Re: Bow Thruster Linear Actuator - Update on availability

Duane Siegfri

I took the bow thruster actuator motor apart and found a lot of corrosion inside.  The aluminum flange of the cap had missing bits like a rat had chewed on it, but of course it was corrosion.  The spacer plates on the wound armature were also somewhat corroded.  I had a motor shop check it and they said it is repairable.

The jack screw still worked very easily with just my fingers on the end nut below the gearbox.

This is the SNT ACLE 105 Actuator.  Maud has a few in stock and is sending me one for about $1,800.  The Company finally replied to my emails and you can buy one from them as well for about 1,085 Euros, but too late for me I had already ordered it from Maud.  At least this way I'm relatively sure it has the same fittings, switches, etc.

They are still in production, f you wanted to buy a spare, the company contact information is below.  Be sure to check which actuator you have of course.

Good morning Peter,

Can’t advise on who to use, but definitely recommend NOT TO USE companies through De Lassee, especially Helvetia.
If you need more details on why, I will be glad to explain.

For the record, I was going to switch to Y Insurance.

In any event, make sure to read your entire policy, do not assume anything and reasonable or not, follow the insurance policy.

Sincerely, Alexandre

I was also looking for a circulation pump for the fridges. I bought a "europump" which is rated on the label to draw 1amp, but actually was drawing 2.5-3 amps and blew the fuse up. I changed the fuse to 3 amps, but then the regulator did not work and had all the lights blinking.
So, I ordered from the clima distributor the original frigoboat pump. Instead I got a "flojet" pump. I installed it and it worked!

We have used Y Yacht insurance in UK. Well worth asking for a quote. Their cover is good, and the price is great.
I ‘lost’ my dinghy and engine a few weeks back in Guadeloupe, they dealt with it quickly and I got my insured money back within 2 weeks - well before the cost of the replacement has come off my credit card! It hasn’t affected my renewal quote which is £790 sailing back to UK in June and keeping boat in Europe for the year. If I’d stayed in the Caribbean it would have been £1100. That’s for a Santorin including dinghy, engine etc.
Their response time and support are first rate.

I'm gonna stick this out there .. when we were in Martinique we had a nice discussion with our neighbor boat and also with the tech (Jean?) at Amel about this track/car issue. I looked at a boat that had indeed augered off the forward end of the retaining rails and it worked for him. The Amel guy said it was possible to loosen the stanchion at the forward end of the track and bend it out of the way without any undue stress on the lifeline railing.
I did not try this, and don't know if it's viable (I managed a solution in situation). but it seemed to make sense to me.

Hi Teun

I'm writhing OFF THE GROUP.[Teun BAAS]  Sure – no problem.

What happens with your D3-110?[Teun BAAS]  When I came on board the next day when trying to start I had an electrical fire; most likely, according to 2 VOLVO mechanics, a wire chafed against the engine somewhere causing it to short.   It was not an old Engine; I guess 2009.[Teun BAAS]  Correct – only 3200 hrs. Problem is that VOLVO doesn’t have good diagnostic tools for the early generations D3 110. This means they follow the “next step” approach. Check this – if it doesn’t work then replace this/these part(s), still not working then replace the next part(s) in the chain and so on. So we spent close to USD15K on parts and labor and still it was NOT running and we had to order about USD13K on injectors, sensors etc. etc. plus labor and then still no assurance it would run. Next step thereafter would have been the 2 VOLVO computers.  So I decided to replace the engine.

Are you installing a brand new Volvo? [Teun BAAS]  Yes Same model?[Teun BAAS]  D3 110 H ; I had the D3 110 C  But that means it is NOW all electronic controls so we have to convert the ZF gear box so I used this window to have the gear box overhauled. Also the new engine was stock in SYDNEY but didn’t have the bracket for the 2nd alternator (24V) so that had to be ordered in BELGIUM and pully etc. from SWEDEN. This new version is laid out differently so we had to grind down 2 section of the AMEL engine mounting bracket in the engine room; apparently the new engine has a completely different fuel system resulting in more quiet running. More fuel efficient. I had the choice between 150HP or 110HP; I decided to stay with the 110HP.  All these engines, although they say VOLVO are basically AUDI/VW engines converted by VOLVO.

Excuse if I'm too curious.[Teun BAAS]  No problem – ask what you want to know.

Best regards

Ruedi

Hi all

I recently changes Racor fuel filter, which usually are 10-micron. Amel does recommend for the Racor Filter to use 10-micron as well.

I found spare parts from former owner; - same but 2-micron filters for Racor.

Question:

Does anyone ever used 2-micron (or  5-micron) instead of the 10-micron?

If yes, how it worked?

I can imagine that the 2-micron filters are too narrow and fuel flow will be affected.
