Sorry if this is obvious, or already been discussed.

How is the interior wood quality in the 54 compared to the sm? Im pretty sure no laminates are used in the sm and the quality is top notch, but wondered if Amel has retained that quality through the newer models. The current models 50/54/64. Look like they may use laminates on the doors but i could be wrong. Those will be out of my price range any way.

Paul,

First and foremost, congratulations on your new Amel. You are going to love it.

Anything other than DHL or FedEx coming from the USA is most likely to get lost or can take up to 8 weeks to arrive. Same is true for mail going to the USA. The marina will happily accept packages and mail if you are in the dock or on a mooring. Be sure to include the vessel name on the outside in large print. Also, mark the mail as “documents – no declared value”. It will clear customs faster with this on it.

As for any other suggestions on voting – I’m not sure the group would appreciate me going there.

With best regards,

Mark

Hello group.  We will be new SM owners in a couple weeks in the Windward Islands, and will be staying at Le Marin for a while in November, including election day.  We are trying to figure out how we will vote (as it is kinda important right now...).  We have someone collecting our mail in the US and we thought maybe she could send our ballots to us in Martinique and then we would send them back to the US.  Can you Le Marin people tell me how the folks at the marina handle incoming mail like that?   Or any other suggestions about voting?

Thanks,

Paul C.

Hello Alex;

The prices you have been quoted are better than what we have seen in Europe. The one that always seems extremely over priced, is the Volvo air filter element at over 100 Euros.

I don’t think you are being over charged based on what we have seen in the Med.

Removing drawer faces

Has anyone removed the false drawer faces on the port side of the main salon?

I was hoping to trade out one of those unused handles for another that has broken, but I can't figure out how to access it. So before I undertake cutting a hole, I though I'd ask the group.

(This may apply only to the Santorin, where we have 4 drawer faces but only two drawers, the other two being false - I don't know about the SM's)

Many thanks,

Hi, Glad you got it sorted.

Perhaps something like one of these would be a useful addition to the Shorepower supply for preventing issues.

Alan,

Problem solved.
You are right, it's the shore power side.

In Greece every Marina has a different polarity !
We changed it and everything works.

Thank you very much for your support.

I agree with Alan - if those ohm readings were across the un-plugged shore power cord it is definitely bad. You should get infinite, open-circuit readings (assuming you unplugged the cord first).

Good luck with it..

Seems to me that since you can run all your appliances without tripping the breaker when the generator is running , everything with your appliances is OK.
The problem must be on the shore power side.
It could be that your shore power cable has a fault with leaking to ground, maybe it has been contaminated with salt water.
Your meter measurements indicate that could be the problem.
The measurement between blue and ground and brown and ground should be very high and more or less the same.
You say you have already replaced the plug and the shore power relay, I would suggest replacing the shore power cable itself.

Hoi Alex
pretty much expensive. but if we are a owner of AMEL a  SM or 54,55,50,64 we have to spend a lot of money. Ok , I bought all a lot of spare items, maybe for 2 years in Europe. Ok I know you bought the boat in US. So keep speending money because if you will import the spare items from beautiful Euroup you pay a lot of transport/duty cost.
Maybe you have friends/familie coming to your boat and bring from Amel a lot of spare items. I do it .
Actually in Cap Verde Crossing soon to Brasil

Hi all. It is a boldman who advises against rig work because the winds are lighter in the Pacific and s bold recipient of the advice who takes it. I am a lifetime Pacific sailor and it can be WILD.

I have spent time in the Atlantic too and in my experience it is a pussy cat by comparison but I guess I have not experienced it at its worst.

Actually it is a bold man who advises against rig work anywhere. It is a very personal decision as the guy on the boat pays the price either way.

Hello Heinz,

I was 5 months in Panama and never heard of a rigger in the country.

However, the winds are lighter in the Pacific and if your rig was checked by a good rigger in the recent past, you’ll be ok.

If you need a GREAT one in Tahiti, look for Benoit Parnaudeau.  He used to rig Isabelle Autissier’s boat plus he skippered a Volvo 60 in the RTW solo event a few years back.

Good luck,

In gear when sailing.

Danny and Yvonne SIMMS

We have the hurth gearbox with manual shift and no shaft brake. (0.8 litre atf). Also auto prop. To swivel the auto prop to low drag position it needs to be In gear. Which? Forward or reverse? Easy. When sailing and the shsft is spinning merrily in neutral put it into gear. The correct way will result in a satisfying Clunk and the shaft will stop. The wrong way, no clunk and the shaft will continue turning, albeit more slowly. This slow turning is because the clutches are lightly engaged and obviously this will result in unessesary wear.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Volvo air filters / diesel filters

Mark Erdos

Alex,

Often times NAPA will have the equivalent parts. The have a great website to search for parts.

We have ordered from Defender.com or Fisheriessupply.com. Both are in the USA and will ship internationally. Sometimes we will find a part in the USA much cheaper and use eZone to ship it to us in the retailer doesn’t ship internationally. We recently had to replace a battery charger. The unit we needed at Budget Marine (an oxymoron) was about $1000 higher than the USA lowest price at hodgesmarine.com. Even with the 8% import fee and international shipping, it was $700 cheaper than Budget Marine here in Bonaire. It took about 6 days to get from Florida to Bonaire and saved us a ton on money.

I guess what I am trying to say check prices globally. If you happened to be on an EU islands (such as Martinique etc.), then purchasing and shipping from the EU is much easier than the USA. If you find yourself in the US Virgins or PR, the US Post Office will ship next day at the same rates as state-state in the US.

I understand there is a decent chandlery in Santa Marta Colombia, since you are heading that way perhaps you can delay the purchases.

Hope this helps.

----- Bill R ---- Perhaps shipping parts to Amel owners could be an add on to the Amel School J

Series Drogue Construction Details

Mark Isaac

Hello All-

For those of you that carry a series drogue, what line was used to make it?  At least one company out there offers the drogue made fully or partially from the newer HMPE fibers.  Given the difference in characteristics (stretch and coefficient of friction come to mind)  between these new fibers and the double braid nylon used in the original study, I wonder if this is a good idea and if there are any studies to support this.

The weight savings with the newer fibers would be substantial.  My concerns are that the cones may slip off or the shock load would cause damage to the boat and/or allow the drogue to break free.

Also, according to the original study, a boat displacing 40,000 pounds will require 160 cones give or take a few.  Several manufacturers of the drogue suggest construction using only 147 cones, but I can't find anything to explain the reduction in number.

Hello Heinz and I am sure you are really looking forward to heading out into the Pacific. One important question in order to give you correct advice, how old is the standing rigging on your boat today?
