When I tracked down the leak it was the cables from the control box on the shelf going to the TV. Took out the old TV and can still use the Bose system for radio only. The CD/DVD in the control unit does not work and needs to be replaced, but with latest technology we don’t bother with CD’s and DVD’s now. I have not changed much, trying to keep all as original. It sounds like Amel recognizes the problem and is working to fix it. Good to hear that Bill Rouse is also encouraging Amel to improve the original design and that the "Amel Way" can evolve when shortcomings are found. A little disappointing, though, that Amel hasn't moved more quickly and is still supplying the original WOB's that are clearly not hard enough. Cheers, Craig Briggs, SN68 Sangaris

I had received it in March, 2014 and thought, mistakenly that this was simply the new design that AMEL provided. Instead, I learned later that these were trial versions that Amel had somehow provided to me. Not sure if anyone else got them. So here are the pics I posted back in September, 2014 -- https://www.dropbox.com/sc/1tompsdjss3rr0r/AACGUoVzzawY5RnlyKpnjwRga . In a phone conversation with Maud she confirmed that Amel was trying these out. About 2 years ago I had installed this new type WOB in Turkey and changed it here in Malta and examined it carefully (note we visited Croatia and Venice on the way back, so the miles are there). Please also note that I am making no claims about whether Amel should convert to these but I will tell you what I reported to Amel--which is that I was replacing the O ring inside and re-using the WOB! Below is the content of my email to Maud and her response back to me. I thought it was important to provide the information to Amel and give them time before placing it in front of the group. Please also note that Adm Bill was privy to the info and he has contacted Amel to suggest they consider switching to the new WOB. OK...the email to Maud on April 4 and her response on April 5. I was confused about it but in a later telephone conversation you talked with someone at Amel and then explained to me that Amel was trying out the new special WOB. I promised to mount it and report back to you. I serviced the Amel drive on my Super Maramu KAIMI #429 about 2 years ago and installed the special WOB. Last week I serviced it again. There was virtually no wear on the WOB. There was no evidence of water in the drive oil (90 wt) and the springs inside the seals were not rusted (I pack them with grease). It is my impression that the WOB did very well. While I could see some "polishing" could not detect any ridge or groove with my fingernail and I replaced the O ring inside the WOB and am re-using the WOB. I plan to report back again on the next service in a year or 2. I have included a link to photos of the removed WOB. For comparison I show a regular used WOB. Have a nice day. With my kindest regards, Maud TOUILLET Service clientèle/Customer service" Highlights--I could detect NO wear other than a bit of polishing where normally you would see a groove...note the used bronze version as a comparison. There was no evidence of water in the 90 wt oil which I actually ran back through my Mr.Funnel to see if there was water--none-- and now have re-stored for possible future use. Note also that there was no noticeable rust on the springs in the seals. And, as noted, I am re-using the WOB. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Props and rpm
greatketch@...
Pat,
For the classic model MaxProp, the pitch is adjustable over a wide range, so for purchase the numbers that are critical are the prop diameter and the bore for the shaft. If you need confirmation, I am in the Bahamas, so can go overboard with a tape measure and confirm the prop diameter... My recollection for the shaft dimension is 35mm... but confirm that before you sign anything! The primary thing about the Classic that is different on the newer models is changing the pitch requires complete disassembly of the hub. PYI officially says this must be done out of the water, but they do have a list of divers who can tackle the job that they will share if asked. The only one I personally know works in San Francisco Bay... Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Little San Salvador, Bahamas http://fetchinketch.net

Per Joels suggestion I am going to speak with Maud and see what the pitch was when Amel installed Max props on the SM years ago,I need to talk to her anyway. PYI quote was higher $3,750., they suggested I call PYachts in Annapolis to see if I could get a discount and did. I am going to provide them with a wholesale number a friend gave me today and see if they can do better. Maybe buying two would get a better price.

