Hydra 2000 internal batteries

I just found out that the Hydra 2000 has two internal batteries in the Hydra Processor, probably connected to the PCB (printed circuit board).  I've seen this on NKE equipment before.  The processor stores calibration data that the user inputs or that it calculates and the way Hydra maintains that data is to connect batteries to maintain the (EPROM ??) memory.


So, if you have a problem with the Hydra "forgetting" your calibration data, it's probably the internal batteries.  The NKE had a calculator type battery soldered into the PCB (the pancake shaped one).  I'm going to have a local electronics shop take a look at it.

Zeus 3 and Tablet

I'm working on a new electronics suite for Wanderer and I'm wondering how good the connection between a Zeus 3 at the helm and a tablet below would be.  


I would like to be able to keep watch on nearby boats while at anchor during a storm with a tablet below showing radar, AIS, and the chart sent via WIFI from the helm chartplotter.  If that isn't possible I'll buy another chartplotter for the nav station, but that seems a pricey way to go.

Hi Gang, We modified our bed in the aft cabin and it is a successful change.  We started by removing the single bed from the stbd side and replaced it with extra cabinets.  This is very good.

Then we widened the base of the bed and reduced the width of the aisle.  Bed is still 190 CMS long but 165 CM at the head and 140 at the foot.

I can provide photos if needed.

It was a costly mod and not very well done by the "turkeys in Turkey"; you know the ones I’m talking about.  But after a good carpenter fixed the issues, it is a lovely place to sleep and retains the lee boards etc.

Hello Alex,

your rudder is supported by a pintle bearing, a piece made of stainless steel where the bottom of the rudder shaft sits.
This part is bolted into the base of the skeg. You will find the bolts if you sand off the GRP that covers these bolts.
You will also need to remove the U-shaped stainless steel part that bears a nylon bushing, at mid-height. This part is also bolted into the skeg. Sand off and you'll find the bolts.
Then, in aft cabin, you need to remove the steering cables quadrant from the rudder shaft top, and open the nylon nut stuffing box.

What is the reason why you want to remove the rudder blade?

I have removed the old rubrail from our boat. It is on the hard now, getting some serious done work on the hull and the keel.

The rubrail was in place with one inch aluminum nails. I am replacing the whole thing with an Amel supplied spare. Has anyone done this? Can one use a nail gun to put in the new nails?

Any suggestions?

Well that was my concern.  It looks good on the new modern boats but is it practical if you are going to sail it.   Be nice to still be able to wedge against the bulkhead when its rough.

How to repair holes left by old electronics at nav station

I have a Furuno GP7000 at the nav station that I'm going to replace with an ICOM M506-21 VHF radio (also has AIS RX and is N2K compliant).  This seemed like a good choice since it will be an AIS backup and includes the ability to add a remote handset, and has the PA/Foghorn features.


The Furuno has a face dimension of about 12" x 6" and the M506 has a faceplate of 7" x 4.5" so I need to cover the old cutout.  


I'm thinking of dark plexiglass, but that tends to become less attractive over time as it dulls.  I don't think I would like bare aluminum, although I could paint the aluminum black...


Any other ideas out there?

Even thought I said I would wait the insurance issue to be solved to post the entire story, I have to post what is going on now and again URGE ALL OF YOU to reread their insurance policies.

January 5, my insurance sent me a letter saying I was late to pay the insurance premium (due by November 2017).
Prior the January 5 letter I never received any letter, email, etc. asking to renew the insurance which seems logical since NIKIMAT sunk September 6 and was declared soon after a total loss by the insurance…

Despite a letter from my lawyer, the insurance just sent me another letter yesterday threatening to “sue” me because I still haven’t paid the premium.

They insist I still owe the premium and sent me the articles they are basing themselves (that is in French).

I suspect they refer to article 8.4.4
“en cas de perte totale, vol totale et délaissement de votre bateau assure”.
(in short: in case of total loss so my case)
THEN it says:
“L’assurance prend fin de plein droit le jour ou l’indemnite correspondante vous sera réglée”.
(in short it says the insurance will stop the day I will be reimbursed for the boat).
So in other words, as long as the insurance is not settled, I still owe the insurance ?!? Seriously? Crazy.

Since they are offering 75% of the agreed value and my lawyer is suing them to collect the full amount and the insurance wait each time “1 month” to reply a message (just like they did to me in Nassau) this can take several months possibly years (since I am still not fully reimburse from the accident in Nassau over 3 years ago).

For information, my lawyer told me NOT TO PAY that premium.

Bandits, crooks, dishonest, gangsters, etc. are the words that come to my head now.
