Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Riggers In Trinidad and Martinique
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Bill, Thanks for the information. As you know, not all rigging wire is created equal, and rigging wire is made in metric and inch dimensions. I noted that you did not specify, but I am fairly sure that the rigging wire available in Seattle and possibly Trinidad are inch. My experience is that when riggers use inch dimensions, they use slightly smaller wire than the original metric dimensions than Amel uses. Additionally, Chinese stainless steel is popping up everywhere. Did you ask for a certificate of origin or some other proof of country of manufacture? Also, I have seen many riggers use existing Amel rigging parts when re-rigging an Amel because they cannot source some parts, especially the small turnbuckle on the forestay. Over the years I have seen many marine suppliers cave into the price pressure placed on them and when people only compare prices. Many of these suppliers give their customers what they ask for...the lowest price without regard to quality. The best examples of this are the very low quality products offered by Worst Marine. Lastly, I am familiar with a Super Maramu owner that used the wrong rigger, who used bad materials about a year ago. He is going to sail to Martinique to have everything replaced again. Martinique isn't the only good place to replace Amel SM rigging, but they certainly are the most experienced on this side of the Atlantic. I have a quote from them done in 2016 for 9032.34 Euro. I am going to write Gaetan and ask what the difference is. I will CC you of the email. I believe that you are on the right track, but there are other variables that you need to address in your comparisons. Your current rigging lasted 22 years and on a recent circumnavigation. There has to be a reason that Amel OEM rigging outlasts other rigging by almost two times the norm. The OEM rigging is available in kit form and ready to install from ACMO, the OEM supplier to Amel for your boat. The kit includes everything down to the washers. Email philippe"at"acmo.fr I hope this helps you. Mark, I just checked my Ouija Board and my Magic 8-Ball. I get exactly the same answer on both: "You May be Right." These two hurricane prediction devices have been right more than they have been wrong, and when they both agree, I feel it is, at least, notable. However, let me point out that I do not know which one of us the "You" refers to. My favorite statistic is "95% of all statistics are made up." I was told this in 2004 by a hedge fund manager in NY while I was making a presentation to him for his investment. I think he doubted my statistics and BTW, he did not invest in my company. Hi, If you are planning to cross to Martinique, I would switch to straight 40 weight oil. When I first received Kimberlite, The factory Yanmar chief mechanic came to replace the turbo. He said to use only straight 40 weight unless you are heading to somewhere very cold.
I think the 40 weight might help the oil pressure a little. However , there is something going on in the bottom end of your engine, either too much tolerance in the main bearings, or a defective oil pump. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Christian Alby,
I have never seen a problem where the oil pressure on an engine would drop as engine RPM was increased. The only explanation that I can think of is a mechanical failure of the oil pump. As I recall from your previous posts:
1. Your engine experienced significant dilution of the engine oil with diesel fuel followed by at least two runaways which likely exceeded the maximum RPM rating of the engine.
2. Apparently due to the loss of lubrication, the oil pump was badly scored.
My guess is that due to the lack of lubrication, high engine speed (and perhaps some galling of the oil pump which lead to the scoring the oil pump) that something in the drive for the oil pump has mostly failed. Perhaps the gears driving the oil pump are beginning to slip at 2000 RPM now because either the gears or the bearings that should hold the correct clearances have been damaged. In other words the gears could be only partially engaged due to wear of the gear or the bearings and as the oil pressure rises with engine speed, you reach a point where they begin to slip, causing a rapid drop in oil pressure. Lowering the engine RPM and oil pressure might be allowing the pump to resume turning as the load on the pump drops and the gears partially reengage. Certainly unless this problem is corrected, your new engine will not last long. It is of course impossible to know for sure what the problem is but given that the oil pump is essentially a positive displacement pump which should pump more oil with increasing RPM, this is the only scenario that I can think of to cause the symptoms that you described.
Best of luck and Happy New Year,

