Hi Kent, I already have that, but I am looking for a more in depth analysis. I have been through the stream over 40 times and there always seems to be some odd currents quite south of the stream. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Hi Eric. You can get a good idea of where the stream is and eddies are on passageweather.com. If you pay for the PredictWind package that includes current data you should get a more complete complete picture (I haven’t personally tried it).

You might consider locating the nuts precisely and using a hole saw with the centering drill bit removed. This gives you access and leaves far less of a repair. Best, Dan

Here’s what I discovered, thanks to Brent’s tickling my thoughts. I thought that the bolts weren’t long enough to go through the base built into the cabin top.
The base that is built into the cabin top is apparently not solid. I removed the wood trim under the hatch, peeled back the headliner, and found what appears to be a ceiling made of particle board. There are no through bolts showing underneath. Now it looks as though I’ll have to remove the headliner and particle board ceiling to access the nuts on the bottom of the bolts. Ugh! Please tell me there’s an easier way! Kent SM 243 Kristy St Michaels, ND

Deck hatches
Hi again, guess I’m wearing y’all out?!?!
I have leaking cabin top hatches and am trying to service them all. At least one is leaking between the frame and the deck, and one between the lens and the frame, so I planned to remove them all, replace the gaskets, re-seal the lenses, and reseat the hatches to the deck. Oddly, there is a washer at each screw and bolt between the frame and deck. They are imbedded in adhesive. I can’t figure out why they are there. I’m having a hell of a time removing the first one. The screws along the sides came out easily, but the two at each corner are fine-threaded bolts. They turned easily, but seem to be bedded in adhesive or what ever they are threaded into is turning, and won’t come up as they are turned. I’ve managed to get the forward ones out, but the aft ones by the hinge are proving more difficult. I’m using a putty knife and wooden wedges and can’t lift the aft end without removing the bolts. The upper part of the frame is glued to the flange of the lower part. I’m afraid I’ll bugger them up if I use my putty knife to separate them. I assume they are bedded with sikaflex or 5200??? Also, in trying to remove the lid, I got the bolt acting as pivot on one end out easily, but the pin on the other end if the hinge isn’t budging. I’ve loosened the set screw. I assume it has to be knocked out with a stiff rod from the end where the bolt was removed from the hinge? Does anyone have any tricks of the trade to getting them up? Thanks for any help. HEric The best site is Johns Hopkins APL oceans sensing (http://jhuapl.edu/avhrr). There is also NOAA Marine forecast and NOAA ocean prediction Center (http://opc.ncep.noaa.gov/atl) under headings Atlantic and Atlantic high seas. The navy has sites. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Flexible Prop which one for SM?
Pat is correct. At the time that Amel started using AutoProp instead of MaxProp, Amel modified the C-Drive housing so that AutoProp blades would clear the housing. You don't want to try an AutoProp unless you are positive that you have the new housing. I do not know what hull numbers are involved, but the change occurred in the late 200s. Hull 124 is certainly the older version of the C-Drive housing. Since Amel would have installed a MaxProp at that time, I suspect that is your best choice. Phillip, I am in the process of ascertaining what prop I want for my boat , Max ,Gori, Flexofold...positive and negatives to consider. I just want you to know that an Autoprop probably will not fit your boat. I also have a 94 and was going to purchase one , until Olivier emailed me that boats newer than mine was modified to accept the Autoprop.

I think about to buy a flexible propeller.
Does anybody has a suggestion, which one is the most reliable for a SM from 1994. Is it EWOL, MaxProp or FlexProp?
EWOL sounds real good. I have seen on the website, that there was an installation on a Super Maramu - unfortunately without any description and details if it is a SM2000 or older.
Happy for all remarks.

Re: Flexible Prop which one for SM?
Philipp,
What engine do you have? Amel sold many SMS with AutoProp’s. They are an excellent choice. These props automatically find their pitch depending on conditions (speed and power applied), with lower pitch when you are motoring at higher rpm, slower speed, and higher pitch at relatively lower rpm and higher speed. MaxProp also works well on my SM. I repowered with a 110HP Yanmar when my 78HP Volvo died, I still have the old AutoProp and can sell it at a significant discount if you are interested. Recliners in SM Saloon
Hi again everyone,
I’m considering replacing the settee and pull-out sea berth with two small recliners. I remember another SM that did this effectively several years ago, but can’t remember who. I was wondering where it was done, any specific snags you ran into, what recliners you used, and if you had pictures? Thanks for any advice. Kent SM 243 Kristy St Michaels, MD

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Sonic Speed transducer repair/replacement - how?
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Hi Jose,
We had our sensors changed in Martinique. As with everything on an Amel, what may look daunting turned out to be straightforward.
Disconnect the inboard end of the cables. Undo all the cable ties that secure the cables inside the hull.
Pull the sensors out -- from memory, you may need to tap in a screw to the sensor to give you some purchase, then work the sensor out by rotating it gently while pulling. Ours came out easily.
Don't pull the whole cable out -- you will need the old cables as messenger lines for the new cables.
Having pulled out a foot or so, cut the sensor off and solder the old and new cables end to end. Make absolutely sure that the connection is secure. Then get someone inside the boat to gently pull the new cables into the boat.
From memory the sensors fit snugly in place. I think the guy who did the job may only have used grease to seal them rather than a mastic.
That was 9 years ago.

Re: Sonic Speed transducer repair/replacement - how?
There is an alternative to a paddle wheel sensor. The Airmar CS4500 ultrasonic speed and temperature sensor. It connects directly to the B&G Hydra 2000, there's a specific connection for it.
Only disadvantage is you have to make another hole in the hull. There is info on replacing the sonic speed sensors on the forum somewhere either in messages or files, I forget where...others have done it....just search for it. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Re: Sonic Speed transducer repair/replacement - how?
Jose Venegas
My sonic speed started acting up last season and I ordered the transducers from England. Not cheap but they look like those from the user's manual left in Ipanema from its previous owners.
As the boat went out, I was getting ready to change them but I noticed that there was fouling on the forward sensor and thought that cleaning it would take care of it. Unfortunately, with my happiness, I did not tell the yard's employee that was doing the hull cleaning to be careful with the sensors and he managed to strip the rubber protection of the aft sensor. I saw that but hoped that it had not damaged the sensor. Sadly, my fears were confirmed 30 minutes after launching it, too late to go back. After arriving back to Boston I followed the instructions of testing the system with the new sensors connecting them to a water-filled tube and the test was OK, So I am now forced to replace the sensors since I know is not the electronics. Has anybody done it or seen it done? Any suggestions about how to take to old sensors. My boat is a 2000 vintage but likely built in 1999 and, because of the drawings on the user manual, I am almost sure it does not have the straight sensors mounted on tubes but I will check with france to be sure. I know that the alternative option is to change it for a paddle one but I hope to avoid that given the great experience I had with the sensor since I bought her 7 years ago. Thanks in advance, Jose Venegas Ipanema SM200 278 Boston

Re: Prop Shaft Brake Pads
thomas.kleman <no_reply@...>
Thanks Bill- just to be clear, my pads won't squeeze the prop brake rotor tightly no matter if the adjustment screw is all the out or all the way in. It seems to make no difference. I'm assuming if I change this spring the piston will extend further/harder against the caliper than it does now and the pads will grip the rotor more tightly when the engine is off. There seems to be some material left on the pads. I understand Alan's fix and it seems reasonable to do this at sea.......glad it worked for him and it was quite clever. I'm moored in Bonaire for hurricane season so I have time to wait for parts......I've asked Maud if she has pads and the spring.
