Wet / vacuum for bilge cleaning

Alex Ramseyer <alexramseyer@...>

Dear Amelians,
Bill recommended to use a wet/vacuum to use to get rid of the stuff in the bilge when cleaning. Do you have a recommondation in regards to makes / models that are good to use and don't take to much space? I have 12, 24V and 220V, no 110V on board.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Spade Anchor

Alex Ramseyer <alexramseyer@...>

Hi all,
I need to replace my Spade 55kg (ex Jerome's boat) as it is so rusty that it seems to fall apart, and the angular part has bent.
Rocna also seems to be very popular, especially here in the Carebbean. So if you use a Rocna, can you share experience and indicate how heavy your anchor is?
Also, Kobra, a relatively new product from Austria did very well in tests. Any experience out there already?

Hi Paul,
I am using a 55kg Spade as the primary anchor for years. Back in 2010, i met Jerome, a fellow Amel owner, who jumped into my boat and said: look i have to pass on some information to you. I learned from him many things that was overlooked at the delivery week. The first thing he said was: get rid of the Wasi and get a 55kg Spade. The windlass is strong enough.
Since than, i have used the Spade in all sorts of anchorages around the world, without a worry.

Has anyone fitted a spade anchor on an SM?

We are thinking of buying a Spade Aluminum Anchor as a spare. The 140 model looks as the one to choose if one go for Al. The 160 model is only made in Galvanized steel.

The benefit with Al is of course weight, more easy to manhandle and to deploy from the dingy in the event that it should be necessary.

An other benefit with the Spade as a spare is that you can dismantle the plow from the shank which Make it much easier to stow, and of course it has very good reputation as a modern efficient Anchor almost in class with our current Roccna.

But is has to fit on the bow roller also.

Hi Alex,
Sounds like you have found your problem - corroded connections. Rather than spray, you'll want to disconnect all wires, clean them up mechanically (sanding, wire brushing etc.) and reattach.  Can't help with the location of the strap, but it sounds like you may not need parts after all.
Good luck with it,

The contacts to the starter solenoid (I guess it is..) as well as the solenoid down at the bottom of the back of the gen are corroded. But only for one time and then it went back to trying to start (initiating starting mechanism for ca. half a second. So I think I have to get rid of that corrosion to get the problem solved. Any best practices from your side are appreciated.

Another disturbing factor was to see one grounding strap tied to the bonding system, but a second one hanging around with no attachment at all (see picture). Can someone tell me where that needs to be attached to?

Thanks, Alex

Alex,

I too discovered that "whole new world" on the back of the generator a few weeks ago! And I too, had completely corroded ground straps that I have just replaced. I will take some pics and will post them in this thread. I had three (3) ground straps:

1. From the main ground connection on the generator (located on the aft, outboard side of the generator right below the large +12v and -12v battery cable connections) to the engine block using an M10 x 20mm bolt. The -12v cable from the switched "out" side of the negative starter solenoid is also connected to this point on the engine as well as the two (2) other ground straps listed below.

2. From that same engine block point to the M6 threaded stud on the generator mounting pan below the generator.

3. From that same engine block point to the M8 bolt on the outboard side of the Heat Exchanger.

I will take and send pics in a bit.

I’ve bought R-5’s at West Marine.  But you do need drill them out a bit for larger SM anode bolt.

you  get a new design of your SM
great. Ask Amel how they did the design. The main engine has nothing to do with the the geni
the geni needs not more amp,
the problem is ?
but dont comment problem solving ideas, saying it is not my part number and saying i dont understand anything. I want to keep this forum with tecnical input; serious !!

Interesting as, just looking at the size of the starters, I would “guess” the engine would require more amp than the generator to start…
If the engine starts, could it be poor/degraded electrical connection to the generator?
Would be interesting to measure voltage, etc.

Yes it's possible for the starting battery to
start the engine but not the generator. When I bought our
SM the starting battery was almost dead. The engine would
start fine but the generator would not start at all. We had
to start the engine first in order the start the generator
until we changed out the battery.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Main furler motor issue

Duane Siegfri

Garulfo,

I haven't removed the top seal in your type of furler, but if you review the posts/photos on removing the oil seals for the C-Drive there is one that recommends the following procedure.  Run two screws into the oil seal across from each other, then attach a slide hammer to each screw and back it out a bit at a time from each screw.  The downside to this is that you're truly committed once you run the screws into the seal.  Use the largest screw that will fit to avoid a pullout as you slide-hammer it.  You might try using a penetrating oil the night before to lubricate the surfaces of the the oil seal.

This worked for me on the C-drive oil seals.

The reason is that in the SM2k, the 12VDC cable to the generator is twice as long as the engine. You know the math. Yada, yada.

Is the generator starting system more sensitive to low voltage for some reason?