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: best place to leave your boat in the Caribbean (windward islands)
Hi Bill R,
I’m going to do something I don’t normally do. I going to disagree with you. In regards to the statement, Grenada is overdue for another big hurricane. We did tons of research prior to making our decision to stay there this past season, some of which I will share with you.
Hurricane Ivan in 2004 was an anomaly. Statistically, the island of Grenada is more than twice as safe when compared to the state of New Jersey. Yes Ivan did devastate Grenada but, this was the first to do so since 1963 with the arrival of Hurricane Flora. Flora by the way caused more death and destruction in Trinidad Tobago than Grenada. Pre-Ivan Grenada was considered below the hurricane belt and deemed safe. Grenada was a favorite for insurance companies to direct owners. This is because “statistically” a massive size hurricane will not hit there. I am not saying it will never happen but the odds are, it will not.
The pictures you attach are the boat yards where prior to Ivan boats were not tied down with hurricane straps. They fell over because they were only supported by only the jack-stands. This blasé approach was due to the fact nobody on the island could recall when the big storm last hit. This has changed. The yards use thick straps to secure boats that are attached to massive ground screws. Would this survive another Ivan? Who knows. But I am guessing you would not see the level of devastation and destruction to boats if they had tied them down for Ivan as they do today.
The typical pattern for storms forming that far south in the Atlantic is to arrive in Grenada as a tropical storm and then increase to hurricane strength as they enter the Gulf of Mexico. These storms can hit Grenada with a lot of rain but are certainly not hurricanes.
One of the great things about being in Grenada was the option to get out of the way of any approaching storm. I agree Trinidad is only 85 miles away and this was a part of our hurricane plan. Our insurance company gave us the lowest named storm deduction and our filed plan was to stay in the Grenada area. They liked the location of the marina. And there are several H’holes on the southern coast.
On a side note, we loved the island of Grenada during the time we spent there is last summer. The people are the friendliest we have encountered on our journey to date. The island is beautiful with flowers and fruits everywhere. The Port Louis Marina is perhaps the nicest marina we have stayed in. Absolutely first class. It has solid concrete docks and sits in a basin surrounded by mountains. There is no wind or ocean exposure from anywhere in the marina. However, because of the mountains, it is hot as hell there with very little breeze. But, we have air-conditioning.
Just my two cents worth.
With best regards,
Mark

Just a few comments from my experience in the Caribbean concerning Curacao and Grenada.
Curacao & Hurricanes: The ABCs and specifically Curacao are not out of the path of hurricanes. In 2007, we ran south from Felix which hit Curacao. There have been several other hurricanes, but most hurricanes hitting Curacao reportedly have caused little damage.
Curacao & Marinas/Yards: Seru Boca Marina - Spanish Waters with over 100 slips...several Amels have stayed at this marina The Curaçao Yacht Club - Spanish Waters - They gave BeBe a reasonably-priced berth in 2007 for about a week...they have a fuel dock Kima Kalki Marina - Spanish Waters...I know nothing about this. Curacao Marine (Haul Out Yard)- Schottegat harbor GPS pos: N 12 06.5 W 068 55.3 This place will tell you that they have Amel experience and told me that last year they saw over 20 Amels. I believe that both statements were serious exaggerations. A client of mine had Curacao Marine perform C Drive and Bow Thruster Service. Neither was done correctly.
Grenada: It is amazing how time heals/changes things. In 2004, IVAN, a Category 5 Hurricane devastated Grenada. Grenada is overdue for the same thing. Trinidad is only 85 miles from Grenada.

To elaborate on this, Curacao Yacht Club and Curacao Marina are two different entities located at two different bays (Both in the southwest though).
The Yacht club has no facilities for putting your boat on the dry but has better social aspects. Cheers, Arno

Hi Iftach,
Welcome to this site ! I can't think of any question about an Amel to which you will not find the answer here ; plus, Amel owners are great folk to meet.
It's useful to add two items to anything you write--your boat number and its present port. The reason for the boat number is that Amel boats do vary slightly according to when they are built and for instance a query relevant to my boat, number 302, may not be relevant to an earlier or later boat. As to your present port, it makes it easier to answer queries about repairs etc if you say where you are--plus you might just find yourself offered a cold beer ( or two!) by another Amel owner in the same place.
Fair winds,
