In Mast Electric Furler question

Arlo

Hello all, looking for the collective wisdom from this group. I have a 1985 Mango. I suspect that this question might apply to all of the electric furlers despite their design differences over the years.

Below are the symptoms

  • The mainsail unfurls with the electric motor without issue and is fast and reliable.
  • The mainsail will not furl in (counter clockwise around the mast) with the electric motor, the motor sounds like it is spinning
  • If I use the hand crank on the front of the motor mast, it furls in easily. So nothing is jammed, stuck or dragging inside the mast
  • If I unfurl the sail all the way out and keep going which results in the mainsail furling in the opposite direction (clockwise) around the mast it furls without problem
So my thoughts are that its is either
  • Solenoid issue
  • Electrical connect issue (corrosion) on that side of the motor
  • Maybe a worn gear on the motor that impacts that one direction only
Has anyone had this problem?

BTW the boat sails awesome!

Thanks
Arlo

Pacific Cool is currently in Guadeloupe and as I was picking up a mooring in Les Saints, a big cloud of black smoke gushed out of my exhaust.  I also noticed black particles floating on the water.  It lasted about 10-20 seconds and then everything seemed to return to normal.  I.E., water temp seemed normal and the oil pressure was a bit low but increased to 1.5 Bar when I increased the RPM.  I let it run for a few minutes and got into the engine room to loom and listen.  All seemed normal.  I need to get off the mooring tomorrow.

Does anyone know what might have happened?  I have a Volvo Penta 22 TMD which till this has run perfectly.  After being on the hard in Trinidad for 6 months ending on 05 Jan 2018 it started immediately.  I plan t have a mechanic check it when I get to Pointe-a-Pitre.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow Thruster Motor Bearing SM

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good afternoon Soraya & Thomas,

Back in March 6, 2011 I saved an email sent from Gary to Gianni regarding the Bearing on the Electric Motor of the Bow Thruster.

Here is what it says:

the bearing in the base of the motor that supports the spline shaft is an NSK 6204VV bearing. Evidently the 6204 bearing size is very common and the VV means that the bearing is sealed with a rubber seal on each side. The bearing is a Single Row Radial Bearing; 20 mm ID x 47 mm OD x 14 mm Wide; Double Sealed, Non-Contact; C3 Clearance.

Extraction of the bearing and replacement is another issue. When you have accomplished the task please write it up and post it in the Files Section of the forum for the rest of us. Also, you could upload your photos to the Bow Thruster Service File in the Photos Section. I think they would useful to encourage everyone to annually service this area and take care of corrosion control.

So I am afraid no one has done this procedure, unless Gary or Bill did it.

Sincerely, Alexandre

PS: really enjoy the tour of your 54 !!!

Hello,

Has anyone dismounted/replaced the bearings on the electric
motor rotor of the Bow Thruster on SM? In particular, the
bottom bearing.

see pictures. The bottom bearing is partially removed, but
the remaining part seems stuck.

Asking on behalf of a friend on Super Maramu.

Thanks for your input

Thanks Alan - just the thing.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow Thruster Motor Bearing SM

Mark & Debbie Mueller

A couple of thoughts - always protect the motor windings from heat and arc flash.

1) Use a bearing separator kit, it is a diamond shaped beveled puller.  This clamps on the small space between the inner race and the motor windings and uses a puller to remove the inner race from the shaft.

2) Take the assembly to a weld shop and weld to small beads on opposite sides of the inner race.  This will cause the race to expand then you can grab it with a pair of pliers and pull it off.

3) Carefully hacksaw a slight diagonal cut on the inner race so as not to damage the shaft, spread the inner race with a screwdriver and slide it off.

Good luck!

Thanks so much to everyone, Joel, David, Chuck, Porter - all great data and I’m sure I will find the part.

David ( Perigee) - so sorry to miss you - we met up with Alexandre ( Ex- Nikimat) yesterday and he entertained us royally with his Napoleon Champagne 🍾 opening trick. Such a brave and generous guy - we wish him the best in his epic struggle with his insurer.
So very sad to see Nikimat still floating forlornly in the Bay.

Bill, many thanks too - the Italy contact could be closer for us - I will send you a photo to see if you can identify the part. It is the door catch handle and mechanism.

Joel, yes sure you will get Carango in the end but I feel there are a few years in this old dog yet.

Thank you everyone.

Peter,

I am not a big fan of Coastal Climate Control due to a bad experience I had with them. I have since purchases Frigoboat parts from Go2Marine. I have found them less expensive (especially on shipping) and they ship worldwide: https://www.go2marine.com

Good luck with your repair.

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] HULL GELCOAT REFURBISHING PROJECT - OLDER MARAMU

Hello to all,

I just wanted to share in a few words what we are doing on the boat, for those who asked . The boat has been on the hard since January 22nd 2018, in NAVIMCA Shipyard, in the city of Cumaná, Venezuela, state of Sucre. (by the way it  is the oldest continuously-inhabited, European-established settlement in the continent).

In 2012-2013 Simpatico got new gelcoat on the deck, dodge, (removed), cockpit, deck storage spaces, and heads (fiberglass areas). At this time we also repowered with a Yanmar 4JH4-HTE engine (only engine available at the time in Venezuela) and refurbished engine room, the vinyl floors, upholstery, mattresses, refrigerator, nav instruments and electronics. Simpatico has no fuel generator and relies on 400W solar and 400W wind generators, with a 430 Ah battery bank.

I posted some pictures of the yard and the progress of the work, carried out by a friend of ours, which we estimate will last about 120 days. The yard just provides the space and the basic services.

We will be applying about 60 Kg of fresh gelcoat  by INTEQUIM), a primer and antifouling by Montana, all manufactured in Venezuela.

So basically the old gelcoat has been sanded down, all old layers of antifouling removed. So the fiberglass is being repaired where needed, especially the keel, the sides and the aft area which had a lot of damage, after 37 years in the water. So the gelcoat will be sprayed on, and sanded numerous times until we get a good smooth durable coat.

The costs of this job in local currency is very competitive (the yard will be about US$400 including use of the Travelift). It is 5 hours driving from home, but worth the trouble. The weather is good (28ºC) no rain, a little too windy for spraying, we hope it dies down a  bit in the coming days.

Ryan,

OR equally possible... ours were redone using lines with the same Amel color schemes by somebody who didn't know how to (or care to?) splice...

In any event, well seized or well spliced--all work.  Small eye splices on each end of the ballooner would be a good way to go.
