Hi Paul We took our mast down last winter, the protection layer under the masts are not made of rubber, it is some kind of super hard nylon.

On the outside of the mast might be OK. My original pad was completely dissolved from age. I think the mast settled down that amount, and caused the rig to be loose.

Now after those years and a cruise around the world the 2 masts still look very good. I did not change at the time the pad since there where no crack or visible damage.

As both the deck under the mast and the underside of the mast have quite hard surfaces, the pad is just there to take the edge off the impact, much like the silent blocks in the suspension

Hi, I plan to remove the masts on Sea Hobo, Sharki 96 over the next 3 months at Cardiff Marina Village. I can see no signs of a pad under either mast, is there one on a Sharki?

3M makes a product, Scotch 2200 mastic pads that is excellent for that situation. I literally removed my two antennae from my SM two days ago when I took the masts down.

Hi Ruedi, Strange answer you have got from Amel as the crew in Martinique has even build a special rig to replace the pad with a standing mast.
