Re: Replacing AMFA Fresh Water System by Jabsco

Hi,

I can add another piece of information to this thread.

I replaced the AMFA by a Whale pump Ref : FW1225 Whale Watermaster 3.0 GPM, 24 V d.c which was really easy to install including the connection of the wiring of the functioning green light.
It's  really smaller (save room around) cheaper (I have one in spare) and does perfectly the job of giving fresh water immediately where it's requested ;-)

Just a small work to do is to prepare the pipes connection in order to connect with the in and out part of the boat.

We used the dish washer not to often. It was a help when we had friends on board and a lot of dish to clean. We are always surprised how fast the dish washer cleans the dish.

The washing machine on board is perfect. It makes it so much easier. We had never problems using it.

Hi there

My lofrans tigres seems to be odd

The rope drum is mounted on the same side as the chain gypsy
- which it shouldn't be

The manual /emergency handle fitting is no where to be seen
and there are some odd packing pieces instead I presume !

Thought I'd share the anomaly and wondered if anyone had
any ideas

Order the missing parts vs start again!?

Spinnaker pole fitting maramu

Hello
Our 'new to us' old maramu has a broken fitting that I'm unsure how to replace
It's the cast fitting that fits on the end of the short pole. I've attached a photo I hope of the one that is not broken.

It's build by Barbarossa originally

Does anyone have any ideas where I might find a replacement?

Many thanks

Hi Dennis
Yes I might do the same with the small inline tanks. The watermaker is supposed to test before it pushes out the drinking water but I'm not sure I'd trust it !!
Out of interest where did you install yours and what did you do for a saltwater throughhull? Tee off the Engine seacock?
My engine seacock already also serves the aft heads. Not sure if that was normal. Feels unlikely

All the very best and thanks again

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dinghy type and storage

I've been pondering this exact same question.
I'm thinking of building a nesting dink that sails rows and takes a small outboard
I have young kids so sailing dinghy is a major must have item
I was assuming I could nest it and tie does under the mizzen boom but I've not been at see yet with the boat beyond day hops and we will be crossing oceans so it'd be great to hear others thoughts on this

Hi Alex
Thanks for taking the time to respond
I hope we find the same clean water tanks!
It's mainly a musty taste so fingers crossed it's nothing sinister lurking requiring relining

I really like the coffee filter idea. great thinking! We have a canister at home in the domestic system. I'll look and see what's cheapest!

We use the dishwasher as a drying rack and then once in a while actually run it to keep it clean.
We use the clothes washer all the time...ours is a Siemens and it does a better job than any marina laundry I've ever used.

Hi Joel
Many thanks for taking the time to respond with that great info 👍. Really helpful. Thank you
I'll move the table and see what I can find.
Sounds like some folks gelcoat lining on the tanks has become damaged. Hopefully mines ok. If not I can't imaging access for repair is an easy job!
Talking of unpleasant jobs I've been wondering about tackling the bonding cable to keel bolt in the deep bilge but I can't even see the nut !

Thanks again and fair winds

Hello Miles. Are you aware that you can remove the large slotted screws at the base of the saloon table where it meets the  sole and then lift the table ( it is heavy ) to find the access ports into the several baffle sections of your fresh water tanks? When you clean out the organic matter I am sure you will find, DO NOT USE BLEACH. White vinegar is a good alternative  If you intend to drink the water from the tank, there are several high quality filters that get rid of most any nasty stuff that may find its way back inside such as a Seagull from www..generalecology.com. Other systems work too but I am very familiar with the Seagull as it was optional from Amel at original construction and often ordered by my customers. You should access and clean the interior of your tanks yearly.

James, your boat almost certainly does have an anti-osmotic epoxy/platelet barrier coating system. It is installed INSIDE the gel coat. In other words, after the gel coat is applied to the mold, the anti-osmosis system goes in after. This is a proprietary system from Amel. The logic was if installed behind the gel coat, it is less likely to be inadvertently removed by overly aggressive bottom preparation/sanding by a boatyard worker paying more attention to the pretty girl with a nice figure walking by than his power sanding technique. That is exactly how it was explained to me by Amel guys at the shipyard!! Perspective. Ah, just one more reason I love the French.

Maybe Olivier will let us know precisely when this osmosis treatment was implemented. I think it was late 1985 or early 1986.

Have fun with your Anel. Joel

Miles,

When I bought my 1987 Maramu, the water had been sitting in the tank about 1/3 full for 4 years.  I did not drink it as it smelled a bit “swampy”.  Upon opening the tanks, I found snails and a considerable growth of black mildew, mainly on the upper portion and undersides of the tank.  After a thorough scrubbing and removal of the organics plus flushing the water tank a few times, the water no longer has any smell or taste  The interior coating which appears to be gelcoat on my boat is  is cracked in a few places and  so the water is getting to the laminate in places.  There were also a lot of gelcoat chips in the bottom of the tank which were getting into the plumbing and plugging the faucets.  The interior of my tank showed no blistering at all but the exterior of the hull which has never been barrier coated also shows no blisters (and no voids when tested with Ultrasonics)  so this may be a function of the resin used.  When my boat is laid up, I completely drain the tank, open the very fwd and aft access port and run a fan for a couple of days to remove the rest of the moisture.  (I was told by Michel Charpentier that this was the best way to leave the tank if the boat will be in storage for a while and it makes sense to me as well) This should reduce the future mildew growth.   While the tank water now tastes fine, I have been using bottled water for drinking where possible for personal consumption unless I am out of the bottled water.   My long term plan so currently is to recoat the interior of the tank with a safe coating and to then install a low pressure RO unit such as is used in homes (driven by the city water pressure) for the drinking water source.

The 1000L water capacity is a great feature of the boat IMO.

Hi there

On previous boats I've had stainless water tanks

My 1985 maramu has the tanks built into the hull. I guess all the Amels of that era did

The water has a pretty unpleasant tang to it so I'll do some tank cleaning

But I'm due to fit a watermaker soon and wondering if I should fit a small additional tank isolated just for drinking Something that is easy to clean etc

I wonder if the tart is due to the water tanks being integral to hull.
I'd be interested to hear if others with a similar original setup have issues with unpleasant taste of water.

Many thanks

Re: Fresh water tanks

Alejandro Paquin

Hello Miles,
Our Maramu is hull #94, built in 1981. Three years ago, we removed the center table, and decided to open all the water compartments to inspect them. To our surprise, the tanks were rather clean, since it was the first time in 30 odd years it had ever been done. I guess it is a function of the source of the water you fill the tank with. We used a hydrojet to clean the light coat of slime, and scrubbed down with brushes.
We don´t have a watermaker. The previous owner would treat the tanks with a little household bleach (Clorox), 1/2 cup for the whole tank. We don´t do that generally.
For drinking we use a high capacity Everpure OCS2, which is a commercial coffee machine filter which does an excellent job of producing a tastefree, pure water.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dish washer/washer dryer

Jay,

We used our dishwasher every night until the heating element shorted. I have another but haven’t had a chance to install yet. When on the hook, we charge batteries and run AC before going to bed. This is when we run the dishwasher.

The washing machine we use about 2 times per week. We do not use the dryer function. It takes too much electricity. We air dry the clothes. This works just as fast as the dry cycle on the washer/dryer. Give the clothes a good long spin at high rpm.

Laundry ashore is expensive!!!! We’ve seen washers and dryers at $5 per load.

With best regards,

Mark

Chose a Siemens IQ 500 made for the Turkey market which incorporates a wider acceptable voltage range… funny voltage in Turkey.