Duane,
I am sorry I can't help you with a purchase source, but it wasn't for want of trying about two years ago. I had looked pretty hard, and our jackscrew was made by a German company, but I could never find a US distributer. For what it is worth, we had our thruster motors (both the big one and the jack screw motor) rebuilt at Broward Armature in Ft Lauderdale. The little motor gave them a LOT more trouble than the drive motor, mostly because of the fussy brush holders. Both eventually came back in excellent shape. Hopefully they learned something on ours and can do yours quicker and easier! Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Rock Sound Harbour, Eleuthera, Bahamas

Bow Thruster Linear Actuator
Duane Siegfri
The electric motor in the linear actuator (raises and lowers the bow thruster) on our boat has gone bad. The motor shop noted the armature is shot. By the way, this motor has brushes, but they are not easily serviced since you have to disassemble the motor to get to them and the brush wires are soldered in. I mention this because the motor has a rubber jacket with dimples that LOOK like they would provide access to the motor brushes. The motor shop said they could send it to Ft. Lauderdale and maybe they could repair it, but then I'm not sure that the screw jack doesn't have it's own troubles. They also thought it would be about the same cost to replace it as to repair it. I've put in a query to the company SNT in France and then followed up with a phone call, but the only guy who can help me is on vacation (he answered the phone!). I haven't heard from a query put in 10 days ago. Does anyone know where one can buy one of these? The SNT site is not designed for sales so I'm assuming someone else sells them. I've also emailed Maud to see if they have one in stock. Duane Wanderer, SM#477

Ground Tackle Query
steve_morrison@...
With an eye towards the South Pacific and beyond in 2019, we are reviewing our ground tackle inventory. Presently we carry the original (to SM 380) stainless Wasi Bugel anchor on 100m of 10mm stainless chain with an additional 10m of stainless chain on 75m of 1" rope rode and a Fortress FX55 anchor stored in the port bow locker. What do you all carry? I am considering adding either an 85# or 105# Mantus anchor and question whether this should be a backup, or if I should consider this my primary and put the Wasi Bugel away as a backup. Do any of you have experience with the Mantus anchors? We currently use the Mantus Snubber hook and Mantus snubber bridle but also have a monster stainless coil spring snubber and very heavy lead 'rode rider' that were on the boat when I purchased it. I really can't imagine using them and would consider taking them (and their weight) out of the bow lockers. Have any of you used, or know of a situation whereupon you wished you had had a 50# lead weight you could slide down your rode to weight it? All the best, Steve Morrison SM 380 TouRai Hilton Head, SC

I'll have to look deeper for the size, I know it is written down on the boat SOMEWHERE! I do know the pitch setting is 20 degrees, left rotating.
My understanding is all of the early production runs of Super Maramus had MaxProps from the factory. Autoprops do not fit the earlier SMs because there is not enough clearance for the blades to swing round. I am sure Bill Rouse or Joel Potter can at least approximate the hull number when the keel was modified to allow the Autoprop room to swing. I'll bet it is buried in the old posts here somewhere...

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Steering hydraulic line
eric freedman
Bill, When the packing is initially installed, I drive it down with a piece of PVC pipe and a small sledge hammer. It is in very tight. As it swells with water it does leak and needs tightening. Over the last 16 years it has always been tight. I was not commenting on scoring the nut but rounding the edges of the nut.
The correct wrench really comes in handy. One time we were hit by two big waves, the first one laid us over the second put the sails in the water. The water entered in the fresh air duct and came out of the vent under the stairs like a fire hydrant until we leveled off. This put a lot of water down below. When we got the mess cleaned up, I went back to my cabin. I saw the carpet was very wet. Initially I was puzzled. I then looked at the rudder post and it was really leaking badly.
It seems that the waves moved the packing on the rudder stock. I had a plumbers wrench and it was very difficult to even turn the nut. When I was done the nut was toast. I now have the proper wrench, spare packing from Amel, and a spare nut duct taped next to the rudder.
That’s my story of the plumbers wrench. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Eric,
If it needs to be THAT tight, it really needs repacking.
Going on tightening it really tight risks scoring the shaft, or breaking the plastic gland nut. (I assume your gland nut is nylon, like mine?) Scoring is not a really big risk with a slow rotation speed like a rudder... but not one I would take.
