Thanks David, that’s a shame however I bought a MHU only 5months old , hope you can find a buyer soon.

Am just debating with myself whether or not to remove it for the Hurricane duration once we haul this coming Tuesday in Jolly H,

Talking about missed messages, did you pick up on Mark who is re manufacturing the bow thruster electronic box. No box equals no bow thruster, simples!!!

Kent,

See if you can find group 31 EV batteries. They are made for electric vehicles and golf carts.

They are also Deep Cycle.  My battery fellow told me that there are only 7 battery manufacturers in the USA. Many companies such as his have the batteries made and have his brand name put on the batteries.

I use these for the house bank and a starting battery for my engine and genset.

Hi Amel Cousins,
I know this has been discussed before, but I’m not having any luck searching the site.

I want to replace my current 8 group 27 hybrid batteries (between cranking and deep cycle characteristics) with deep cycle higher AHr batteries. They are only 90 AHr for a total of 360AHr at 24v.I’ve found Crown 130A hrs group 31’s. My battery compartment (very early SM2K) will only hold 8 group 31’s + 1 cranking battery. That would give me a total of 520 A hrs. Does anyone have experience with these?

I know others have used 6v deep cycle batteries. How many can you fit in your battery compartment? Total A-Hrs? Do you have pics of the installation?

I want to stay with lead acid wet cells on the advice of others who say finding AGMs or GelCells may be difficult in remote places (heading for the S Pacific next Spring).

Any/all advice or experience greatly appreciated.

Re: SM Batteries

Hi Kent,

We have the bigger battery compartment with 12 x 6V 220Ah AGM batteries with a battery balancing system on each bank to ensure even charging.
I chose AGM because:
No acid spills/fumes
No maintenance (topping up)
High charge acceptance rate
Low self discharge rate
Previous good experience
We have a 12v 105Ah AGM as a start battery as well.

We cruise in the South Pacific...I wouldn't use that as a basis for choosing what type of battery to have. If you need a new battery of any sort you are unlikely to find the exact same model that you have...even in New Zealand where you can get almost everything. And if your batteries start to fail, the whole lot should be replaced.

My twopenny worth

The have eight Deka group 31 lead acid for my house batteries and am very satisfied. Regular maintenance (voltage and CCA monitoring, adding water) and effective charging are of course key.

Oliver,

I wanted to let you know that you also helped me with this same question.   I will be ordering a set of these rubber mounts from Amel shortly for my boat as well.  Your participation and help is always appreciated.

I would very much like to coordinate a time for you to go through my boat with me before Sueño departs the Mediterranean perhaps in 2020.  I will be in touch later  to see what would best for you.

Hello Dennis,

you don't need to lift the engine in order to take a picture.
Your engine mounts (if still original) are designed by AMEL and look like the attached picture.
You will need from AMEL, for each mount assembly, 5 small rubber mounts with screw and one big rubber mount with screw on top and nut at bottom.
Ask me if this is not clear.

Bon courage.

We replaced the sonic speed with B&G DST traducer – depth, speed & temperature.  This uses the same through-hull as the depth, but with the disadvantage of a paddle wheel.

The Amel guy said it was possible to loosen the stanchion at the forward end of the track and bend it out of the way without any undue stress on the lifeline railing.
I did not try this, and don't know if it's viable (I managed a solution in situation). but it seemed to make sense to me.

No, I wasn’t trying to catch you in an error, Bill.  That would’ve a futile exercise.
I have replaced one of my saloon coolers with a new Frigoboat unit that has different CPU and remote display/control panel, and now have different parts to consider carrying when sailing to the SPac.

Any suggestions about the best way to minimize spare parts list for these?  Would this new 12/24v unit help?  It looks like it’s just for boats with water-cooled compressors.

Ahhh, trying to catch me in a mistake? I do make them, but not this time!

The Amel 54 has a distribution relay/power converter (Frigoboat E51385) that allows the connection of either 12VDC or 24VDC pumps. The issue is that this relay is connected to 12VDC output terminals on the Danfoss compressor controller. Output Terminals on The Danfoss are marked “+” and “F.” These terminals will will always be 12VDC, even if power supplied to compressors is 24V. Frigoboat states that either a 12VDC or 24VDC pump can be used.

BTW, E51385 has been replaced by a simple relay(s). See following:

Dennis, You should be able to take pretty good side view pictures , which may be good enough. Since its a four cylinder Perkins , the mount may be similar to the ones on the Volvo/Perkins used on the SMs . Why don't you post a pic and we can see if it looks similar.

Re: Bow Thruster Linear Actuator - Update on availability

Duane Siegfri

I took the bow thruster actuator motor apart and found a lot of corrosion inside.  The aluminum flange of the cap had missing bits like a rat had chewed on it, but of course it was corrosion.  The spacer plates on the wound armature were also somewhat corroded.  I had a motor shop check it and they said it is repairable.

The jack screw still worked very easily with just my fingers on the end nut below the gearbox.

This is the SNT ACLE 105 Actuator.  Maud has a few in stock and is sending me one for about $1,800.  The Company finally replied to my emails and you can buy one from them as well for about 1,085 Euros, but too late for me I had already ordered it from Maud.  At least this way I'm relatively sure it has the same fittings, switches, etc.

They are still in production, f you wanted to buy a spare, the company contact information is below.  Be sure to check which actuator you have of course.
