Re: VHF Cable Replacement
Scott SV Tengah
I did the same. New RG-8X from new Shakespeare antenna all the way to the nav station. The original Amel way is to have a junction at the base of the mast, presumably so you can remove the mast without having to take out the antenna wire. If I ever need to remove the mast, I'll cut the coax and put the junction on. Earlier I couldn't communicate with the admiral in a dinghy 300 meters away and now we can hear USCG broadcasts up to 200nm offshore.
Connection at the antenna was taped with self-amalgamating rubber tape and then covered with 3M electrical tape. I even zip tied the electrical tape for good measure. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: Adjusting Ultraflex steering cables?

Also Olivier - what do you think about the play on the flange/joint where the cable goes through the stringer? We have put a bit over 20 thousand nautical miles on it, so I assume this is a wear item that may just need replacement? Or is there an adjustment procedure?
A bit gun shy now, so figured I'd ask what may be a simple question vs. risk breaking something else! -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

We installed the polyethylene plastic plugs from AMEL, and they lasted about 12 months in mostly tropical sun before crumbling away to uselessness. Cleanly and completely removing the remaining parts after the top has sun-rotted is very tedious, and not a job we wanted to do again.
We then filled the holes flush to the top with GE SCS2000 silicone, gray (essentially identical to Dow Corning 795). Looks great, does not shrink when it cures, and has lasted 3 years without issue. Since silicones are generally UV stable, I expect this will be as close to permanent solution as can be found on a boat. If you go this route, give the upper surface of the track a good coat of wax before filling the holes. That will make the inevitable bit of thin silicone film you smear on the surface wipe off easily after it cures. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie, Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA

Re: Adjusting Ultraflex steering cables?

Thanks Olivier. I used the method Mike suggested and the eye was easily rotated back to the right position. With the quadrant disconnected, I rotated the helm end to end and thankfully there is zero resistance. Hopefully I dodged a bullet.

Hello Scott, what you describe is frightening and the lesson is: Don't let anyone work on your boat unless they know what they do, and try to get all the informations you can before letting them do. That's what this forum is very good at: exchanging informations between novices and old salts who have been dealing with issues. Adjusting the steering cables should be piece of cake... I'm afraid your cable(s) are now partly uncoiled: the strands may be a bit untwisted, which may put a bit of resistance in their sheaths. While the cables are disconnected at the quadrant end, you should turn the wheel from one end to the other, many many times, to try to get the eye terminal back to flat-original position. If you feel a lot of resistance while doing this, then this means the cables are permanently damaged, and it may be time to order and install a new pair. Tell us what happens after you try the above. Good luck. Olivier.

My masts were down this summer - I used the old cable to pull new marine grade RG-8X. The antennas I replaced with Shakespeares. Gld I did- I broke open the old ones- they were corroded. House wiring from mast step to radio was just fine. Chris S/V Amarok SM 385 Deltaville

Hi Mark,

I am also in the process of replacing the VHF antenna. As they say, I’m not expert, but…. My understanding is that sea air can creep into anywhere. This is especially true where there are connections. Our SM has coax coming down the antenna, then connecting to coax that goes to the radio. My plan is to bypass the connection, and just run coax (connected at the antenna) in one piece all the way back to the radio, I guess about 80 feet of coax. Tom Peacock SM 240 Aletes Chesapeake Bay

A question to those who needed to replace the VHF cable in the main mast: Did you also need to replace the VHF cable from the base of the mast to the rear of the radio?

The original was literally a pain in the butt. I always thought if I leaned back in thoughtful repose I would wind up on the cabin sole wedged in by the fire extinguishers.
The seat angles are very comfortable and it is very sturdy, The OEM seat pad is a little lacking so I throw a cushion in the seat; it all works very well. -- Mark Mueller Brass Ring A54

Re: Cleaning fresh water tank on my SM2K
I had the same black growth in my tank the first time I looked. I tried weak bleach solution, vinegar, power washer, all with inadequate results. Someone suggested that the growth is probably a bacteria of some kind, as algae requires sunlight. I don't know if that's true, but I finally got rid of it with a very strong bleach solution of 6 gallons in a tank full to the brim. I let it sit overnight and voila, all growth dead and debris lying in bottom of tank. I pumped it out with a sump pump, got the last bit out with my shop vac, then filled about 1/4 full before pumping through the fresh water system. Two more rinses with dock water, then filled with dock water run through two charcoal filters, and flushed all the fresh water lines with that dechlorinated water.
I shock the tank once a year with 3 gallons of bleach, let sit overnight, and rinse/refill as above. The tank has stayed mostly free of growth on less it sits half empty for a few months. I try to leave the tank pretty full most if the time, and avoid using dock water if I can. I also run the tank water through a charcoal filter before it is distributed to the faucets, shower, and the watermaker. A small amount of brown stain remains in a few places on the sides of the tank, nothing I've tried gets it out. -- Kent & Iris KRISTY

Hi Scott, On my SM#23, the pole is threaded at the end and the eye fitting is screwed onto it. This allows for proper orientation and positioning of the eye so it can mount correctly with the vertical bolts of the quadrant. Maybe yours was over tightened when someone was working in it? If you can hold the pole and keep it from rotating, perhaps you can back the eye fitting off? Or maybe my system is totally different than your A54... Figured I'd mention it just in case it helps. If you have electric coil heating on your units, the water flow should not run. If you have reverse cycle heating and air, the salt water pump should only run when one the compressors is running on one or more of the three units. Re: Adjusting Ultraflex steering cables?
Scott SV Tengah
As these things go, it's never as simple as you expect. Someone worked on it and tried to rotate the internal cable, with the toggle eye on the end. I surmise they rotated it multiple revolutions. This was their ill informed way of trying to adjust the cable tension. Now this internal cable's eye has set in a resting position that is 45 degrees off from vertical. That, of course, does not align with the vertical bolt on the steering quadrant. If I try to rotate the eye back, it will rotate but will bounce back to 45 degrees from vertical as soon as I release tension. If I rotate it a full 360 degree revolution, it clicks but keeps the same non-vertical resting orientation. I emailed ultraflex and they said to just temporarily twist the eye and put the bolt in. Not comforting that we'd have that constant rotational tension as the cable moves in and out. They also suggested if I really wanted to align it, I could "Disconnect the cable from both ends and you should be able to push the shaft in and out while you turn the cable if you want it to move back into place." Not sure exactly what that means. Any ideas from those who have more experience with this system on how I can get this fixed without damaging the cables? Do I simply twist the eye, install it and a few hundred sea miles will untwist the cable and orient it correctly? -Scott
