James,

Atlantic Arch has a pretty good video here that explains the installation process: https://vimeo.com/22743502

Per the instructions, as the arch is sized for the width of the boat, it is bolted about 4” wider than the boat. I used cargo ties to compress the arch and secure it in the deck mounts. This will reduce but not eliminate side to side movement.

I added a pad eye to the transom above the middle hand hold handle. I then made some wire fittings with pelican hook attachments. These attach to the upper corners of the arch using KIT78000 Clamp Assembly/Lifting Eye and the pad eye. I have the wire in place when at sea and when at anchor or dock, remove the wire on the starboard side so the steps are accessible. This method has illuminated all side to side movement and the arch is very solid.

We used the standard backing plates that came with the arch. The plates on the port side are hard to access sine they are above the propane locker and not much space there to get a wrench on the bolt.

With best regards,

Mark

Hi Pat,

I've got an older SM (#72), and will be adding a linear drive before we do our Pacific crossing early next year. I'd really appreciate I if you could send me any info and pictures you have of how you added the drive to your boat. I've got some ideas, but seeing a good and working installation would be great.

Thanks,

Good morning form Grenada,

I would like to install a second autopilot on my Super Maramu (1995).

Does any one know the Raymarine hydraulic Linear Drive 24v M81201 (New E12208)

Any information and pictures will be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Hydraulique Linear Drive

Most hydraulic drives will be more compact at the rudder head and offer much more installation flexibility than the linear drive because the motor and pump can be mounted separately from the ram.

It's not a simple or easy choice choice between linear drive and hydraulic.

The Raymarine linear drive is a very well engineered machine.  It has a long history of reliable operation.  It is quiet (Very!) and works well on the Amels it is used on.

Hydraulic units have many fewer moving parts, are much simpler mechanically, are robust, powerful, and long lasting. If you select one carefully, most of the parts will be standard hydraulic system parts available all over the world.  Rams, seals, hoses, etc are common to all kinds of machines and can be sourced anywhere there is any kind of industrial economy.

But be aware:  The pumps used in many of the hydraulic autopilot systems can be quiet noisy.  Mounting them under the berth would definitely not be a good place if you ever wanted to sleep there underway.  They can be mounted remotely with longer hoses, but that increases the cost and hassle of the install.

With a linear drive, if you are cruising in remote areas and want a back up, pretty much the only thing to do is have a complete spare ready to go.  With a hydraulic unit, having a spare pump and ram seals would fix 99% of anything that would ever go wrong.

If I was installing a new AP drive on my boat from scratch...  I am not sure what I would do.  I have installed and worked with both systems and it's a tough choice.  But it is tough because both function well, and are reliable. It might come down to which one was easier to install in that application.

If my chain drive unit was to fail, I'd might replace it with a hydraulic unit. My linear drive I'd replace in kind.

I did use the standard backing plates.  But you couldn't go wrong using bigger ones of aluminum or G-10 cut to fit the space available below deck.

When Atlantic Towers talks about "pre-loading" they are talking about putting stress into the system to stabilize it.  The way this is done is set up the legs of the arch so they are significantly further apart than the mounting points.  The width of the arch is adjustable by design, so this isn't hard.  I used a Spanish windlass to pull the legs together to get them to fit.  This "loads" the arch so it is under tension and it doesn't have as much freedom to move.

My recollection is that I pulled them together about 6 inches, but talk to them to get the right distance--don't count on my memory! More is better... up to a critical point of course! I don't think they emphasize the importance of this part of the process enough in their instructions.

We mounted ours with the aft arch feet just clear of the back of the stern cleats. That way the arch clears the mizzen boom, we didn't have to fuss with reinforcements to the transom, and access to the underside of both feet for bolting is inside the lazarette.

Holes in the deck were drilled oversize through the top skin, core removed, and then filled with thickened epoxy before drilling to final size for the bolts.

Hello all,

Thank you for your email and inputs.

We are looking to the possibilities for the Super Maramu 1995 that is different than the SM 2000.

Pat from Shenanigans did a super job on it, and  you can check the pictures on the group.
I cannot see another way to install the M81134 Type 2 Long Linear Drive 24 Volt on our SM.

I dont have enough information for the Lecombe & Schmidt hydraulic  self priming drive from Jean Pierre and the space that this system will take and location where it was installed.

A Raymarine specialist told us that the Raymarine Hydraulic Linear 24v E12208 Type 2 will be easy to fit in the SM 1995.

We will continue with our investigation :) and let you know.

Hello Gulls and Guys,

I installed a Lecombe & Schmidt hydraulic self priming drive ( better quality than the Ray equiv unit) coupled to a Raymarine AC 400 system.  It was not very successful at first because of the poor engineering, quality control and installation done in TK.

However, the results after 2 engineering changes and many thousand miles have proven it reliable and in my opinion more supple and subtle, hence easier on the boat than a comparable electric drive which steers the boat by “0” and “1” rather than a smooth change; in fact, the electric unit is only used occasionally to verify its’ serviceability.  However, the installation of a hydraulic drive in an early SM enforces a regime of “remove the rudder bellcrank” to verify and tighten the rudder shaft nylon nut because one cannot get the tool under the modified bellcrank to tighten it while at sea.  (Lose all steering if done… think of putting the boat in “irons” before removing the bellcrank.  Hence the “regime" described earlier….

Unfortunately, I am now in Europe visiting friends and never took photos of the installation…

If you are interested in photos and parts list, I will be back on the boat on 15 Sep…

Kind regards,

Jean-Pierre Germain,

Maria (Pitu),

How are you and how is Willi?

If I were you, I wouldn't add hydraulic as a second drive unit. Rather I would add Raymarine M81134 Type 2 Long Linear Drive 24 Volt. This is the drive unit that Amel installed in SMs. The reason I would add it rather than hydraulic, is that adding hydraulic adds 1 more complexity to the autopilot system.

Who ever installs this needs to know that the internal clutch is 12VDC, even though the motor is 24VDC. Also, the motor wires on the linear drive installation have to be reversed polarity to the primary chain drive, and you will need an A/B switch to switch between both drives.

Let me know if you need more installation information.

I had a "spare" motor that was also a little smaller but managed to adapt it as well.
While in Fethiye, the folks at V-Marine repaired my outhaul motor and found another "spare" in Istanbul. I did ask, and they said they could supply more. I will ask again if that's still true.
