Re: New battery bank / one battery smoking and leaking
I am sorry to hear that. Were you motoring or sailing? If you were motoring, have you checked your regulator on the alternator? Maybe you were overcharging?
When you charge batteries you have to go through several phases (1, charge max, 2. lower amount, 3 trickle charge). If your charger/your alternator, windvane or sun panels faile to lower the charge, then you fry the batteries. -- John Bernard "JB" Duler San Francisco Meltem # 19, Western Med

New battery bank / one battery smoking and leaking
Good afternoon again Amel fellow group.
I seem to have another problem on my Amel. I realized this week that my batteries were all dead after a year due to Covid of not being able to maintain the boat properly. (Couldn’t reach the boat in another country.)
I changed all my batteries yesterday for 6 new ones. 5 are a bank and one is for the starter.
I am trying to figure out if the problem could be only that exact battery, from the fact that all others seemed ok or do I have a problem somewhere else in my set up?

Re: A54 Nav station seat replacement
Jamie,
can you provide a Wayfair product number or link? With the description that you mention, I can't find anything on their site that resembles what I'm looking for. Thanks a lot, Alex NO STRESS A54 #15

Re: Foredeck dinghy cradle
Bill, We do store our dingy a 10,5 feet AB, deflated on the after deck, it actually take "less space" than up side down, and it would not store very much water in the case of extremely rough weather. But it does not adress the issue with access to the emergency tiller. But the liner drive Autopilot will still be in operation.

Some Navigation parts available
Dear Forum,
After some refresh/upgrade activities for the navigation equipment I'm left with several parts that are functional however no longer needed. Before putting this stuff on e-Bay I would like to ask my fellow forum members if there is any interest in this collection. I also have the genua and staysail furlers (both working) available. Just send me a PM if you need more information. Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Re: SM Fresh water pressure tank
I bet Wayne Bell can tell you where you will find one. There are so many cisterns and wells on Antigua, you will probably have a choice of color.😀

Re: Foredeck dinghy cradle

Dinghies are such personal choices. And storage of rib’s can be a real pain. Obviously from the comments so far.
We have kept our AB 9.5 foot aluminum hull rib athwartships on the aft deck. It fits, allows us access around it on both sides, and the hand rails supply convenient tie down points. There is, however, a significant safety issue with that: It renders the emergency tiller unusable. That bothers me. I wouldn’t go to sea without an emergency tiller, so how can I justify go to sea without on I can use??? It really rough conditions, I also worry about putting more load on the handrails then they were designed for. We have worked out a tie down method for the forward deck that keeps the deck clear, and doesn’t require any additional deck penetrations. When we get back to Harmonie I’ll get some photos. I have been in deck sweeping seas with a dinghy on the foredeck in my pre-Amel days. Waves serious enough they left knee deep water in a center cockpit, and broke stanchions when they hit folded down solar panels. The dinghy did fine. That experience has forever made me leery of storing things tied to stanchions. On the other hand, I have a friend who had a foredeck secured hard-hull fiberglass dinghy stove in by a boarding wave. But it didn’t go anywhere. Personally, I would never go to sea with a dinghy “right side up” on the foredeck, or anywhere else for that matter. A large wave could fill it, and the resulting weight would be a real disaster in the making in weather that rough. But that’s just me... Re: SM 2000 Mizzen Spreader Deck Light
Karen Smith
We had to replace ours as well. The housing cracked and there was no way to keep the bulb in place after the old one crashed and shattered on deck. We had no luck at all finding USA distribution for that particular AquaSignal model light fixture. We managed to source the LED version of the entire fixture on eBay through a supplier in Lithuania, of all places.
I added some silicone to help secure the bulb in place. Bill Kinney SM160 Harmonie (Boat’s in Charleston, we are in Antigua wrapping up a delivery)

We have German Infranomic infrared mirrors in both of our heads (replacing the mirrors over the sink) and they are outstanding. Instant heat, no moving parts, won't wear out, and large high quality mirror. I am away from KAIMI but I think they were 700 watt. When we wintered in Rome (non-metered electricity) we had them on full-time whenever we were in the boat. https://www.infranomic.de/infrarot-heizung/frame-line/

Re: Heater
True, and doable, but be careful. Reversing valves are very sensitive to the heat of soldering/brazing. If done by someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing, the reversing valve will be ruined.

Re: Heater
Paul,
Can't give you specifics for a retrofit, but it just takes a reversing valve on your A/C to make heat (maybe some control stuff, too) - about a $150 option when first installed. Maybe reasonable as a retrofit. Craig - SN68 Sangaris, Tropic Isle Harbor, FL

We spent a few seasons in southern Tasmania. Around 43deg south. We have the amel installed diesel heater. Running the heater in the morning for a few hours then again in the evening. Overnight temperature 2 to 6 C. We managed in these conditions. The best thing we have Running is a large dehumidifier this makes the air much dryer and gives a warning effect. Otherwise you may have condensation on the inside surface areas. Enjoy your cruise Michael Nebo sm251

Re: Heater
He Paul
Maybe you think abaut a infrarothheater der the carpets in the drawing room and in the cabins 24 V or maybe in 230 v's, maybe in the area of a card table or a kitchen or a ceiling in the drawing room The infrared zoning is more effective than air heating on air conditioning, and you need electricity for both Greetings Elja SM Balu 222 Von meinem iPhone gesendet

Re: Heater installed by factory Amel 54
Hi Jeff,

I have a 54 with Webasto forced air heating system fitted by Amel in the factory from new. The unit itself is located high up in the port cockpit locker with the exhaust straight out the port topside. The air intake is in the mizzen sheet/halyard cubby hole. The system works well, and I make a point to run it every now and then even in the summer. Nick S/Y Amelia AML 54-019 Leros Greece.

Hi Jeff I'm not on the boat until Saturday so the only question I can answer now is that it is an air unit. I'll try and get you the other answers this weekend.

I'm gathering information before installing a hyronic diesel heating system aboard my 54. There are a couple questions regarding the installation on the 54s If the install was a FACTORY (Amel) install: 1. Where did they vent the exhaust? 2. Was it an Espar heater? 3. Is it an air unit? 4. Did they mount the heater in the port locker or the ER? If it was an installation that was done aboard but after purchase, and not by Amel: 1. Where did they vent the exhaust? 2. Espar or Webasto unit? 3. Air or Hydronic? 4. Heater mounted in Port Locker or ER? 5. If it's an Espar, and it's a hydronic, are your heating elements fan units, or straight radiator elements inside the boat? Any feedback is appreciated. Courtney (s/v Trippen): I'll get the fuel bladder pictures up soon. Sorry for the delay. Best Regards to All, Jeff s/v Spirit Amel 54 #14 Shinnecock, NY

Re: SM Fresh water pressure tank
You have 2 accumulator tanks in the freshwater system. One at the freshwater pump, and one behind the generator.
