Surveyor in Antigua?
Michael & Robyn
Does anyone have a recommendation for a surveyor in Antigua?
We are doing our haul out bottom paint and the usual maintenance next week. Was thinking that if I need a survey for the next round of finding insurance for next year I might call for a survey proactively. -- Michael & Robyn SY RIPPLE SM2K # 417

Re: A54 Nav station seat replacement

I had the same problem. The plastic seat was totally busted.
After contacting Amel, they told me they cannot supply a replacement, so I looked on line. I found a really good replacement at Wayfair in the US. I bought 2 different styles called "Clay Stool by Wade Logan" just to have a spare. You have to redrill the existing holes, but it is very easy to adapt and works just like the original. No one would know it is not the original - maybe not quite as comfortable, but...it works and it is cheap. Jamie Phantom A54 #44

Re: Secondary Saltwater Manifold SMs & 54s, and possibly some Santorins, Mangos, and Maramus
Hi Bill,
This is also of interest to me. As you know in March/April 2018 my Primary manifold broke off and we installed a new AMEL supplied unit. 1 year later, preparing to continue to SOLOMON ISLANDS I had corrosion again on the same location and the French local Marine technician in VANUATU recommended to replace with a PVC modification which he made for me. Since then I have been looking into a custom made SS unit but was advised against that option.
So – yes very interested in an alternative for the Primary manifold as well.

Re: A54 Nav station seat replacement
Scott,
I also had an uncomfortable spot right in the middle of the seat @ the nav station; it almost looked something was trying to poke thru the leather. Last year December, when AMELIT went on the hard @ THE BOAT WORKS YARD MARINA in COOMERA QLD AUSTRALIA (55 acres packed with an abundance of Marine Craftsmen), I decided to have the helm seat; the nav station seat as well as the vanity station seat in the Master Cabin re-upholstered. After a couple of days I ran into the upholsterer and he asked me what I had done to the NAV station seat; he took me to his shop and the plastic seat pan was completely cracked & destroyed. Although I am fat I am pretty sure this didn’t happen during my ownership. Anyhow – it seems you are not the only one with this problem.
Not sure how Michael from MELFI Designs fixed it but he told me not to worry. All seats are now back on the boat but I have not seen & tested them myself but Sue & Brian MITCHELL (AMEL SM - SV LOLA) who generously keep an eye on AMELIT tell me it all looks good.

Hi Mark. As an alternative to consider, here’s a different approach. After thoroughly cleaning out the old material I filled the hole with white silicone. It tends to shrink while curing so I left a significant crown of material when filling each hole. Then after several days (maybe a week to be sure) of curing cut the silicone flush with a razor blade. Very clean result and it looks like new after 4 years. Have not had the “opportunity” to dig one out to verify adhesion. I would be very interested to hear of other‘s solutions.

Thanks Danny. I have a dremel tool bit I think will work well to clean the holes. Just to clarify, you didn’t coat the plugs with anything? And they have lasted well?
I do believe there is more than one size. Maud asked me to measure the holes to make certain she shipped the correct ones.

Hi Mark, I replaced mine with the plugs from Amel. Very happy with the result. I cleaned out the holes and tapped the new plugs in with a rubber hammer. Takes a while digging the old and crumbling plugs but after 18 years I guess the plugs had done well. In the dark recesses of my mind there is a memory that there are two sizes. I am getting ready to tackle a project I have been putting off for a while. I need to replace the screw cover plugs in the genoa track. I would like to get this right the first time and not have to redo this.
I ordered plugs from Amel. I was sent white semi opaque plugs the exact size of the hole. I am not sure these are going to have much UV protection so I have a question to those who have done this. Did you cover or treat the top of the plug with something such as paint before installation?
I have some Dow 737 goop to seal the plugs (this was recommended on this forum). I do not think this has any UV protection properties, so again, the same question. How do I protect the plug?
Many thanks.

Hi Scott,

If you pull the cover from the bottom seat section you will see that the plastic frame is all broken. I tried filling the inside of the plastic seat base with dense foam from a can after glueing the bits together with Gorilla glue, worked for awhile. I just bought a new plastic seat frame from Amel Caraibes, just over 100€. Put the leather cover over this new frame. The base seat I bought was slightly smaller and now turns 360 degrees on the base. Had to put some extra foam padding under the leather cover. Not sure how all of you keep your engine room smelling fresh! We have a bucket for pre-washing dishes which we physically walk outside to dump overboard and it still smells a bit in the engine room when I'm down there doing maintenance. While it's true that you shouldn't have CO contamination from the Diesel engine, is it worth risking it? A leak somewhere in the exhaust circuit could really ruin your day.
Jeff - Regarding the Wakespeed - I don't know much about them but I guess your A54 has the 175A alternator? Can you change that to the Mastervolt 24/110 setup? It's very programmable so you can set bulk/absorption/float just like a 220v charger. It's also rated for continuous use and I have tested it. With 30% SOC, I ran it until my batteries were fully charged. Keep in mind my lifepo4 setup can take full current util the batteries are effectively full so the alternator was maxing out for 3.5 hours. MV said I didn't need a temp sensor but I installed one anyways and it didn't taper output. The MV/Alphapro setup has a reg-on wire that can safely turn off your alternator. I installed a switch in case I want to stop charging on long motoring sessions. But generally I just let the other components in my system manage that (BMS, alpha pro regulator). I recall a post where you had a mini battery explosion during motoring so I understand your desire to control charging when nearly full. I know you said you have lead, but if you're going to spend money to upgrade, you might want to consider future proofing in case you decide to move away from lead one day. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

A54 Nav station seat replacement
Scott SV Tengah
Hi all,
Has anyone repaired or replaced their A54 nav station seat? The back support portion on ours now reclines back 120degrees relative to the seat portion. The culprit is that the back/seat are supported by a white plastic frame that has cracked allowing the back support portion to recline too far. This is quite odd as neither myself nor the admiral are heavy people, but..."it's a boat!". There's also a hard spot right in the middle of the seat portion that makes sitting there quite uncomfortable if you don't sit just right. Anyone have similar problems and fixed it? Or anyone have suggestions on how to fix it? Furniture is not my strong suit. -Scott -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Kent, As it stands now, the manifold is planned to be produced in the SM 2000 configuration. I am also planning that it be shipped with 2 plugs.
The next step is a trial installation. An A-54 owner has agreed to purchase the first production manifold and install it. As soon as I know more, I will post in the Group and on Facebook Bill

Re: It´s time to introduce ourselves.
Dear Martin and Anke, thank you for telling me your story since we last said goodbye in the Beagle waters. We still stay until 2011 and after 16 years, with big sadness, we returned to Buenos Aires. In that time we worked 3 seasons in Italy on a beautiful Solaris 72. In Uruguay we did some important works to Saudade III and then we navigate two years in Brazilian waters to finally get in 2018 to the Lesser Antilles. This year we were blocked at Martinique because of the pandemic. We would always intend to find a nice SM 2000, but with this situations of uncertainty we prefer to stay in standby for the moment. In 2016 after a year of hard work, the third edition of our Patagonia nautical guide came out, ready to corrupt the tropical dreams of some sailor, persuading him to go to Polynesia passing through the classic route! So far no one who has taken that decision has ever complained, indeed several of them have regrets of not to be stayed longer in that waters! Congratulations for your new 54, Mago del Sur (wow, what evocative name!), a magnificent yacht that certainly will give you so much satisfaction! We stay in touch and who knows if there is an opportunity to cross our routes again. A big hug to you and Anke and fair wind. Giorgio Ardrizzi sv Saudade III - Sharki #1
