I attempted to refurbish a flowjet pump today, by simply cleaning up the diaphragms, checking the brushes and emptying a lot of carbon dust out. It then worked for about an hour . I would be most grateful if someone who has had experience at this could share it with me as I now have enough of these pumps to start a second hand store!

Hi Kent,

 

I have 4 SENA units on board since 1 year; only used 2 or 3 of them. They work fine – no issues necessitating warranty claim.

Sure beats yelling from cockpit to stern or bow.

Thank you Matt and David.  Your replies indicate the Sena is the best option out there but not without issues.  There are a number of other headsets used by motorcycle riders and police departments, but they require a helmet or separate radio and push-to-talk, and don't really suit our needs.  Too bad they don't have a good reputation for after-market service at that price.

I know a guy who might be in a position to build just what we need....

Hi Amelians,
I want to replace some worn-out headsets we've used for anchoring and masthead work.  They were about $80 US 5 years ago and have been less than ideal since they were new, with static and cheap construction.  I've been looking online and the ones most cited on cruisers  forums are the Sena SPH10 or Sena Extreme Bluetooth sets.  They get great reviews for audio quality, but very poor reviews for warranty/after-market service/and user friendliness for getting them to connect. At $150 per headset, I'm reluctant to buy something that may not be what is advertised to be.

Does anyone have another  brand to recommend?  Experience with the Sena products?

Karen , Maud sent me a drawing of the cross section ,but just looked at it, and its too crude ,not to scale. Perhaps if you pulled up the end of yours a couple inches and take a photo. If someone had a thin section ,that would be the best. Maybe a pencil tracing. Right now we need over 500 ft. and that could easily go to 1000 ft., I am sure.

Hi Craig,
I'm currently attempting to remove and replace the bearings in the lower c drive however I'm having trouble getting the 'trumpet' off. I have the same c drive as you and have removed the upper unit by removing the four bolts which connect the square aluminum upper unit with the trumpet, was I supposed to do this? I have also loosened the hose clamps on the large rubber boots. Does the large rubber boots connecting the trumpet with the hull also come off with the upper unit?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend talking to Alex Ramseyer about his setup with an Highfield. It is long enough that he can fit it very securely under the Simpsons davits with the outboard on. I don’t know if it fits on the roof, though. But if it does, it would be a very good dinghy (as far as dimensions for a 54 is concerned) imho.

4. I’ve seen 50/60ft yachts fitted with Simpsons davits carrying console dinghies with 20hp 4stroke outboards crossing is he Pacific. If the dinghy tubes are well pressed against the davits, the freeboard is ample. I wouldn’t do that it myself but then I’m very risk averse.

We are in the process of selecting a new tender. We are considering the Highfield CL310 or CL340. I would appreciate input on the following issues:

 

  1. Opinions on the Highfield line of tenders. Good or bad.
  2. The CL310 seems to be a bit short and the bow may not sit firmly on the Davit when pulled up. The CL340 works great but will be wider the transom creating issues in tight docking quarters. What is the shortest length used by A54 owners with success?
  3. Can some one provide a measurement from the back of the mizzenmast to the mizzen traveler? I’d like to see which tender would fit on the aft sundeck.
  4. Opinions on carrying the tender deflated, pulled up and firmly lashed to the Davits during crossings? I’m concerned about following seas and waves hitting the tender and placing a substantial force on the Davits.
  5. PVC or Hypalon? There is about a 2000 Euro upcharge for Hypalon.

My sister she is living in Charlotte, so I could ask her to pic up the stuff in your place. Our plan is, to sail up north in summer, so another possibility could be to pic it up by boat, if there is a suitable place to store it for a while?

Hi Mark,
After 16 years I had the bottom of Kimberlite cleaned down to the gelcoat. I did not want to use any form of blasting. I had the yard use a chemical stripper available at Home depot to remove paint down to the gelcoat. It took time and multiple applications but it worked and the bottom came up quite clean. I think the paint we removed weighed somewhere between 3 and 400 pounds and it was ablative paint..
I then had the yard apply 4 coats of interprotect . They then applied a hard epoxy blue paint and then 2 coats of black ablative paint. worked great . We hauled this year after 2 years and the bottom was beautiful. I would suggest using the chemical stripper when it is warm as it is a chemical process.

I had been hoping for soda blasting plus a single coat of epoxy as a primer, on the assumption that the barrier coat under the gel coat would remain intact.  I did not expect that it would not be possible to find a soda blasting contractor in Rhode Island (or nearby Massachusetts) who works on boat hulls.
 
Any suggestions for me?  I feel stuck and am inclined to use glass blasting following by 3 or more coats of epoxy as a barrier coat.

We started out with Eartecs. They work at a different frequency, and actually found the sound quality and range a bit better than Sena. But ours were older, and had a belt pack connected to the headphones. A bit more cumbersome, and Cindy dropped one overboard when it fell off her skimpy swim suit..... All around, we like the Sena’s better. The Sena Expand costs a bit less, and the boom mic is shorter, making it a bit less prone to knocking into things. Works great on the bow, up the mast, during docking, and scouting an anchor spot in the dinghy (close by).

Yes, Osprey did mine as well, but I had them use sand blasting on the metal keel. They use a tent to keep containment of the sand, soda and paint that is removed.  Like Mark, I did the coating and repainting myself.  For the keel, Osprey finished the sand blasting and stepped back, and I immediately did a prep wipe down of the metal and coated the keel with the interlux 2000 epoxy.  Within minutes is key.  You can coat the whole keel with two people in under 30 minutes with rollers and brushes.  Then once it is coated, you do it again.  I ended up with 4 coats of interlux and the keel lasted 10 years with only an occasional rust break through the coating.

 

This is what Osprey does, and they work on super big boats.  They are more than willing to let you do part of the work, and helpful with advice if you have questions.

I did not have them blast the keel down to bare metal.  However, they did have to epoxy coat the keel right after blasting since there were some spots where the iron was already exposed before soda blasting and the soda blasting exposed a few more spots.  Thus my comment to "remind" whoever does the soda blasting that it is an iron keel so that they are ready to apply epoxy paint immediately after blasting.  The Iron starts to rust the instant it is exposed.  I ended up doing some more extensive grinding/sanding and epoxy coating to iron keel after their work was done.  Working on the bottom of the keel is NOT fun.  In hindsight, I probably should have just had them do it but I am cheap and a bit pigheaded about these things sometimes.

Yes I feel the same way.  Never again shall I attempt to do my bottom.  I tried using coppercoat with dismal success.  Worse was the lac of support.  Needless to say, it's time to redo my bottom and I will gladly pay to have it done; one collapsed lung lung enough for me.
