Inability To Remove Port Side Genoa Gearbox

For the past year and a half, Pacific Cool (SM 141 built in 1995) has had a port side genoa winch that works electrically, but is drawing 160 amps versus 30 amp for the starboard winch. Technicians in Cape Town and Trinidad tried to remove the gear box with a hydraulic puller but it would not budge.  Recently, I removed the motor which drives the gearbox and it seems to be in good condition, so I assume its the gearbox which has a bad bearing or is really gunked up.  There appear to be four nuts holding the gearbox to the underside of the winch and a gear inserts up into the winch which prevents complete disassembly of the winch itself.  Two days ago the winch stopped working electrically, but I can hear the motor turning with no movement of the winch.  It still works manually.  I checked with AMEL in Martinique last year and they had no clue what to do.  


At this point it seems the best thing to do is sell the boat.  But hopefully someone has a good idea on what to do.  Any ideas welcome.  I am currently in Guadeloupe.

Black Smoke From Volvo Penta Engine Exhaust

Pacific Cool is currently in Guadeloupe and as I was picking up a mooring in Les Saints, a big cloud of black smoke gushed out of my exhaust.  I also noticed black particles floating on the water.  It lasted about 10-20 seconds and then everything seemed to return to normal.  I.E., water temp seemed normal and the oil pressure was a bit low but increased to 1.5 Bar when I increased the RPM.  I let it run for a few minutes and got into the engine room to loom and listen.  All seemed normal.  I need to get off the mooring tomorrow.


Does anyone know what might have happened?  I have a Volvo Penta 22 TMD which till this has run perfectly.  After being on the hard in Trinidad for 6 months ending on 05 Jan 2018 it started immediately.  I plan t have a mechanic check it when I get to Pointe-a-Pitre.

Dead last year in Colombia , and difficult to find the same trademark , I choose equivalent model in 100 Ah in Csb trademark , it is an Hitachi subsidiaries and same technical characteristics . 
Reference is GPL 121000 , can be found in USA , and good price , around 180 USD .

During off-season, or other periods of non-use, the main and mizzen on the SM are routinely left furled inside the mast with halyards eased, while the genoa is dropped and stored inside the boat.

Mark,

Having lived on Grand Bahama for 14 years, I should highly recommend that you return to Fort Lauderdale for any work — or bring a sailmaker from FortLauderdale to wherever you are. Here, you have no recourse if that job is not done right. I doubt that Nassau or the Abacos could offer any worthwhile sailmaker service.

Hi Woody,

The swelling and cracking in your picture sure looks like a classic case moisture having gotten to the steel backing into which the bolts are fastened. The backing, which Amel buried in the fiberglass layup during construction, then rusts and when it gets really bad the rusting metal starts to expand and bursts the fiberglass structure, along with the gelcoat. 

 

No amount of cosmetic repair will fix this - one needs to cut the fiberglass open, remove and replace the steel and reconstruct the toe rail. You will develop excellent fiberglassing skills by the time you are done and drilling out the nylon screws will be a minor step. 

 

I would recommend not embedding the new backing in the rebuilt fiberglass, but putting it on the underside, exposed to air, and using stainless steel (lest you have a repeat performance at some future date).  

 

This is a common problem that has been discussed often on this forum, with trouble areas being the engine room and other hatch cover supports and hinges, stanchion bases and so on.

 

Optionally, just live with it for a few seasons. It will slowly get worse but won't present a structural problem nor make the eventual repair work much more difficult. Use some hydrochloric acid to wipe off the rust stains now and then, put in some cosmetic fill that will last a while and when the toe rail actually cracks open, you can tackle the repair.

Mark,

As Pat says, you'll need an extension on the halyard. I've seen some Amels that have full length halyards on the main and mizzen and some that do not, as is the case with mine. I think the original rigging all had short halyards and the boats were supplied with an extension line for the rare occasions when you would actually lower the main or mizzen, rather than dealing with a big wad of halyard always flopping around. 

You likely have a rope clutch/lock on the mizzen just below the halyard exit slot. That let's you remove the extension line after tensioning the halyard. The long halyards were likely added by "professional" riggers who didn't know Amel's way.

Using the extension line is a bit fussy as the joint has to travel through the mast exit slot (and rope clutch on the mizzen). I usually do a butt-to-butt joint with waxed whipping line starting with sewing the lines together longitudinally (4 or 5 passes), then a few passes around. Takes about 5 minutes but it is very strong and runs freely - better than fussing with knots that easily jamb inside the mast.

Mark, Are you saying that neither sail can be hoisted to the point where the luffs are tight ? Regardless of not reaching the "top of the mast" , if the luff is tight , its as far as it goes. Its hard to understand the mizzen halyard being too short , how was it hoisted . It could be that the previous owner used a short halyard and then installed an extension when lowering it , same procedure as used on the main halyard.

I just heard back from Jean who’s own SM2K Too Much and met the owner of that “Super Maramu 2000 S”.
So the owner’s name is Luc and he apparently work 20 years for Amel..
Somehow his SM2K went back to Amel and had a ceiling of the style of the 54…
I think the owner took on himself to add the S, definitely not an Amel name !

Paul, I just responded to your email to me , but in that I did not comment on Alwgrip or my opinion of it, so... One downside is that after we painted our boat , it looked like it just came out of the factory , maybe even more shine , and then just like with a new car , you worry about scratches . It makes it very easy to clean , the paint does not hold the dirt and stains like gel coat. After ten years the white is losing some shine and the rep told me that now it would be OK to wax the hull , they recommend that you do not wax Alwgrip , at least for many years and there is really no need to. Georgetown has painted many large boats over the years , so they do have the experience and Nick would probably be doing the job.

This is just my two cents from observation and owning a sailboat for 20 years.

Paint looks great.  If your gelcoat has had it and will no longer polish to your satisfaction, paint is the only economical recourse.

The problem with paint is that it is much thinner and more easily injured than gelcoat.  You will need to be very careful with fenders and docking in general.  I personally would not buy a fiberglass sailboat that had been painted.  The life of a paint job is a question you might ponder.  I've heard ten years, but it may be less depending on the quality of preparation.

Still, many custom boats, and steel boats are painted and they do well.  Just be careful with abrasion.

I just heard back from Jean who’s own SM2K Too Much and met the owner of that “Super Maramu 2000 S”.
So the owner’s name is Luc and he apparently work 20 years for Amel.
Somehow his SM2K went back to Amel and had a ceiling of the style of the 54…
I think the owner took on himself to add the S, definitely not an Amel name !

If I remember correctly the (original) owner worked for Amel
and in his boat had the same ceiling and other things as the
54, etc.
