that 5/16” fits the packing gland on Maramu #220.  Is the packing on your boat also 5/16"?

   No need to remove your oil pressure sensor, but thank you for that offer.  I hope that you were able to purchase the used 4.154 and that you can put together a reliable engine.

  Thanks for the information on the 4.154 sender and especially for confirming the NPT threads.  I will just add a few adaptors to my install kit and should be all set.   I have ordered from Parts4engines.com and have been very happy with what I received and the quick response time.

  I repacked Sueño’s stuffing box last summer and the 5/16” was the correct size.  I think that the packing size is normally determined by the shaft diameter so I assume that yours should take the same size too.

Hi Paul. If the bow thruster lube oil has some water in it, and it almost always does, it tends to ‘froth’ if the thruster is used real hard. Unless the coatings on the motor are cracked and peeling, you probably didn’t toast anything. A service and seal change might not be a bad idea and I would do it if you have the ‘change in the water tool’. Pretty sure you could get one from Amel in Martinique; much cheaper than a haul out.

Good day to all,

Yesterday we had to dock the boat in very windy conditions and the bow thruster got way more use than I have ever subjected it to before.  When I went below, I smelled a slight burning smell and immediately went forward.  The thruster was hot, very hot, but fortunately not burning.

After it cooled, I smelled gear oil and when I removed the face panel and took a thorough look, there was a small amount of gear lube dripping down the shaft and a small puddle of lube in the bow thruster locker floor - approximately 50 mls.

I have always tried to make sure I didn’t keep the thruster on for more than 10 or 15 seconds, but I guess yesterday I didn’t pause long enough between use.  The thruster appears to be working just fine, but the oil confuses me.  Did we overfill the unit when we serviced it last October, or did the unit get so hot that some boiled out?  

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Should I be concerned about the abuse I subjected the thruster to yesterday, or like most things on these boats was the unit over engineered to handle such abuse?

Should I just add another 50 mls of lube and monitor it, or should I drop the unit for further inspection?
