Having neither owned nor sailed a SM, but nevertheless a major Delos fan, I think the 54 berth situation is fantastic. Lee boards are terrific. We just sailed 8 nights and through some rough stuff. The big bed allows for switching angles easily and sleeping crosswise as earlier said. The Lee boards are sturdy and perfectly placed. There also is then a his and hers side to the berth and storage.

hello there did not find the step by step but from memor ... 1.- ensure that your boat ishigh engough on blocks to allow the rudder to be slipped down when released from holdings; see drawings for approximate measurement 200 mm + add height for wooden blocks to rest on & lever to be inserted to slip back in place when finished. 2.- rest rudder on wooden blocks before removings bolt or top part 3.- careful with bronze rod going to BLU ground plate when sanding down gel coat layers; can be repaired by soldering if cut inadvertendly ... 4.- remove bolts & stainless steel holders (crapaudine 4 is the bottom one femelot 3 is the intermediate one; this one gave me the shivers as I thought it locked tight when in fact it is preformed and opens up when bolts are untightened. 5.- bielletes 5 top of rudder Under berth to be opened (remove bolts & nuts); nylon (delrin) screw on stuffing to be removed 6.- support rudder with long lever from bottom, remove wooden blocks & support rudder when coming down slowly. 2 sets of strong arms can do the trlck. 7.- lay it down & whilst on ground check for cracks on resin alongside the StSteel shaft (signs of grounding in the past); Time to repair if found 8.- prepare already stuffing cord to replace old one top of rudder; holding nut can be fastened by hand & will need to be re-tightened after a few hours sailing anyway 9.- rebuilding is reverse action (replace bolts & nuts if needed. Alex that sounds like quite a project ! I’ve never seen a re gelcoat job before. My 1985 maramu has been painted above the waterline and is in need of a refurb at some point. I had assumed it’d be a vinyl wrap?? or most likely awlgrip I’d be interested in the process you are using and if you think its significantly more costly than the paint job alternative. Appreciate that the answer depends on how much is done by others vs diy. All the best Miles

couldn't agree more with Joel. The Aft cabin of the 54 is one of our favorite
areas and has made the time on board a pleasure. We have not yet made any long
distance passages, so I cannot comment on utilizing the aft cabin at sea. As a
couple on board, I've always imagined that we would use the sea berth
anyway.

Chantiers Amel made one ( that I know of, maybe more ) Super Maramu with a truly centerline berth by robbing space from the aft deck locker and relocating the watertight bulkhead separating the aft cabin from the aft deck locker further aft. I have seen this modification performed by Amel owners with not quite as good results. This really makes the aft deck locker much less useful and the aft cabin is, ergonomically, less than satisfactory to most people’s tastes. Having been fortunate to own several SM 53”s and an Amel 54, I can tell you that a practical and fully useful centerline aft cabin berth was a big priority in the evolution of these two models. I found the Amel 54 berth to be more comfortable in every circumstance as the lee boards worked well and you could fit a split mattress with a lee cloth as an option to divide the mattress. While not having your partner climb over you to visit the loo eliminated a ‘ target of opportunity’, it also made for less disturbance of your and your partners sleep… The storage space under the Amel 54 berth was truly cavernous and easily accessed due to the twin gas assist struts.

Main Sail Furler

For some time in heavy air while furling the main , the motor did not seem strong enough. I now believe it may have been that the furler had a bearing that was near seizing . Last fall the main would not roll out , assuming it was the motor , I used a winch handle and the it would not budge , eventually I broke it free and sailed on. At the end of the season I dismantled the gearbox and found the tapered bearing was completely seized. So if you think your furler is a littlle slow/weak , you may want to have a look inside. Duane posted some pics that were helpful . It took me longer to find the seals than the bearings, so I thought I would post the bearing and seal info and sources. Bearings: Source , Motion Industries - Tapered bearing item # 32009xm-90kmi , Bore 45mm, OD. 75mm, Width 20mm , Manufacturer Timken Ball Bearing , item # 9105k Bore 25mm, OD. 47mm, Width 12mm Manufacturer Fafnir Oil Seals : Source , Metric Seals Inc. 45mmX60mmX7mm 25mmX33mm X6mm You will need one each of bearings and seals Pat SM Shenanigans

Hello Thanks for all the replies, the reason we are considering removing the rudder blade, is that we are preparing the hull surface and keel, to recoat with new gelcoat. We already did this with the decks, dodger, cockpit and engine room in 2013. The space is so small between the hull and the blade that it is virtually impossible to clean and treat the surface properly. Any thoughts on this matter?
